No Europe without Brussels: The Berlaymont Building and the Development of the Léopold Area
Europe and Brussels had a mutual dependency from the founding of the European Communities. This article explores the historic relation between local urban and the transnational development of post-war Europe. It ultimately raises the question to what extent there exists a dialogue between various actors involved to actively design and build the image of Europe in Brussels.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care. A mountain made of woods: the landscape in Mauro Corona's novels
In this discussion, the protagonists will be the plants, the animals and the landscapes. The novels by the writer Mauro Corona have been analysed in order to create an overview of the landscapes in his works. Giving both a quantitative and a qualitative view, the places and spaces are reported in detail from a physical, flora and fauna point of view, but also showing the connotation more related to an emotional/subjective point of view.
In his novels, the author predominantly speaks to us of a mountainous, rural landscape, often showing us the details of certain spaces
CONTEXTUALISER L’ATROCITE ?
This article seeks to make a novel contribution in the context of the controversy surrounding the Museum of Memory and Human Rights (MMDH) in Chile: should the MMDH (or should it not) include in its museography the period before September 11, 1973—i.e., the context for the coup d’état? I defend the thesis that the MMDH can integrate a contextual dimension—without betraying its mission, vision, and function—as long as it responds to an approach to the notion of a context-without-causality. In my opinion, the main problem with criticism from the political right—which accuses the museum of not fulfilling its educational mission because it decontextualizes the coup d’état—is that it responds to a causal vision of the notion of context, which leads it to insurmountable contradictions. If, thanks to a well-thought-out museography, the concept of noncausal contextualization were successfully implemented, this would not create a contradiction within the museum, but could even favour it. The conviction that the coup d’état and its atrocities have no causes or antecedents, and cannot have them, reinforces the educational mission of the MMDH
Sacralidad, cohesión social y desencantamiento. Conversación con Hans Joas
In light of an analytical review of the different stages of Hans Joas’ social theoretical work — whose stages range from his early studies of George Herbert Mead and American pragmatism to his most recent publication Die Macht des Heiligen (The Power of the Sacred) (2017)—, as well as the complex internal connections between them, a detailed critical evaluation is made of both the meaning of the Durkheimian notion of the value consensus and the relevance of this consensus to social cohesion in modern societies. In view of all this, urgent issues in current society are discussed —such as migration, the geopolitical order and internal and external security; all of them issues to which Joas has also devoted part of his work. To resume, such theoretical and empirical questions about social cohesion serve here as the guiding thread for an understanding of the power of Hans Joas’s social theory, in particular, his sociology of the sacred
