Abstract: The purpose of this dissertation is to think over the construction process of narrative focus in Author, Author (2004), by David Lodge, a biographical novel about the writer Henry James (1843-1916). The narrator does not limit himself to guiding the reader through the narrative; rather, his attitude towards factual aspects of the life and literary course of the North-American novelist seems to play a fundamental role in the novel. In the fictional construction of the débâcle of "Guy Domville", in London, 1895 for instance it is possible to distinguish the narrator's bipartition, in order to tell and show two different episodes which happen in two different places, simultaneously. In other moments, the authorial voice blends with that of the subject of the enunciation to such a degree that the less attentive reader may not be capable of organizing the discourse, in a first moment. James' gradual movement away from prose fiction so as to find his playwright identity; the lack of success as a playwright; his subsequent slow psychological recovery; the return to prose fiction; and, finally, the weak result of writing and revising prefaces to his literary works in order to put together The Novels and Tales of Henry James: The New York Edition (1905), are some of the most conspicuous events in James' trajectory discussed in Author, Author

    Pigs' needs and wants

    No full text
Animal welfare is inherently related to animals’ needs and wants. Needs relate to biological requirements, while wants relate to animals’ desires, which may go beyond what is required to maintain health. The Five Freedoms, which underpin much of the guidance and legal frameworks regarding protection of farm animal welfare, are closely related to animals’ needs. Yet despite their acceptance as the basis for minimal welfare standards, it can be argued that many of the freedoms, and thus animals’ needs, are not actually met for pigs kept under commercially intensive conditions. This is particularly the case regarding the ‘Freedom to express normal behaviour’. In many cases, normal behaviour is not merely a desire but innate and needs to be performed in order to remain physically or psychologically healthy or to produce healthy offspring. This chapter aims to reflect on pigs’ needs and wants and how these are met in current pig husbandry systems. We also propose a matrix of needs and wants as guidance for moving towards better standards

The acute coronary syndromes (ACS) cover a spectrum of diseases, which include the silent ischemia, unstable angina and acute myocardial infarction (AMI) with or without ST-segment elevation. Coronary artery disease is the leading cause of death worldwide and its prevalence has been increasing progressively as a result of the increase in life expectancy and the survival of acute cases. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the approach performed by the SUS in elderly with acute coronary syndrome in a general hospital. METHODS: A cross-sectional study with a sample consisting of 31 elderly patients older than 60 years who were presented with clinical symptoms compatible with acute coronary artery disease with or without ST-segment elevation in 12-lead electrocardiogram with up to 07 days of evolution in the Deputado Janduhy Carneiro hospital in Patos-PB. The analysis was descriptive in all the variables of the study. RESULTS: From the sampled patients, 22 (71%) were female, the predominant age range was from 71 to 80 years in 16 (51,6%) of the cases. The most prevalent risk factors found were hypertension, 27 cases (87.1 %), family history of coronary artery disease, 18 cases (58.1 %) and diabetes mellitus, 08 cases (25.8 %). There was an association with high mortality for patients classified in Killip class III and high risk in TIMI Risk score. Only nine (36 %) patients with myocardial infarction with ST segment elevation did therapy recanalization with fibrinolytic therapy. Medications such as beta-blockers and heparin were used less in the admission and medications such as aspirin, betablockers, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and statins are no longer prescribed frequently in hospital discharge. There was a high mortality of elderly patients (35.5% of cases) found in the study. CONCLUSION: The problems detected in the elderly with SCA collide in the precariousness of the health model and does not follow the current guidelines. It is evident, therefore, the need for new standards of care in health care with implementation of public policies since the emphasis on prevention of cardiovascular risk factors, in the training of health professionals to the use of therapies that have proven effective for reducing this high mortality

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Piglet mortality and morbidity: Inevitable or unacceptable?

