The aim of this Master Thesis is to help Company A find new ways to achieve substantial success in the sales of Software X in Finland by comparing the methods and practices applied in its sister companies selling similar software. Software X is sold by Finnish Company A, Swedish Company B and Norwegian Company C. All three companies belong to a Nordic Group Y, The products included in the research are all the Software X launched in Finland.
For carrying out the research, different aspects such as sales growth, best business practices in terms of finding success in sales, and obstacles and challenges organisations face when selling software were studied. The choice of topic was based on the researcher’s interest in increasing the market share of Software X in the Finnish market.
Similar to most case studies, the material of this thesis included reviews of existing historical material as well as personal interviews. Six semi-structured interviews with the representatives of Company A, Company B and Company C were used for data collection in this qualitative single-case study. Secondary data included data from different books, articles, journals and internet sites.
The main findings suggested that the organizational structure of Company A is the biggest obstacle for the success in Software X sales in Finland, but additionally the company should employ its own people and further develop the training and motivation methods of its sales representatives. The Swedish and Norwegian interview forms, empirical findings and the analysis of the interviews written out in Appendix 1, Appendix 2, Appendix 3 and Appendix 4 respectively are considered to be confidential information and, therefore, they are not published in the version accessible through the Kemi-Tornio University of Applied Sciences Library databases

No full textTutkin artikkelissani Cheekin rap-sanoitusten poetiikkaa. Cheek eli Jare Tiihonen on suomalainen rap-artisti, joka päätti suomalaisessa populaarikulttuurissa ennen kokemattomaksi kasvaneen ja vahvasti tunteita herättäneen 20-vuotisen artistiuransa vuonna 2018. Ilmiöön on liittynyt myös mittava ja usein ulkotaiteellisiin seikkoihin kohdistuva mediadiskurssi. Artikkelini näkökulmasta kuitenkin ”alussa oli sana” eli riimivihko, kynä ja kirjoittaja, jolla on perustava vaikutus suomalaisen räpin poetiikkaan. Omaleimainen tapa rakentaa rap-artistiutta suomalaisessa kontekstissa avasi koko lajille uusia mahdollisuuksia valtavirtaan ja nosti esiin uusia konventioita musiikin ja runouden alueilla. Runouden näkökulmasta globaali rap-genre on ilmaisukeinoiltaan rikas, ja sen potentiaali havainnollistuu myös Cheekin tuotannossa. Lähestyn rap-sanoituksia runoutena ja esitän, että poeettinen eli kirjallisuustieteellisesti ilmaisukeinoihin ja niillä rakentuviin merkityksiin tarkentava lukutapa tuo aineistosta esiin uusia merkitystasoja. Cheekin sanoitusten kirjoittajana Tiihonen on mitä suurimmassa määrin tekijä, jolla on merkitsevä poetiikkansa: sanoittamisen lisäksi hän on esimerkiksi säveltänyt, tuottanut ja esittänyt omia kappaleitaan.peerReviewe
How a fragment reflects : Poetics of Volter Kilpi's Archipelago cycle
No full textThis article explores the poetics of Volter Kilpi (1874–1939). Kilpi is known as the Finnish modernist author who wrote a most extraordinary and original series of works collectively known as the “Archipelago cycle” (the first novel of the cycle has been recently translated into German with the title Im Saal von Alastalo). The article uses cognitive poetics (Terence Cave, Caroline Levine and Reuven Tsur) to elucidate Kilpi’s style focusing on the emotional effects of Kilpi’s innovative language and narrative strategies. The role of childhood social position in adult type 2 diabetes: evidence from the English longitudinal study of ageing
