TCC (graduação) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. Centro Sócio-Econômico. Economia.

Alcune riflessioni sull'organizzazione urbana e sulla cronologia dell'impianto

In this paper the author discusses the town plan of Piraeus to shed further light on some aspects he already examined in a previous article (Longo 2008). Starting from the most recent archaeological data that were overlooked in some recent studies, and the literary and epigraphic documentation, the author attempts to capture the essential elements informing the development plan of Hippodamus of Miletus, viz., functionality and the likely pre-existence of the main street axes; the characteristics of the urban grid; a clear demarcation of public and private spaces; and the issue of the location of the two agorai mentioned in literary sources.

    Gamma-ray bursts within fireshell model

This thesis is mainly focused on careful data analysis of different parts of high-energy (sub-keV--GeV) spectra of gamma-ray bursts. All the interpretation works are based on the theoretical ground of the fireshell paradigm which is being continuously developed for over 20 years. The chapters in the main body of the thesis focus on current research and results obtained and published. A distinct emphasis on spectral bands is expressed through structural division of the thesis: soft gamma-ray emission, x-ray afterglow emission and high-energy gamma-ray emission. In Chapter 2 we discuss theoretical and observational evidences which have been recently gained for a two-fold classification of short bursts within the fireshell working paradigm. We present three additional S-GRBs, 081024B, 090510 and 140402A, following the already identified S-GRBs, i.e., 090227B and 140619B. In Chapter 3 we analyze the early X-ray flares in the GRB "flare-plateau-afterglow" (FPA) phase observed by Swift-XRT. We claim that the FPA occurs only in one of the subclasses---binary-driven hypernovae (BdHNe). This subclass consists of long GRBs with a carbon-oxygen core (CO_core) massive star and a neutron star (NS) binary companion as progenitors. In Chapter 4 we examine a scenario when in binary system of neutron star (NS) and massive CO_core star, the latter undergoes a supernova (SN) explosion. A black hole (BH) subsequently originates from the gravitational collapse of the NS caused by hypercritical accretion of the SN ejecta. We infer a new asymmetric morphology for the BdHNe system where the GeV emission occurs within a cone of half-opening angle approximately 60 degrees normal to the orbital plane of the binary progenitor. We confirm that GeV luminosity light curves follow the universal power-law with index of -1.19 +/- 0.04, and from this we further estimate the spin-down rate of the BH

The Author and Authorship in the Internet Society. New Perspectives for Scientific Communication

The Internet is the most recent and relevant innovation in the field of media communication, as well as the medium that reproduces most of the characteristics of global society. In trying to describe contemporary society, we cannot neglect the social implication of the web. Our assumption is that the evolution of the Internet has led to problematic effects on the relevance of concepts such as individuality, author, authorship and copyright, as commonly used up till now. The first part of the article focuses on individuality as a means to describe individual actors and social structures in the first modernity, paying particular attention to the idea of the author as an individual in the field of intellectual products. New communication forms online make the connection between the individuality of the author and the text weaker and less recognizable. The second part develops the theme of scientific knowledge in contemporary society, with regard to scholarly authorship. The Internet has produced deep transformations in scholarly publications. Technical and structural characteristics of the Internet suggest possibilities for a reorganization of the scientific system towards the replacement of authorship and reputation with innovative mechanisms of information processing and selection

Lambda-adic modular symbols over totally real fields

We consider a Hida family of nearly ordinary cusp forms on a quaternion algebra defined over a totally real number field. The aim of this work is to construct a cohomology class with coefficients in a p-adic sheaf over an Iwasawa algebra that can be specialized to cohomology classes attached to classical cusp forms in the given Hida family. Our result extends the work of Greenberg and Stevens on modular symbols attached to ordinary Hida families when the ground field is the field of rational numbers
