Giuseppe Barbieri fra Pozzo e i Bibiena

    No full text

    One or more Higgs bosons?

Now that one has been found, the search for signs of more scalars is a primary task of current and future experiments. In the motivated hypothesis that the extra Higgs bosons of the next-to-minimal supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) be the lightest new particles around, we outline a possible overall strategy to search for signs of the CP-even states. This work complements Ref. arXiv:1304.3670.Now that one has been found, the search for signs of more scalars is a primary task of current and future experiments. Depression of windup of spinal neurons in the neonatal rat spinal cord in vitro by an NK3 tachykinin receptor antagonist

The effects of the NK3 tachykinin receptor antagonist SR 142801 on synaptic transmission and spike windup induced by trains of stimuli applied to a dorsal root were investigated with intra- and extracellular recording from the neonatal rat spinal cord in vitro. SR 142801 (10 muM) reduced the depolarization (recorded from lumbar ventral roots) induced by senktide (an NK3 agonist) more strongly than the one evoked by substance P methyl ester (SPMeO; an NK1 agonist). Nevertheless, after a long (>2 h) application time, SR 142801 largely depressed the response to SPMeO as well. When NK1 or NK3 receptors were blocked by >50% in the presence of SR 142801, there was also a significant reduction in the cumulative depolarization induced by repeated stimuli to a single dorsal root. This blocking action by SR 142801 was also observed in the presence of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist D-aminophosphonovalerate (APV) and the calcium channel blocker nifedipine. Intracellular data from lumbar motoneurons showed that the spike windup was the first and most sensitive target for the SR 142801 blocking effect. Increasing stimulus strength to dorsal root fibers could partly surmount such a block. SR 142801 per se had no direct action on fast synaptic transmission, membrane potential, or input resistance. These findings indicate that SR 142801 could lead to an early, large reduction in the windup of action potential discharge by motoneurons, suggesting its ability to suppress the reflex component of central sensitization evoked by repeated dorsal root stimuli

Non-home biased individuals’ investment choices: the role of the birthplace of investors

    No full text
This paper investigates the determinants of non-home biased investment behaviour among individual investors, focusing on birthplace as an explanatory factor. Using microdata from the 2022 wave of the Bank of Italy’s Household Income and Wealth Survey, which distinguishes Italian citizens born in Italy from those born abroad but living in Italy, a two-stage Heckman selection model is implemented to explore both the likelihood of investing in foreign assets and the extent of such investments. The results show that individuals born outside Italy are significantly more likely to invest in foreign securities, underscoring the role of birthplace in reducing home bias. Furthermore, non-home bias is positively associated with higher education levels, greater financial wealth, and higher risk tolerance, while age has a slight negative effect on the proportion of investment made abroad. Interestingly, the analysis reveals a negative relationship between income class and share of foreign investments, suggesting that wealthier individuals may allocate a smaller portion of their portfolios to foreign assets, despite higher participation rates. The analysis contributes to the literature by identifying birthplace as a significant factor shaping investment decisions and extends the understanding of behavioural finance beyond traditional home bias studies. These findings have practical implications for financial advisors and regulators, helping them tailor portfolio recommendations and evaluate investor suitability based on socio-demographic and behavioural characteristics

Il Selvaggio is an undoubtedly minor chivalresque poem composed by one Giovambattista Cortese from Bagnacavallo in Romagna. In 1535, probably some years after the author had died, the work was published in Venice by the Nicolini da Sabbio printing firm. The privilege for the edition was requested by a certain Andrea Trevisan. The edition is interesting for a curious woodcut placed at the end of the volume, depicting a reversed view of St Mark’s Square together with the inscription “Nemo hoc signo imprimere audeat”. At the top of the woodcut the atmospheric phenomenon known as parhelia or ‘sundogs’ is shown. The upper part of the woodcut, cut away from the original woodblock, appears again in an edition published in 1536 (on the subject of an occurrence of this phenomenon) which until now has always been thought to have been printed in Rome