No full textBackground: socioeconomic circumstances in childhood and early adulthood may influence the later onset of chronic disease, although such research is limited for type 2 diabetes and its risk factors at the different stages of life. The main aim of the present study is to examine the role of childhood social position and later inflammatory markers and health behaviours in developing type 2 diabetes at older ages using a pathway analytic approach.Methods: data on childhood and adult life circumstances of 2,994 men and 4,021 women from English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) were used to evaluate their association with diabetes at age 50 years and more. The cases of diabetes were based on having increased blood levels of glycated haemoglobin and/or self-reported medication for diabetes and/or being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Father’s job when ELSA participants were aged 14 years was used as the measure of childhood social position. Current social characteristics, health behaviours and inflammatory biomarkers were used as potential mediators in the statistical analysis to assess direct and indirect effects of childhood circumstances on diabetes in later life.Results: 12.6 per cent of participants were classified as having diabetes. A disadvantaged social position in childhood, as measured by father’s manual occupation, was associated at conventional levels of statistical significance with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes in adulthood, both directly and indirectly through inflammation, adulthood social position and a risk score constructed from adult health behaviours including tobacco smoking and limited physical activity. The direct effect of childhood social position was reduced by mediation analysis (standardised coefficient decreased from 0.089 to 0.043) but remained statistically significant (p =?0.035). All three indirect pathways made a statistically significantly contribution to the overall effect of childhood social position on adulthood type 2 diabetes.Conclusions: childhood social position influences adult diabetes directly and indirectly through inflammatory markers, adulthood social position and adult health behaviour
Nykytaide dialogin edistäjänä: teoskuvapankin rakentuminen kansainvälisessä hankkeessa
No full textTutkin pro gradu -tutkielmassani kansainväliseen Comenius-ohjelmaan kuuluvan Creative Connections -hankkeen puitteissa koottua teoskuvapankkia. Tutkimukseni painopiste on teoskuvapankin rakentumisen prosessissa. Creative Connections - hankkeen pyrkimyksenä on tutkia ja kehittää keinoja eurooppalaisten kansojen välisen ymmärryksen lisäämiseksi lasten ja nuorten keskuudessa. Toimintatutkimuksena toteutettavan hankkeen keskiössä on mukana olevien koulujen oppilaiden käsitykset paikallisista, kansallisista ja eurooppalaisista identiteeteistä ja niiden suhteista.
Tutkimukseni kiinnittyy taidekasvatukseen ja erityisesti nykytaiteen pedagogiikkaan. Pro gradu -tutkielmani tutkimusmateriaalin kerääminen tapahtui toimintatutkimuksena huhti–lokakuussa 2012. Tutkielmassani keskityn avaamaan teoskuvapankin valintaprosessia kokonaisuudessaan sekä tuon osan teoskuvista tarkempaan analyysiin havainnollistaakseni valintaprosessia ikonografisen kuva-analyysin kautta.
Tutkimukseeni liittyviä tärkeitä käsitteitä ovat nykytaide, kansallinen ja eurooppalainen identiteetti. Lisäksi olen tarkastellut teoskuvapankin rakentumista suhteessa opetussuunnitelmasta nouseviin lähtökohtiin, erityisesti nuoren oman kulttuuriidentiteetin tukemiseen, aktiiviseen osallistumiseen, oman ympäristön hahmottamiseen ja kehittämiseen sekä toimimiseen monikulttuurisessa yhteisössä.
Valmista teoskuvapankkia voidaan lähestyä eri oppikokonaisuuksina, jotka muodostuvat taiteen eri roolien kautta. Teoskuvapankki on jaettu kategorioihin A-E. A. kategoriassa lähestytään oppilaan henkilökohtaisen kasvun ulottuvuuksia kartoittamalla identiteetin eri puolia ja B. kategoriassa mitä kuuluu ympäröivään kulttuuriin. C. kategorian kautta oppilaita voidaan aktivoida toimimaan reporttereina, jotka kiinnittävät huomiota kulttuuriseen ympäristöön. D. kategoriassa kulttuuri toimii oppaana, joka opastaa näkemään asioita eri tavoin. E. Kategoriassa aktivismi on ohjaavana kulttuurisena tekijänä voidaan oppilaita rohkaista osallistumaan ja toimimaan omassa ympäristössään.
