Wood.Held in the Russell L. and Lyn Wood Mining History Archive, Arthur Lakes Library, Colorado School of Mines.Donor: Russell L. Wood. The Iron Cliffs Mining Company opened the Barnum pit mine near Ishpeming in 1868. The New Barnum underground mine shown here was opened nearby in the early 1880s and later became known as the Cliffs Shaft. The 'Old Barnum' pit closed in 1897. The Cliffs Shaft became one of the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company's principle mines. Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company was formed with the merger of two major iron mining companies on Michigan's Marquette Range in 1891. The Company had a number of mines operating in the Upper Peninsula by the outbreak of World War I. By the 1940s the high grade iron ores mined underground were becoming depleted. The Company developed a process to concentrate low grade ores into iron ore pellets in the 1950s, and C.C.I.C.'s last underground iron mine closed in 1979

Book fair 2013.xxii, 382 p. :Usability Testing Essentials provides readers with the tools and techniques needed to begin usability testing or to advance their knowledge in this area. The book begins by presenting the essentials of usability testing, which include focusing on the user and not the product; knowing when to conduct small or large studies; and thinking of usability as hill climbing. It then reviews testing options and places usability testing into the context of a user-centered design (UCD). It goes on to discuss the planning, preparation, and implementation of a usability test. The remaining chapters cover the analysis and reporting of usability test findings, and the unique aspects of international usability testing. This book will be useful to anyone else involved in the development or support of any type of product, such as software or web developers, engineers, interaction designers, information architects, technical communicators, visual or graphic designers, trainers, user-assistance specialists, and instructional technologists. • Provides a comprehensive, step-by-step guide to usability testing, a crucial part of every product’s development • The fully updated four-color edition now features important usability issues such as international testing, persona creation, remote testing, and accessibility • Follow-up to Usability Testing and Research (9780205315192, Longman, 2001), winner of the highest-level award from the Society for Technical Communication From the Back Cover: "What makes so many products so difficult for the average person to use?"Carol Barnum posits this question in her introduction to this book. Too many perfectly functioning products are being returned because they are not usable. Strong usability testing is the key. But what do we do if under a strict budget and time constraints? How do we properly prepare, test, analyze, and measure across a multitude of cultures, generations, and countries? There are many different testing methods and numerous situations in which to test; however, all are grounded in the same basics of usability testing. Usability Testing Essentials presents a practical, step-by-step approach to learning the entire process of planning and conducting a usability test. It also explains how to analyze and apply the results and what to do when confronted with budgetary and time restrictions. This is the ideal book for anyone involved in usability or user-centered design―from students to seasoned professionals

Mjera Barnumovog efekta konstruirana u svrhe ovog istraživanja, a osim nje korištene su još Rotterova skala unutrašnjeg naprama vanjskom mjestu kontrole potkrepljenja, Skala praznovjerja te Kratki HEXACO Inventar. Nije dobivena statistički značajna povezanost Barnumovog efekta s praznovjerjem i lokusom kontrole. The aim of this study was to examine the Barnum effect and its association with the locus of control, superstition, and personality traits of the HEXACO model. The Barnum effect is expressed as the degree to which individuals accept general feedback about their own traits as true. The research was conducted live on N=141 students of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek. The measure of the Barnum effect was constructed for the purposes of this research and, in addition to it, the following instruments were used: Rotter's Internal-External Locus of Control Scale, the Superstition Scale, and Brief HEXACO Inventory. No statistically significant association of the Barnum effect with superstition and the locus of control was found. No statistically significant association of the Barnum effect with personality traits was found, other than with openness to experience. It has been found that personality traits, especially openness to experience, are statistically significant predictors of the Barnum effect. The results are reviewed in the context of reliability difficulties in this study and in the context of difficulties with research of the Barnum effect in general. Finally, recommendations for future research in the context of methodology are given, as well as implications of this research in different contexts

RELEVANCE OF INTERPRETATION AS THE DETERMINANT OF THE BARNUM EFFECT

    No full text
The current research features the relevance of the psychological portrait as a factor of influence on the Barnum effect. The article contains some definitions of the phenomenon in question, as well as some other relevant concepts. It offers a brief review of the literature on the matter. The subjects of the research were full-time students of the Far East Federal University and the Admiral Nevelskoy Maritime State University, who were offered to relate a trivial personal description to their self-concept. The study was carried out in accordance with the standard procedure used in empirical studies of the Barnum effect. The processing of the obtained data was carried out with the help of the Pearson statistical criterion χ2 . Based on the results of the study, a statistically significant difference in the assessment of the accuracy of the trivial personal description was found. The difference depends on the type of relevance, which clarifies the current understanding of the Barnum effect. The conclusion features some further ways of investigating the Barnum effect and using the obtained data.</jats:p

Diffusive author(s), cohesive author: Analysis of S/N (1994)

    No full text
This study indicates the ways in which various aspects of the author(s) are brought forth in Dumb type’s performance art, the S/N production. Previous research has suggested a non-hierarchical organization of Dumb type and the absence of a “privileged author” in Dumb type’s collaborative work, S/N. However, the results that I have investigated from member’s interviews on the creative process of S/N along with my analysis of the recorded images of S/N, indicate a different aspect of the author(s). First, S/N was created through, so to speak, the collective ideas of the members of Dumb type. Further, S/N has at least nine quotations from previous performances, installations, and printed writings, besides the work-in-progress technique. Explicating one of the “author functions” as given by Michel Foucault, each text has plural subjects of the author. However, it has been revealed from members’ interviews that Teiji Furuhashi had a decision-making role in selecting the members’ ideas within the performance. Since then, S/N has had plural subjects of creation; however, Furuhashi is one of the subjects of creation along with the “privileged author.” S/N has plural authors (diffusive authors) yet at the same time, it has a “privileged author,” Teiji Furuhashi (cohesive author)
