Intertextual strategies in African and Caribbean fiction: discourses of post-independence problem-space in Sylvia Wynter, George Lamming, Grace Odot, and Ngugi Wa Thiongo
“Intertextual Strategies in African and Caribbean Fictions” is concerned with modes of narrative emplotment in post-independence writing in Africa and the Caribbean. In the two regions, anti-colonial narratives have been dominant for some time. These self-determination narratives construct what David Scott calls a “space of experience” where the present has triumphed over the oppression of the past and looks toward a “horizon of expectation” in the post-independence period. These Romance narratives, the work argues along with Scott, have lost their explanatory value. This is because questions that those in the post-liberation period ask have changed, and so the Romance narratives no longer provide answers. The dissertation pays close attention to primary texts and authors. The discussion also includes theoretical and critical texts from both Africa and the Caribbean. It uses Sylvia Wynter’s The Hills of Hebron (1962), George Lamming’s Water with Berries (1971), Grace Ogot’ The Strange Bride (1989), and Ngugi wa Thiongo’s Matigari (1987) to show that the Romance narrative mode of emploting the movement of history is inconsistent with the issues which concern post-independence problem-space. In its consideration of these works, it argues that the problem-space of anti-colonial nationalists should not be taken as a monument entrenched in stone that is designed by its creators to have a fixed meaning. Of course, the connection between anti-colonial nationalists and autonomy is vital; but the novels examined here show that the end of colonial rule also produced significant changes in the consideration of historical form and mode of narrative emplotment. The work argues that the transition from colonial rule to independence demands the emplotment mode of tragedy. It highlights the role of tragedy in historical change at the same time as it demonstrates that the novels discussed here call for a re-imagination in the post-independence problem-space.Ph. Interleaved EEC Coding for a Direct Sequence CDMA System in Land-Mobile Satellite Channel
The performance of forward error correction codes and the respective interleaved codes for a direct-sequence code division multiple access system in a bursty land-mobile satellite channel have been evaluated in terms of throughput and delay. The FEC scheme used the Reed-Solomon and BCH codes. Interleaved codes were compared with non-interleaved versions. Results are presented for heavy shadowing conditions in a fast as well as a slow fading environment. These results show only a modest improvement due to interleaving with very little effect on average delay.Applied SciencesElectrical EngineeringTelecommunications and Traffic Control Systems Grou
Twisting and Rieffel's deformation of locally compact quantum groups. Deformation of the Haar measure.
We develop the twisting construction for locally compact quantum groups. A new feature, in contrast to the previous work of M. Enock and the second author, is a non-trivial deformation of the Haar measure. Then we construct Rieffel's deformation of locally compact quantum groups and show that it is dual to the twisting. This allows to give new interesting concrete examples of locally compact quantum groups, in particular, deformations of the classical group and of the Woronowicz' quantum group
Technical project report for the construction of the new office block in Pallisa Dlg, Pallisa district.
A project report submitted to the Directorate of Research and Graduate Training in partial fulfillment of the requirements for award of Postgraduate Diploma in Construction and Project Management of Makerere University.Makerere University requires Post Graduate Diploma students of Construction and Project Management at the College of Engineering Design Art and Technology to participate in internship and write-up a technical report about the activities undertaken in the implementation of a construction project. Factors Associated with Late Antenatal Initiation among Women in Malawi
Journal Article, Faculty of Humanities ,Population and Health-- Mahikeng CampusBackground
Early initiation of antenatal care (ANC) is critical in identifying and mitigating adverse pregnancy-related complications. However, globally, a high percentage of women initiate ANC only at a late stage of their pregnancy. In view of this, the main objective of the study is to establish the prevalence and factors associated with late ANC initiation among women in Malawi. Methods The study was based on the 2015-16 Malawi Demographic and Health Survey (MDHS). The study population consisted of 13,251 women of reproductive age who had given birth during the five years preceding the survey. The data was analyzed using the chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression.
Results
The prevalence of late ANC initiation in Malawi was 75.6%. The logistic regression modelling revealed increased odds of late ANC initiation attendance among women residing in the Northern Region (AOR: 1.172; 95% CI: 1.021-1.345) and the Central Region (AOR: 1.178; 95% CI: 1.074-1.291), women residing in urban areas (AOR: 1.273; 95% CI: 1.108-1.463), women with no education (AOR: 1.814; 95% CI: 1.13-1.47) or with primary education (AOR: 1.697; 95% CI: 1.13-1.47), women with less than four ANC visits (AOR: 4.155; 95% CI: 4.002-4.814), unmarried women (AOR: 1.478; 95% CI: 1.111-1.985) and those whose last birth was not by caesarean section (AOR: 1.377; 95% CI: 1.179-1.607). Reduced odds of late ANC initiation among women were observed among women in the 20-24 age group (AOR: 0.634; 95% CI: 0.456-0.881), those in the 25-29 age group (AOR: 0.645; 95% CI: 0.476-0.874) and those aged 30-34 years (AOR: 0.634; 95% CI: 0.456-0.881).
Conclusions
The study found that ANC initiation in Malawi is often delayed, with most first visits occurring after the first trimester. Late ANC initiation is associated with region, place of residence, marital status, and the women's age. These are significant factors to be considered when designing new or reviewing ANC policies and strategies aimed at increasing ANC utilization and encouraging early initiation of ANC. Earlier ANC initiation among Malawian women can contribute positively towards improving maternal and child health in Malawi. Therefore, government policies and interventions should target women with no or little education, those living in poor families and other modifiable risk factors, such as young unmarried women.Acknowledgments

Schopenhauer como educador: modelo de uma formação intempestiva
Schopenhauer as educator is the Untimely Third and, in this work, Nietzsche's then master appears as a model educator. Schopenhauer is seen by Nietzsche, at this moment, as an example of genius, because he figured in society as an exception, not as a rule. The university of the time and the state structure are disapproved by Nietzsche, and, to confront them, he uses them as a critical reading key to the thought of the fellow author. We will study, going through Nietzsche's analyses, how Schopenhauer appeared as someone who pointed to an untimely education and how his effort to prioritize singularity can be configured as an artistic perspective as well.Schopenhauer como educador é a terceira, das quatro Considerações Intempestivas e, nesta obra, o então mestre de Nietzsche figura como modelo de educador. Conservadorismo enquanto episteme
To this end, we used guided and directed questions consisting of open questions. Comparative analysis shows that students did not answer the questions so differently than what an eighte-enth-century author advocated as conservatism. Next, the text presents a proposal for the edu-cation professional to approach the term as episteme, even if some textbooks do not expose it to the category and there is no specific requirement of the minimum curriculum in high school on the concept conservatis