Piglet mortality is a problem with complex aetiology, predisposed by the natural biology of a polytocous species which produces multiple offspring allocated disproportionate resources both in the pre- and post-natal environment. Intensive sibling rivalry to acquire limited uterine resources prenatally, and then limited nutrients postnatally, leads to a high risk of mortality for the weakest among the offspring. In the domestic pig these risks have been exacerbated by intensive selection for economic traits such as prolificacy and leanness. Therefore a certain amount of mortality would seem expected. The acceptability of death can be a subject of much ethical debate. However, even if death itself is not considered a welfare issue, the manner of dying is, particularly when it involves pain and/or suffering. Thus, whilst the life history strategy of the pig encompasses mortality risk, at what point does the inevitable become unacceptable for animal welfare

Short-time critical dynamics of the Baxter-Wu model

    No full text
We study the early time behavior of the Baxter-Wu model, an Ising model with three-spin interactions on a triangular lattice. Our estimates for the dynamic exponent z are compatible with results recently obtained for two models which belong to the same universality class of the Baxter-Wu model: the two-dimensional four-state Potts model and the Ising model with three-spin interactions in one direction. However, our estimates for the dynamic exponent theta of the Baxter-Wu model are completely different from the values obtained for those models. This discrepancy could be related to the absence of a marginal operator in the Baxter-Wu model

Extensions and automorphisms of Rota-Baxter groups

The notion of Rota-Baxter groups was recently introduced by Guo, Lang and Sheng [{\em Adv. Math.} 387 (2021), 107834, 34 pp.] in the geometric study of Rota-Baxter Lie algebras. They are closely related to skew braces as observed by Bardakov and Gubarev. In this paper, we study extensions of Rota-Baxter groups by constructing suitable cohomology theories. Among others, we find relations with the extensions of skew braces. Given an extension of Rota-Baxter groups, we also construct a short exact sequence connecting various automorphism groups, which generalizes the Wells short exact sequence. This is a preliminary version of this research. we will soon upload a final version free from typos and error

Nurse sow strategies in the domestic pig: I. Consequences for selected measures of sow welfare

Management strategies are needed to optimise the number of piglets weaned from hyper-prolific sows. Nurse sow strategies involve transferring supernumerary new-born piglets onto a sow whose own piglets are either weaned or fostered onto another sow. Such ‘nurse sows’ have extended lactations spent in farrowing crates, which could have negative implications for their welfare. This study used 47 sows, 20 of which farrowed large litters and had their biggest piglets fostered onto nurse sows which were either 1 week (2STEP7, n=9) or 3 weeks into lactation (1STEP21, n=10). Sows from which piglets were removed (R) were either left with the remainder of the litter intact (I) (remain intact (RI) sows, n=10), or had their litters equalised (E) for birth weight using piglets of the same age from non-experimental sows (remain equalised (RE) sows, n=9). Piglets from 2STEP7 were fostered onto another nurse sow which was 3 weeks into lactation (2STEP21, n=9). Back-fat thickness was measured at entry to the farrowing house, at fostering (nurse sows only) and weaning. Sows were scored for ease of locomotion and skin and claw lesions at entry to the farrowing house and weaning. Salivary cortisol samples were collected and tear staining was scored at 0900 h weekly from entry until weaning. Saliva samples were also taken at fostering. Data were analysed using GLMs with appropriate random and repeated factors, or non-parametric tests were applied where appropriate. Back-fat thickness decreased between entry and weaning for all sows (F 1,42=26.59, P<0.001) and tended to differ between treatments (F 4,16=2.91; P=0.06). At weaning RI sows had lower limb lesion scores than 2STEP7 and RE sows (χ 2 4=10.8, P<0.05). No treatment effects were detected on salivary cortisol concentrations (P>0.05) and all nurse sows had a higher salivary cortisol concentration at fostering, compared with the other days (F 10,426=3.47; P<0.05). Acute effects of fostering differed between nurse sow treatments (F 2,113=3.45, P<0.05); 2STEP7 sows had a higher salivary cortisol concentration than 1STEP21 and 2STEP21 sows on the day of fostering. 2STEP7 sows had a higher salivary cortisol concentration at fostering, compared with 1STEP21 and 2STEP21 sows. Tear staining scores were not influenced by treatment (P>0.05). In conclusion, no difference was detected between nurse sows and non-nurse sows in body condition or severity of lesions. Although some nurse sows experienced stress at fostering, no long-term effect of the nurse sow strategies was detected on stress levels compared with sows that raised their own litter
