Reconceptualizing Citizen Media:A Preliminary Charting of a Complex Domain
No full textThis chapter draws on established scholarship in a variety of disciplines, the rich contributions to the current volume, and a wide range of concrete examples of different practices to chart the territory of citizen media as an emerging field of study and offer a critical examination of the main concepts that underpin it: public(s), citizen/citizenship and media. It further explores a range of features that characterize and delimit the concept of citizen media from related terms such as citizen and participatory journalism, alternative, radical and community media, and social and digital media. We conclude with a provisional definition of citizen media that encompasses content and practices, values and narratives, the collective and the individual, the local and the global, the concrete and the virtual, and that acknowledges the complex dynamic of appropriation and reverse appropriation within which all citizen media initiatives operate
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Análise da tradução do item lexical evidence para o português com base em um corpus jurídico

Programa de Pós-Graduação em Estudos de Tradução.Esta pesquisa, com base na Lingüística de Corpus, faz uma análise das escolhas lexicais feitas pelos tradutores do item lexical evidence. O objetivo é examinar se as traduções de textos jurídicos, alinhados em um corpus paralelo, podem auxiliar no treinamento de tradutores para que possam solucionar problemas de ordem morfológica, semântica e sintática. Esta coleção de textos, que contempla o par lingüístico inglês?português, foi extraída de documentos jurídicos constantes no site de um organismo internacional, utilizando a World Wide Web como fonte de pesquisa. A análise desses documentos está embasada nos quatro tipos de correspondências tradutórias de Martha Thunes (1998), que elaborou uma escala hierárquica para a tradução, indo da forma mais simples, como o tipo 1 (tradução palavra por palavra), passando pelos tipos 2 (tradução quase de palavra por palavra) e 3 (há grandes diferenças entre os constituintes), até chegar à forma mais complexa (tipo 4: em que não há representações semânticas iguais). Os resultados indicam que, por meio da construção de um corpus bilíngüe paralelo, é possível estabelecer comparações entre tradução e original, auxiliando o tradutor nas suas escolhas lexicais e sugerindo melhoras nos dicionários bilíngües especializados na área jurídica. Essa análise dos dados sintetiza um conjunto de conhecimentos que podem contribuir efetivamente para os Estudos da Tradução. Podem também auxiliar tanto tradutores experientes quanto tradutores em formação a extrair grandes quantidades de textos da Internet por meio do computador e construir seu próprio corpus de estudo. This research, based on Corpus Linguistics, analyses the translators' lexical choices of the lexical item evidence based in a parallel corpus. The texts are legal documents extracted from an international organization. The analysis is based upon Martha Thunes' four types of translational correspondences. On this scale Thunes goes from the simplest one (type 1 - word-by-word) till the more complex (type 4 - there are great semantic differences between original and translated texts). The results indicate that using a bilingual parallel corpus it is possible to compare original and translated texts. And that it is possible to improve specialized bilingual dictionaries in legal area. This analysis can be developed in the area of the Translation Studies and can help translators and learners to use Internet as a great source of texts, using the computer
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
