Gościniec abo krotkie opisanie Warszawy (The Road or a Short Description of Warsaw), written in 1643 by Adam Jarzębski, is an entertaining read for lovers of Old Polish poetry, but for art historians and enthusiasts of Warsaw, it serves as an invaluable source of information. The descriptions it offers of manors and palaces vary in both accuracy and detail. Some are elaborated upon in extensive “poems” (such as the palaces of the Kazanowski and Ossoliński families or the royal residences), while others are mentioned only briefly. These references nevertheless provide insight into who maintained permanent residences in the parliamentary city of the First Polish Republic, and where these residences may have been located. Jarzębski lists over ninety such properties in his text. In many cases, their identification is straightforward, but some buildings mentioned in Gościniec are difficult to place on the contemporary map of Warsaw. One such example is the residence of Hieronim Wołłowicz, the Samogitian staroste. The Wołłowicz family tied its political and economic fortunes to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. As early as the 15th century, it had risen to a prominent position within the Lithuanian nobility, owing largely to its ties with the Jagiellonian court during the reign of King Casimir. Initially, the family’s estates were concentrated in the Grodno region, though they later expanded into Podlasie. The owner of the Warsaw estate, Hieronim Wołłowicz, was politically active during the reigns of Kings Stefan Batory and Sigismund III Vasa, holding the offices of Field Treasurer and Grand Treasurer of Lithuania, and, in 1618, Deputy Chancellor of Lithuania. From 1589 to 1618, he also served as royal secretary. Beginning in 1619, he held the post of staroste of Samogitia, one of the most senior offices in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Occupying high-ranking positions at the royal court at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, Hieronim likely decided to purchase a plot of land in the so-called Zakroczym Suburb. The location of the Wołłowicz manor house aligns with a type of residential layout that was extremely popular in Warsaw until 1655. Do takich należałaby siedziba starosty żmudzkiego Hieronima Wołłowicza. Ród Wołłowiczów swą karierę polityczną i gospodarczą związał z terenami Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Sibi, suisque et Patriae ornamento. Fundacje artystyczne Koniecpolskich w XV–XVII wieku

Na dwu terenach dawnej Rzeczypospolitej rodzina ta odgrywała niezwykle ważną rolę: w okresie średniowiecza i wczesnej nowożytności były to ziemie Polski Centralnej, w XVII wieku – tereny południowo-wschodnich Kresów.

Hetman’s investments in the 17th century. Between self and state interest

    Get PDF
At the end of the 16th century, the principle of the lifelong functioning of the hetman’s office was established. Perhaps it is no coincidence that the performing of hetmans function resulted in large-scale, sometimes exceptionally modern investments, they were: Zamość, Żołkiew, Brody, Stanisławow, Kudak and Okopy Św. Trojcy. The defense of the south-eastern borderland territories, where the hetmans had their greatest latifundia, initiated the creation of fortresses, centers of these latifundia, and at the same time created an effective system of defense of the entire state against Tatar and Turkish threats and Cossack uprisings. Stanisław Koniecpolski stood out, initiating the creation of a number of smaller fortresses – the most famous of them is Kudak - or Nowy Koniecpol, strengthening Bar with more modern fortifications, thinking about creating a Knight School in Lviv. What is worth emphasizing is the evolution of defense devices from simple bastions like in Żołkiew, through Brody bastions to modern, with panache designed fortifications surrounding Lviv at the end of the 17th century built on the initiative of Hetman Stanisław Jabłonowski. Another interesting problem are the mutual relations between the fortress and the residence, such as Brody and Podhorce, Lviv and Podkamień. The hetman-latifundists did not try to modernize the acquired older castles, such as Stanisław Koniecpolski, who did not modernize the sixteenth-century bastion system of castles in Mikuliniec and Jazłowiec. The Hetman’s office began to function as a permanent element of the political system of the Republic of Poland relatively late, so the hetman’s presence in the Senate was ensured by such additional dignities as the chancellor’s office – Zamoyski, Żołkiewski, and the castellan of Krakow – Koniecpolski, Jabłonowski. Only Stanisław Koniecpolski felt the need to emphasize his additional dignity by founding in the capital of Myślenice eldership, which was an endowment of the castellan dignity, in Myślenice a chapel for the miraculous image of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Summing up, the founding initiatives of the hetmans as state ministers and latifundists in the 17th century are extremely closely intertwined, which resulted from their involvement in the organization of the protection of their own estates most often located in the eastern borderlands of the country, particularly exposed to military actions in the 17th century.W końcu XVI wieku ustaliła się zasada dożywotniego funkcjonowania urzędu hetmańskiego.

A Minaret or Minarets in the Cathedral in Kamieniec Podolski?

    No full text
In works devoted to the history of Kamieniec Podolski accounts of its restoration to the Poles according to the provisions of the Karłowice peace treaty of 1699 are rather scarce. The celebration is described of the handing the town keys to Poles by the Turks leaving the town, and the religious setting of the celebration of the return is still not presented precisely enough. On the basis of the preserved archival materials the event is shown in the present text. Another problem is the form of the cathedral at the times when the town was occupied by the Turks – was it decorated with one or two minarets? A detailed analysis of the preserved sources does not solve the problem unambiguously; its elucidation will probably be possible when the future studies of the foundation remains preserved at the facade of the cathedral are made; the foundations were found during the survey conducted in Kamieniec before 1918
