    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

    International students are the part and parcel of a University. Their participation for the develop-ment of a university is urgently required. Normally university provide different facilities to the stu-dents. How this facility can be improved is the main objective of this thesis. Youth plays a great role for the development of a country and a society. Now young people are more interested to give their recommendation in digital service rather than manual system. For this purpose, a soft-ware has been designed and it has been evaluated by the students as well. For the thesis, literature on “youth participation in digital environment” was reviewed. The review revealed that young people are more interested to participate in online media than the traditional media. Young people not only participate in digital media but also the policy maker or the agenda setter in digital participation. In addition, an environment has been created by the digital world where young people can enjoy autonomy to learn and shape their life. The influence of digital media in all aspect of the society is also increasing and youth’s participation can make a change of the society. Although, international students’ participation depends on background, region, type of institution but they prefer to participate in internet based system. There may be some conflicts or problems in digital participation but this can be solved by engaging the policy maker of the society. Young people can also learn civic education by participating online media which can help to grow a civilized society. Although the learning material for civic education needs to be improved and in this regard policy maker of a society can play a role. The definition of good citizen can also be changed because outside formal education people can also learn from digital media as well. However, some young people also misuse the online media and waste their time but if they are guided in a proper way then it can be solved. Social media also has an impact on young genera-tion and with the help of this they can solve different social problems. The research in this thesis try to make a connection with all the youth projects and also increase the connection in young people and their communities. Firstly, the study of related work gives an idea of youth participation in University development. Secondly, Interview was conducted to the international students. After that data has been analysed and a web service prototype has been designed. Then this prototype has been evaluated by the international students. After getting feedback from the users the research of this thesis can be considered as a successful attempt for the international students to participate in university development. The university authority will get an idea how they can improve the facility for the international students

    Redox-induced modifications of mutant p53 and MGMT proteins mediate improved anticancer drug responses in brain and colon cancers

    My research focused on exploiting the higher levels of oxidative and nitrosative stresses present in brain and colon cancers improving the anticancer drug efficacy. First, we designed a stabilized homoglutathione disulfide (hGTX) with minute amounts of cisplatin added. hGTX perturbed the cellular redox, activated redox-sensitive kinases and enhanced cytotoxicity. The p53 tumor suppressor is a redox-sensitive protein and the mutant p53 proteins found in cancers are folded incorrectly and cannot activate the target genes. Surprisingly, we found that the redoximbalance induced by hGTX could restore the DNA binding and biological functions to the R273H mutant p53 present in HT29 and SW620 colon cancer cells. Piperlongumine (PL), obtained from the pepper plant was also able to reactivate the R273H mutant form of p53, to a lower extent. Both hGTX and PL were able to sensitize the colon cancer cells in vitro and in xenografts to chemotherapy drugs. The redox-induced inhibition of 06-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT), which confers drug resistance in brain tumors, was also investigated. I exploited the anionic nature of the active-site Cys145 and its susceptibility for thiolation and nitrosylation for developing new MGMT inhibitors. hGTX and spermine NONOate (a representative NO donor) induced a potent inhibition of MGMT's DNA repair in tumor cells. These agents increased the temozolomide cytotoxicity both in vitro and in vivo. Further, we found a new avenue to extend the MGMT deficiency by curtailing the activity of Snitrosoglutathione reductase (GSNOR). Addition ofN6022, a GSNOR inhibitor, to the spermine NONOate + temozolomide combination resulted in most efficient tumor cell killing m xenografts. These findings highlight the importance of redox-driven therapeutic strategies.Restricted until January 2018
