Parallel retrieval of correlated patterns: From Hopfield networks to Boltzmann machines
In this work, we first revise some extensions of the standard Hopfield model in the low storage limit, namely the correlated attractor case and the multitasking case recently introduced by the authors. The former case is based on a modification of the Hebbian prescription, which induces a coupling between consecutive patterns and this effect is tuned by a parameter a. In the latter case, dilution is introduced in pattern entries, in such a way that a fraction d of them is blank. Then, we merge these two extensions to obtain a system able to retrieve several patterns in parallel and the quality of retrieval, encoded by the set of Mattis magnetizations {m(mu)}, is reminiscent of the correlation among patterns. By tuning the parameters d and a, qualitatively different outputs emerge, ranging from highly hierarchical to symmetric. The investigations are accomplished by means of both numerical simulations and statistical mechanics analysis, properly adapting a novel technique originally developed for spin glasses, i.e. the Hamilton-Jacobi interpolation, with excellent agreement. Finally, we show the thermodynamical equivalence of this associative network with a (restricted) Boltzmann machine and study its stochastic dynamics to obtain even a dynamical picture, perfectly consistent with the static scenario earlier discussed.
Abstract : This investigation intends to understand the actions of individuals, mostly peasants, whose means of social reproduction suffered intense changes by the construction of the hydropower plant known as Barra Grande, in the Pelotas river, Uruguay river basin, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul states border, in southern Brazil. Some of these individuals engaged themselves in a series of political actions whose goals shown how threatening this new situation was to their entire region. Meanwhile, they meant to demand compensatory measures due to the drowning and consequently loss of the land where they lived and worked until then. Some these individuals, young at the time these political conflicts occurred, were investigated either due to the need of understanding how they managed to organize their life projects some years after, how these life projects related to the experience of being young and how these life projects took place at the region affected by the hydropower plant whom they struggled against in order to be resettled. Nowadays, these resettlements - relatively near their original land - are their living and working places. The investigative perspective here frames actions and narratives by these subjects, who faced a concrete expression of what is called Brazilian hydropower capitalism, a model of development (both social and economic) whose dynamics are based on violent exploitation of natural resources and on the eviction of entire populations whose mere existence appears as its impediment. Since the mid 60's, this model has been considered inevitable, and this inevitability has become the justification to its endless ("infernal", the German philosopher Walter Benjamin would say) repetition. Along that, several authoritarian and arbitrary measures - of exception, according to Giorgio Agamben - have been taken by both governments and electric companies. The aim of this investigation was to locate social agency that concretely confronts the model. The way to do it was to sociologically reconstruct life projects and trajectories of young individuals affected by the Barra Grande hydropower plant, engaged in politically confronting it and now resettled. It makes possible to critically understand the social consequences of this branch of capitalist progress, strongly based on what David Harvey call accumulation by dispossession

The Lettere of Andrea Calmo: authorial artifices and historical reality
Despite Vittorio Rossi's 1888 edition, Andrea Calmo's collection of "ingegnosi cheribizzi" and "fantastiche fantasie" is still shrouded in a certain mystery. The author, dissimulating his own identity behind the "mask" of the humble Venetian fisherman, was able to offer a cross-section of culture and society in sixteenth-century Venice.
In particular, it is the fourth book of the Letters that has aroused greater interest among scholars and readers: published in 1566, several years after the first three, this book stands out for the fact that all the epistles are addressed to women imaginary or actually existed.
Here we propose, first of all, a study of Calmo's biography accompanied by an analysis of the historical-cultural context of sixteenth-century Venice; secondly, however, a commentary on some letters from the last book of Calmo's work is proposed, which seeks to shed light mainly on the linguistic and content aspect of the text
Effect of different technological processes on the chemical composition of myrtle (Myrtus communis L.) alcoholic extracts
Several technological processes were applied to improve the extraction efficiency in the production of myrtle (Myrtus communis L.) liqueur. The variations in the chemical composition of myrtle hydroalcoholic extracts were monitored in a laboratory scale for 40 days after the application of: double dose of berries; ultrasonic extraction; enzymes, to improve either the color or aroma extraction; and atmosphere saturated with nitrogen to improve the stability against oxidative degradations during extraction. Moreover, freezing at -20 °C was applied to myrtle berries as a technological strategy to prolong the use of berries, and macerates were obtained after 4, 8, and 12 months. Chemical investigation of macerates was performed using different analytical methods such as GC and GC-MS for the volatile compounds, HPLC-PDA for free anthocyanins, and spectrophotometric analysis for CIE L*a*b *coordinates and total anthocyanins. Dry matter and pH were also monitored during maceration. Among the different technological processes, the nitrogen-modified atmosphere was the most suitable technique to be applied in industrial scale. An industrial trial was applied with this process and alcoholic extracts and liqueurs have been obtained. The liqueur maintained a higher amount of anthocyanins, better CIE L*a*b*parameters and superior organoleptic characteristics compared to the traditional storage