Teoskuvapankki toimii tässä hankkeessa nykytaiteen tarkastelumallina, joka mahdollistaa yhteisöllisen toiminnan ja dialogin monikulttuurisessa ympäristössä. Oppilaat eri maissa tekevät omia töitä teoskuvapankin pohjalta ja vuorovaikutus tapahtuu blogin välityksellä hankkeen sivustolla. Teoskuvapankki tarjoaa eri taiteen lähestymistapojen kautta näkökulmia opettajille kansallisen identiteetin ja monikulttuurisuuden teemojen käsittelyyn opetustyössä.In my Pro Gradu Thesis, I researched the image bank which was created for the international Comenius Creative Connections research project. My research focus was the process of constructing the image bank. The Creative Connections project’s aim was to explore and develop ways of increasing understanding of European identity among children and young people.
The core of the action research project is the participating schools’ students’ perceptions of local, national and European identities and their relationships. My research engages art education, particularly contemporary art pedagogy. My master’s thesis research material was collected through action research between April and October 2012. In my research I focused on explaining the image bank selection process as a whole and illustrating the image selection through iconological analysis.
Important concepts related to this study are contemporary art, national and European identity. In addition, I have reviewed the construction process of the image bank through emerging principles in curriculum, in particular supporting young people’s own cultural identity, active participation of their own perception of the environment and development and working in a multicultural community.
The finished image bank can be approached as different learning entities formed through the various roles of art. The image bank has been divided into categories A-E. The A category approaches the dimensions of the students personal growth by identifying different aspects of identity, and the B category approaches identity from the surrounding culture. The C category activates students to act as reporters who pay attention to the cultural environment. In the D category, culture serves as a guide for seeing things in different ways. In the E category, activism is the guiding factor for encouraging students to participate and act in their own environment.
In this project, the image bank works as a model for analysis of contemporary art, which allows for collaborative activities and dialogue in a multicultural environment. Students from different countries are making their own work based on the image bank and interaction among them takes place on the project’s blog site. The image bank offers various approaches to art so that teachers can deal with the themes of national identity and multiculturalism from different perspectives

This doctoral dissertation focuses on Arvid Järnefelt s (1961 1932) novels Isänmaa (1893), Maaemon lapsia (1905) and Veneh ojalaiset (1909). The study applies the genre theory and concepts Alastair Fowler has introduced in his Kinds of Literature (1982). Fowler s theory of the novel is developed further and applied to Finnish realist novels. The generic analysis is supplemented by intertextual analysis, which is mainly based on the idea of specific intertextual relations as presented by Kiril Taranovsky. Generic and intertextual analyses form the basis for hermeneutic interpretation, in which attention is paid to the fact that the novels are written by the designated writer in specific historical and cultural circumstances. Instead of the author s intention , the study focuses on the realised intention , in other words the novels as they are published.
Järnefelt s first novel Isänmaa is understood to be a classical Bidungsroman that depicts the socialisation of a young male protagonist. From an intertextual point of view, the novel appears to be a novel of conversion, too, due to the biblical allusions concealed in the depiction of the events. Furthermore, Isänmaa is seen to stand in an intertextual relation to Hegel s, Snellman s and Topelius s writings. Maaemon lapsia is argued to be a thesis novel, which persuades the reader to adopt a certain ideological and political stance, namely Henry George s view on the private ownership of land. The novel is modulated by the generic repertoires of fairy tale and tragedy. The mythical frame of the novel supports the thesis novel, as it gives universal validity to the particular events depicted in the novel. Maaemon lapsia also comments on the contemporary political debate on the relations between Finland and Russia by presenting the relationship as analogous to the relationship between tenant farmer and landowner.
Veneh ojalaiset exhibits a wide range of genres. Comic, tragic and mythical mode is combined with, for example, family novel, romance, conversion novel and revolutionary novel. From a rhetorical viewpoint, the novel is an apology, which accuses society of generating criminality by means of unjust laws and procedures. The novel discusses the question of resistance to evil by using the themes of Faust and Job, as well as by confronting the philosophies of Epictetus and Nietzsche. The novel is a thesis novel, which disputes the possibility of violent revolution as a way to a better society and recommends passive resistance for an individual living in an unjust society.
