Get PDFLa literatura cura cuando, a través de la escritura, el autor intenta cerrar la herida causada por el trauma infligido por la condición colonial o por la aparente normalidad del canon literario. A los lectores les resta detectar las claves que les permitan descubrir la lógica mediante la cual el autor desea hacer las paces con su pasado. A esa empresa están dedicadas estas breves notas de investigación. Se propone una guía de lectura para Reading in the Dark de Seamus Deane (1997), novela contextualizada en la cruenta realidad de Irlanda del Norte anterior a los Problemas (1968-1998). Se sugiere que, a fin de revertir los efectos del trauma causado por esa situación, Deane construye su propia literatura menor (Deleuze & Guattari, 1978). Ubicada en las fronteras entre la autobiografía y la ficción, la novela puede ser abordada en términos de las categorías deleuzianas desterritorialización del lenguaje, articulación de lo personal y lo político, y mecanismo narrativo colectivo. Leídas al unísono, dichas características, ponen en juego, con una potencia no menor a las de las literaturas post-coloniales, las condiciones revolucionarias de una literatura menor y es allí donde, al decir de Deleuze (2006), yace la verdadera salud del escritor.Palabras clave: literatura, literatura norirlandesa contemporánea, literatura menor, traumaAbstractLiterature heals when, through writing, the author tries to close the wound caused by the trauma inflicted by either the colonial condition or the apparent normalcy of the literary canon. Readers are then enticed to detect the clues and the overall logics through which the author wishes to come to terms with his past. That is the intention of these brief research notes. A reading guide to Seamus Deane’s (1997) Reading in the Dark is suggested here. The novel is set in the harsh panorama of Northern Ireland before The Problems (1968-1998), and it is proposed that, in order to overcome the effects of the trauma derived from that situation, Deane (1997) designs his own minor literature (Deleuze & Guattari, 1978). Halfway between fiction and autobiography, the novel can be analized in terms of the Deleuzian categories deterritorialization of language, collective narrative mechanism, and articulation between the personal and the political. Read in tandem, those traits put at play, with no lighter strength than those of post-colonial literatures, the revolutionary conditions of a minor literature, and it is there where, according to Deleuze (2006), lies for the author its true health. Get PDFThe Dragon Can’t Dance (1979) and The Wine of Astonishment (1982) have been read as gestures of resistance and their characters as social types moving from mere victims of cultural oppression into purportive agents of their own destiny probably due to Lovelace’s open commitment to writing the folk. However, subjects and their identities should be read in wider networks of human relationships than the ones offered by the mere oppositional dualities of modernity. This work aims at describing Lovelace’s characters as not only tied to their own identities by conscience and self-knowledge but also still subject to social institutions by control and dependence. Therefore, the description suggests that self-identity can never be totally pulled apart from social control and that there are always traps for the gaze authorising certain institutionalized subjects to see the folk the way they do.Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educació
From De-Anglicization to Internationalisation: Cultural Representations of the UKand the USA in Global, Adapted and Local ELT Textbooks in Argentina<a href=
Get PDFIt is generally acknowledged that the culture of English-speaking countries has abandoned its central role in recent ELT materials. However, this study suggests that representations of the Anglo-American culture are still favoured in ELT textbooks but that, in most cases, they have been transformed into “international” attitudes. This idea is tested by the compilation of lists of cultural references for four series of textbooks in use in Argentina, and by the application of the procedures of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to a selection of reading passages from them. The findings provide an answer as to what representations of English-speaking cultures are in current textbooks and open to debate the apparent fairness of English as an International Language (EIL).Existe un consenso casi generalizado en que la cultura de los países de habla inglesa ha abandonado su papel central en los textos de inglés como lengua extranjera. Sin embargo, se sugiere que las representaciones de la cultura Anglo-americana aun persisten sólo que transformadas en actitudes “internacionales”. Esta idea se pone a prueba mediante la compilación de listas de referencias culturales en cuatros series de libros en uso en Argentina y en el Análisis Crítico del Discurso (ACD) de una serie de textos destinados a la lectura en dichos volúmenes. Los resultados determinan qué representaciones culturales subsisten en los textos y abren al debate la aparente neutralidad del inglés como lengua internacional (EIL, por sus siglas en inglés)

Sin embargo,es factible clasificar al texto como ensayo que aborda los núcleos filosofalesde la nacionalidad, a saber, la raza, la lengua y la historia, producidopor un sujeto mestizo centrado, con un locus único, capaz de representara los demás sujetos fronterizos. La legitimidad de esa representaciónsurge de la doble situación del sujeto como creador y conservador de lacultura, posición ésta que impide la ubicación del texto en la categoría detestimonio
Ficciones: Argentina in V. S. Naipaul’s The Return of Eva Perón and Colm Tóibín’s The Story of the Night
No full textDrawing on their travels to Argentina under the last military regime (1976-1983) and its aftermath, V. S. Naipul and Colm Tóibín produced narratives about the country that are worth examining for the different versions of our recent history displayed by both works for an English-speaking readership. In The Return of Eva Perón Naipaul turned his experience of Argentina into a series of virulent journalistic articles ascribing its postcolonial condition mostly to Argentineans themselves. For his part, Tóibín chose Argentina as the bleak backdrop to his first gay novel, The Story of the Night, an inhospitable home in which its main character has to find the fragments of his identity. From a comparative perspective, I briefly describe in this reflective paper the key themes used by Naipaul and Tóibín in their portrayal of Argentina, and I study the divergent points of view towards the times under consideration that the writers adopt in view of their differing ideological agendas. Whereas Naipaul’s travelogue is grounded on its exceptional literary quality but on truths that call to be disputed; even though set in a relatively realistic context, Tóibín’s novel summons the reader to a serious interrogation of the premises upon which the Argentine reality of the 1980s and 1990s is based. I finally discuss the forever-fictional quality attributed to or inflicted on the representation of the country by both journalists and writers. Throughout the text, I keep to a rather intimate tone and to my perspective as a member to the culture under representation

No full textEl trabajo describe someramente las actltudes de Ernesto Galarza, Richard Rodriguez y Glora Anzaldúa para con los procesos de escolarización según se deduce de sus obras Barrio Boy. The Story of a Boy's Acculturation, Hunger of Memory, The Education of Richard Rodriguez An Autobiography y Borderland/La frontera. The New Mestiza, respectivamente. Muestra además el modo en que dicho proceso ha afectado la construcción de sus respectivas imágenes autobiográficas. La escolarización les ha permitido acceder no sólo a los discursos sociales sino también a la docencia universitaria cuya función se basa en mantener o modificar dichos discursos. Puede alegarse que la elección de dicha profesión influye también en el uso de la autobiografía, género didáctico por excelencia, para hacer públicas sus distintas experiencias educativas y sus propuestas de pedagogías fundadas en dichas trayectorias
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
