abstract: Many countries are in the process of modernizing, which means, among other things, that their population growth is slowing while education, health care, transportation, and communication are improving. The results of modernization are political, economic, social, and technological. Results of modernization and implications for music, education, and music education include: (1) increasing political egalitarianism implies less censorship of music, education, and music education; (2) increasing wealth should lead to more access to music instruction and technology; (3) more formal education will provide more opportunities for music education for children and university students; (4) smaller families could lead to more reliance on institutions for music instruction; (5) increasing social problems, including weaker community ties, may lead to more reliance on institutions for music instruction and less interest in folk music; (6) greater separation of church and state will result in less teaching of religious music; (7) technological innovations will lead to more and different electronic teaching of music; (8) more multitasking will require the teaching of music technology; (9) increasing multiculturalism will require ongoing examinations of which music to teach; and (10) advancing popular culture will result in more popular music being taught. More egalitarian societies may also require more practice-oriented and less intellectual approaches to music. Professional practice in modernizing countries will tend more toward inclusion and less toward exclusion. Developing Learner Autonomy in Vocabulary Learning in Classroom: How and Why can it be Fostered?

    No full text
AbstractVocabulary learning is one of the most challenging issues that EFL learners face. In the past the learners depended on their teachers but new teaching methodologies encourage learner autonomy. At the university level, learners should become more autonomous in learning foreign language vocabulary and try to find different ways of how to become more successful learners. At the university level learners are forced to become autonomous and make conscious efforts to learn vocabulary outside of the classroom simply because exposure to target language is limited in university classes. Consequently, the autonomy of the learner play an important role in developing and enhancing their vocabulary. This paper aims at exploring the application of learner autonomy in the context of vocabulary learning for English language students. It also proposes the importance of learner's autonomy in vocabulary learning and learning strategies. Furthermore; it clarifies why teachers should enhance learner autonomy in vocabulary learning by exploring the role of both the teachers and learners, how teachers can promote learner autonomy in vocabulary learning and the expected effects of learner autonomy in vocabulary learning

Jane Eyre As The Reformed Pamela: A Contrastive Analysis of the Courtship Patterns in Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre and Samuel Richardson's Pamela.

    No full text
This paper investigates the questions of Charlotte Bronte's gothic romance novel, Jane Eyre (1847) and its underlying references to Samuel Richardson's Pamela (1740). The paper focuses on comparing the courtship narrative of the stated novels in terms of author's gender authority, interest of the period in which the work is written and the impact of these factors have on the final product. After Jane Eyre was published, critics accused Bronte of creating a heroine that does not properly represent the nineteenth century image of a governess. Additionally, Jane Eyre was compared to Pamela in terms of being an unrealistic heroine who marries a reformed rake, but uses passionate expressions that are improper for her time. This kind of review helps one analyze the relationship between the stated novels and dissect their differences. The paper uses a historic feminist approach to identify the role of gender authority in delivering a realistic romance novel. The result adds to the evidence of female writer's contribution to rewriting history, in this case-the history of the courtship novel. Bronte exposes the flaws in Richardson's famous model of courtship through resetting the sequence of the shared courtship patterns based on importance: communication, mutual understanding and passion. The importance of the study is that it shows a novel's, and other media's, ability to redefine certain concepts, such as love, through rewriting the model to suit the goal of its creator. These mediums of thought can eventually change the ideals on love and marriage that were previously known to their audience. These shifts can be seen through studying the models of romance displayed in various forms of modern literature

abstract: This research aims to investigate the effect of campus courtyards on students’ satisfaction with education. It will look into two different types of courtyard within the Arizona State University. One courtyard space has more elements and attributes of biophilic design and the other has less. In addition, this paper will provide guidelines for designing courtyards that would improve student’s satisfaction with education. The Methodology used is survey handouts to students after the researcher selects the two types of courtyards by observation. The participant in this study are randomly picked young adult college students (n=60). The results indicate a positive effect of biophilic design on student’s satisfaction with education in courtyards. Furthermore, guidelines for designing courtyards based on biophilic design elements and attributes are suggested.Dissertation/ThesisMasters Thesis Design 201