The poetics of Järnefelt s novels is regarded as the poetics of conversion, as all the novels in focus depict the protagonist s awakening to see the society in a new light, be it a patriotic vision of the reality or a conception of the unfairness of society.Arvid Järnefelt (1861−1932) kuului 1800-luvun lopun politiikassa ja taiteessa merkittävästi vaikuttaneeseen Järnefeltien perheeseen. Hänet muistetaan tolstoilaisesta maailmankatsomuksestaan.
Heräämisten poetiikkaa tarkastelee kolmen Järnefeltin yhteiskunnallisen kauden romaanin - Isänmaan (1893), Maaemon lapsien (1905) ja Veneh'ojalaisten (1909) - lajeja ja tekstienvälisiä suhteita. Tutkimus osoittaa, että Järnefelt ei ollut kirjailijana yksioikoinen tolstoilaisuuden saarnamies, vaan hänen analysoidut romaaninsa ovat taiteellisesti monitasoisia, yhteiskunnallista tilannetta ja eräitä filosofisia näkemyksiä kommentoivia teoksia.
Tutkimus osoittaa, että tarkastellut romaanit käyttävät niin klassisen kehitysromaanin, kääntymysromaanin, vallankumousromaanin, tragedian kuin sadun lajirepertoaareja teesiromaanille tyypillisen arvolatautuneen näkemyksen muotoilemiseen. Myös myyttinen kehys toimii teesiromaanin palveluksessa.
Tutkimus kartoittaa romaanien tekstienvälisiä viittauksia ja osoittaa kaunokirjallisiin, filosofisiin ja yhteiskunnallisiin teksteihin kohdistuvien viittausten olevan teosten tulkinnan kannalta relevantteja. Teoksia suhteutetaan niin Raamattuun kuin Hegelin, Topeliuksen, Snellmanin, Henry Georgen, Tolstoin kuin Epiktetoksen, Nietzschen, Goethen ja Maksim Gorkin teoksiin.
Järnefelt kuvaa teoksissaan totuuden tuntoon havahtuvia yksilöitä, oli kyseessä sitten käsitys isänmaallisuuden luonteesta tai yhteiskunnallisesta oikeudenmukaisuudesta. Romaanien poetiikka on tässä mielessä heräämisten poetiikkaa.
Tutkimus täsmentää ja kehittää Alastair Fowlerin teoksessa Kinds of Literature (1982) esittämää lajiteoriaa suomalaisten realististen romaanien lajianalyysin tarpeisiin ja lisää lähestymistapaan aktiivisten intertekstuaalisten suhteiden tarkastelun. Fowlerin tulkintamallissa teoksia hahmotetaan suhteessa laajasti ymmärettyyn syntykontekstiin, ja yleiset hermeneuttiset tulkintaperiaatteet ohjaavatkin tutkimuksessa intertekstuaalisuuden ja lajiteorian käyttöä.

A central role for GRB10 in regulation of islet function in man
No full textVariants in the growth factor receptor-bound protein 10 (GRB10) gene were in a GWAS meta-analysis associated with reduced glucose-stimulated insulin secretion and increased risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) if inherited from the father, but inexplicably reduced fasting glucose when inherited from the mother. GRB10 is a negative regulator of insulin signaling and imprinted in a parent-of-origin fashion in different tissues. GRB10 knock-down in human pancreatic islets showed reduced insulin and glucagon secretion, which together with changes in insulin sensitivity may explain the paradoxical reduction of glucose despite a decrease in insulin secretion. Together, these findings suggest that tissue-specific methylation and possibly imprinting of GRB10 can influence glucose metabolism and contribute to T2D pathogenesis. The data also emphasize the need in genetic studies to consider whether risk alleles are inherited from the mother or the father
