The oxidation of copper does not only lead to an unusable saucepan, but also toone of the most fascinating family of materials: the cuprates. Their largesuperconducting critical temperature first attracted the scientific community’sattention, which led to the discovery of a rich and complex phase diagram.Although it is known that the two-dimensional CuO2 planes are responsible formost of the observed low-energy properties, a complete theoretical understandingis still missing. It is indeed immensely difficult to build an efficient theory of thecuprates, for they are strongly correlated systems: the kinetic energy and theCoulomb interaction are of the same order, thus preventing the use of perturbation theory or weak/strong-coupling approximations. In this thesis, weinvestigate the spectral and magnetic properties of two copper oxide systems: Ca2-xNaxCuO2Cl2 (Na-CCOC) and tetragonal CuO (t-CuO).We study the pseudogap phase of the hole-doped Na-CCOC, which has a simple crystal structure and is notsuperconducting in the low doping region (x<0.1). By a combination of densityfunctional theory (DFT), cellular dynamical mean-field theory (CDMFT) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) we find that the antiferromagneticfluctuations play a predominant role in the opening of the pseudogap, in line with the literature. Performing self-consistent Born approximation calculations for an effective spin model, we interpret the “waterfall” feature of the spectral function as stemming from a cross-over between a spin-polaron close to the Fermi energy and a Hubbard band at higher energy, which is well captured by an atomic limit approximation.t-CuO has an even simpler crystal structure than Na-CCOC: it is composed of two-dimensional CuO planes with a tetragonal symmetry, stacked above a SrTiO3 (STO) substrate. An interesting particularity of t-CuO is the experimentally observed decoupling of each of its CuO planes into two weakly-coupled CuO2 sublattices. Performing CDMFT calculations both at zero and finite temperature, using different impurity solvers, we rationalize this behavior as being driven by the strong on-site Coulomb interaction. Indeed, the suppression of the nearest-neighbor self-energy leads to an effective renormalisation of the hopping parameters inducing the strong decoupling. Finally, this translates upon doping into an unusual superconducting order parameter symmetry of type dxy instead of the usual dx2-y2 found in cuprates.Recently, abnormal paramagnetic spin and pinned orbitals moments were observedexperimentally in t-CuO, a surprising finding in regard of all the previous results in the literature. By performing DFT calculations on large unit cells, we show that the insertion of oxygen vacancies at the t-CuO/STO can induce both types of moments. Indeed, a vacancy in the TiO2 leads to the emergence of a 2D electron gas in the CuO interface layer, which can explain the paramagnetic spin moment. The defect also induces large distortions in the CuO layer, leading to a pinning of the orbital moment in-plane, in excellent agreement with the experimental observations.

Oxygen vacancies at the origin of pinned moments in oxide interfaces: the example of tetragonal CuO/SrTiO3_3

11 pages, 9 figuresInternational audienceObtaining an accurate theoretical description of the emergent phenomena in oxide heterostructures is a major challenge. Recently, intriguing paramagnetic spin and pinned orbital moments have been discovered by x-ray magnetic circular dichro\"ism measurements at the Cu L2,3L_{2,3}-edge of a tetragonal CuO/SrTiO3_3 heterostructure. Using first principles calculations, we propose a scenario that explains both types of moments, based on the formation of oxygen vacancies in the TiO2_2 interface layer. We show the emergence of a paramagnetic 2D electron gas hosted in the interface CuO layer. It is invisible at the Ti L2,3L_{2,3}-edge since the valence of the Ti atoms remains unchanged. Strong structural distortions breaking both the local and global fourfold rotation C4C_4 symmetries at the interface lead to the in-plane pinning of the Cu orbital moment close to the vacancy. Our results, and in particular the pinning of the orbital moment, may have implications for other systems, especially monoxide/dioxide interfaces with similar metal-oxygen bond length and weak spin-orbit coupling

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
