Abstract: This study investigates how Jorge Luis Borges builds Sur neighborhood as mythic space in his first three books of poetry. To this end, we analyzed how the representation of such a space make of it a symbolic and later a mythical space, both in the overall work of the author, but also that individual movement of Borges that achieve the collective imagination of the city. Still we have studied how the personal memory and the imagery is able to create emotional spaces, which constitute the totality of texts by the author

De Pablo-Moreno, Andrea Miguel-Batuecas, Leopoldo González-Brusi, Pablo Bermejo-Álvarez, Luis Revuelta, Antonio LirasFactor V deficiency is a congenital coagulation disorder characterized by the absence or malfunction of factor V (FV). The purpose of this study was to develop a viable FV-deficient mouse model using CRISPR/Cas9 technology. A viable pathological model of the disease was not available to develop new therapies. A previous in silico study was performed to select a mutation causing a mild disease phenotype in humans (Thr1898Met missense). Such mutation was replicated in mice by CRISPR-mediated homology directed repair. Following crossing, homozygous individuals were subjected to coagulometry assays, including FV levels, prothrombin time (PT), and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT). The in silico study suggested that the mutation destabilizes FV structure of both mouse and human variants, putatively producing a mild phenotype of the disease in mice. Mendelian inheritance was observed in the offspring. No spontaneous signs of blood clotting disturbances, premature deaths or gestational dysfunctions were observed. FV levels in homozygous animals were 24.5% ± 5.1; 39.7 sec ± 2.8; PT was 61.8% ± 6.3; 23.4 sec ± 1.6 (INR = 1.47 ± 0.12); and aPTT was 46.9 sec ± 3.2. A viable FV-deficient mouse model was generated by introducing a missense mutation in FV. The model exhibits a mild phenotype of the disease, akin to that observed in humans.Comunidad de MadridUniversidad Complutense de Madrid- Banco SantanderMinisterio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades ( España)Depto. de FisiologíaDepto. de Producción AnimalDepto. de Genética, Fisiología y MicrobiologíaFac. de VeterinariaFac. de Ciencias BiológicasTRUEpu

Luis v. United States: Asset Forfeiture Butts Heads with the Sixth Amendment

    No full text
In recent years, the federal government has vastly increased its use of asset forfeiture, the seizure of property connected to illegal activities. As authorized under federal law, the government is also able to restrain assets prior to trial when the government belives those assets will ultimately be found to be forfeitable. This pretrial restraint potentially implicates the constitutionally guaranteed right to counsel for criminal defendants. In the upcoming Supreme Court case of Luis v. United States, the Court will address the question of whether a pretrial restraint of assets which are not traceable to any illegal activity is permissible when those assets are needed to hire defense counsel. In this Commentary, the Author argues that the right to counsel of one’s own choosing is not unlimited and that pretrial restraint is necessary to prevent criminals from profiting from their crimes

Does public capital crowd out private capital? : evidence from India

    No full text
A recent but rapidly growing empirical literature focuses on the relationship between public and private capital. But for the most part, it ignores the heterogeneity of public investment. In many countries, especially in the developing world, public investment includes not only basic infrastructure projects, but also commercial and industrial projects similar to those undertaken by the private sector. And those two types of public investment are likely to have quite different effects on the accumulation of private capital. Using data from India, the author examines this issue empirically by implementing a simple analytical model encompassing two types of public capital. The empirical results show that in the long run capital for public infrastructure projects crowds in private capital - other types of public capital have the opposite effect. But in the short run, both kinds of public investment may crowd out private investment.Decentralization,Economic Theory&Research,International Terrorism&Counterterrorism,Banks&Banking Reform,Capital Markets and Capital Flows,Inequality,Economic Stabilization,Economic Theory&Research,Environmental Economics&Policies,Banks&Banking Reform

Sectoral allocation by gender of Latin American workers over the liberalization period of the 1990s

    No full text
The recent restructuring of Latin American economies has renewed interest in the effects of trade liberalization, on labor markets, and on the gender division of labor. The author does not attempt to establish casuality between economic reforms, and the types of jobs that men and women hold. Instead, she provides a detailed description of the trends in male, and female formal, and informal sector participation during the economic reform period in Argentina, Brazil, and Costa Rica. The author first compares the gender composition of the formal, informal wage, and self-employment sectors in a year before reforms (1988 for Argentina, 1989 for Brazil, and Costa Rica), and a year after reforms implementation (1997 for Argentina, 1995 for Brazil and Costa Rica). Although women continued to be more likely than men to work in the informal wage sector, there is no trend of"masculinization"or"feminization"of the informal sector, or any other. Instead, in Argentina men have overtaken women as the most prevalent workers in the informal wage sector, while in Brazil, the opposite has occurred (as men move into self-employment). In Costa Rica there have been no statistical, observable changes. The author then considers the distribution across sectors within each gender group, to identify whether men, and women are more likely to select different sectors in the post-reform period relative to the pre-reform period. Among both men, and women in all three countries (except Brazilian men), workers have become more likely to hold informal wage jobs, and less likely to hold formal sector jobs. Trends in human capital accumulation explain these changes for both men, and women, while changes in gender roles, primarily in homecare and marriage, do not seem to have an effect.Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Labor Policies,Population&Development,Public Health Promotion,Environmental Economics&Policies,Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Environmental Economics&Policies,Population&Development,Banks&Banking Reform,Work&Working Conditions

Luis Buñuel a Španělsko ve třicátých letech

    No full text
The bachelor thesis focuses on the phase of the 1930s in Spain. On grounds of movie production of Spanish director Luis Buñuel, it tries to zoom in and clarify the problems and political-economic situation in that era. Author devotes himself to three chosen spheres (anticlericalism, education, army) whose evolution from 19th century until the Second republic is investigated through the specialized literature, contemporary articles and movies. Emphasis is laid on the existence of chosen aspects in political-social level of that era, their presence and critique in selected works, whereby the thesis tries to offer an analysis of certain problems, which are closely associated with the spheres primarily examined in the bachelor thesis. Attention is also focused on the personality of Luis Buñuel, his political orientation and cultural terms of Spain in the 1930s.Institute of General HistoryÚstav světových dějinFilozofická fakultaFaculty of Art
