A man whose work has earned him respect and adoration all across the globe. For some architecture is a profession for others passion. When passion urged to serve society it becomes revolution. Laurie Baker was one such architect who thought about the poor and aspired a dwelling for everybody. Bakers design was simple yet attractive aiming at less consumption of energy as in the Hostel building of Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram. Baker’s designs are generally accomplished with brick work and vernacular material like lime, mangaloretile, stone, etc. Centre for Development Studies (CDS) located in residential area on northern outskirts of Trivandrum is one of the finest achievements of Laurie Baker. CDS 10 acre campus stretches across heavily contoured and wooded site housing the Library, Computer centre, Auditorium, Guest house, Residential unit for staff. CDS architecture varies from area to area and major emphasis is laid on using local material that consume less energy and provide a comfortable environment for living. It is a pleasure to see CDS on sloping contoured site whose each structure curled in a wave, semicircle n arc

This poster was presented by Alam, I., Teacher Candidates' opinions about Augmented Reality(AR) as a supplemental educational tool. Presented at 10th Annual Graduate and Professional Student Conference, held at Memorial Union, Ames, IA, April 6 2022. Posted with permission. In recent years, augmented reality (AR) technology has been widely proposed as innovative technology. AR technology superimposes digitally simulated information on the physical environment, which can be a unique element for learning experiences. Despite the potential of AR, there has been relatively little integration of AR into the classroom. The purpose of this pilot study is to examine the acceptance and intentional use of AR technology by teacher candidates and their opinions of AR as a supplemental educational tool. The study has utilized a phenomenological design that is comprised of System Usability Scale survey and interview questions. Based on the participants' answers, research data has been analyzed and discussed

Nonlinear stories told by cups and saucers: Smart replic as with response 3D audio

In museum exhibitions historical objects are usually shown by visual display, in a showcase with extra textual information added to it. Museum visitors can never touch the objects, let alone use them. As a result, visitors ‘scan’ the displayed objects from a distance, something that needs reconsideration in our present time where the ‘experience’ is essential. To provide a way around this situation, the so-called ‘smart replica’ was proposed in the previous issue of Ar[t] (Roozenburg, 2012): a new kind of reproduction, in the shape of a 3D print, that stretches the boundaries of the replica’s concept as an autonomous object based on a historical artefact. New methods of access and new digitization strategies based on the study of the relationship between the ‘bits’ and ‘atoms’ are being developed. We hypothesize that by using these 3D imaging techniques the value of our cultural heritage can be increased. In other words, the goal is not to make the most realistic copy of the original, but to analyse, communicate and enhance those qualities of the historical artefact that are the most meaningful to us, now. Here we present the design project of Lotte de Reus in connection with this paradigm shift. Completed as a graduation project, it presents an auditory environment to augment the artefact in an unobtrusive and non-linear way. The objects that are central in this project are seven teacups and saucers that are part of the collection of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. These are currently on display in a new exhibition on design and pre-industrial design. Depicted in figure 1, each of these teacup and saucer sets represents a milestone in the Dutch history of porcelain. Starting with the first import of porcelain from China in the seventeenth century by the Dutch East Indies Company; followed by the invention of Delft’s blue as an attempt to copy Chinese porcelain, and ending with the small scale production of porcelain in the Netherlands.Design EngineeringIndustrial Design Engineerin

The depth profiling of organic and inorganic materials using Ar+ and Ar+n ion beams.

Gas cluster ion beam instruments represent the cutting edge in polymer depth profiling technology. This is because they can be used to analyse polymer samples while preserving the delicate chemical structure often lost when more conventional ion beams are used. In this thesis thorough investigations are conducted into the various advantages and disadvantages of using both Ar+ and Ar+n ions to analyse organic, inorganic and multi-layer samples by XPS and ToF-SIMS depth profiling. Analytical techniques including XPS, ToF-SIMS, AFM and laser interferometry were utilised to measure chemical and physical changes induced in samples by the two Ar ion species both during depth profiling and following crater formation. Significant observations were made in Ar+n depth profiling of inorganic metal oxide samples of effects not previously reported in the literature as well as the detection of the damage layer induced in polymer samples by cluster ions. This includes a reduction in levels of preferential sputtering in Ar+n compared to Ar+ depth profiles. Ar+n depth profiles of Ta2O5 on Ta and SiO2 on PET are also shown to lack the so-called “steady-state” region observed in Ar+ depth profiles. Evidence of O diffusion from the Ta2O5 layer to the underlying Ta metal is also reported in depth profiles acquired using Ar+n ions but not Ar+ ions. A method for the measurement of the rapid ejection of organic material at an inorganic/organic multi-layer interface is demonstrated showing a clear variation between the material ejection between Ar+ and Ar+n ion exposure. The observations discussed have serious implications for the current understanding of Ar+n bombardment of inorganic sample materials some of which have been published in the literature
