    No full text
International audienceThe Belgian anthropologist Luc de Heusch is the author of some twenty films. Relatively removed from his research concerns, this wide-ranging filmography (documentaries, fiction, surrealist and ethnographic films) can be considered as a twin work, which complements and clarifies the development of his relationship with anthropology. Fête chez les Hamba, produced during a mission in the Congo (1953-1954), offers an opportunity to look back on his relationship with fieldwork and to better understand some of the reasons that led him to give up the ethnography of remote societies, on which he had projected surrealist-inspired expectations, in favor of structural anthropology.L’anthropologue belge Luc de Heusch est l’auteur d’une vingtaine de films.

Carlos Heusch studies a few lines from the Prologue of the \ud Tragicomedy by Fernando de Rojas, which contain according to him the poetics and aesthetic of reception as conceived by the author of La Celestina. \ud Following Rojas, what matters in literature is not the «story» (historia) told \ud but its «particularities» (particularidades), that is to say all those details which \ud give denseness, pleasantness and teachings to a work of arto Thus, the figures \ud of three possible readers emerge: a lousy reader who only takes interest in the \ud «cuento de camino»; a mediocre reader, a «collector» who distorts the literary \ud work by confining himself to pinning down quotations and, at last, an ideal \ud reader who corresponds, mutatis mutandis, to the very humanistic «excellent» \ud reader defined by Erasmus

    Histoire structurale d'une religion africaine

The structural analysis of myth, far from being incompatible with historical interpretation, can in fact be a great aid to it. This article is in response to I. Berger's 1981 reproach of L. de Heusch Rwanda et la civilisation interlacustre (1966) for believing “that spirits, myths and rites form a unified system, reaching across time and space”.The cult of possession of the Kubandwa in the interlacustrian region of Central Africa is seen from both synchronic and diachronic points of view as a system of transformation. Despite new information brought to bear by I. Berger, the author here maintains the essential argument which he put forward in 1966: the myth and initiatory cult of Ryangombe in the southern part of the interlacustrian civilization come from the myth of Wamara and from the worship of Cwezi spirits in Nyoro and Nkore (Uganda).History, as practised by I. Berger and others, is a threat to the very foundations of anthropology

In the production of books about gypsies, it is unusual to find texts that include a direct and close relationship with them, much less that they are written in the form of a diary, as is the case with the recently published book by Luc de Heusch, entitled: Descubriendo a los gitanos. Una expedición de reconocimiento (1961), published for the first time in Spanish by Editorial Universidad de Granada (the first edition in French was published in 1966). This book is the result of a trip made during the summer of 1961, whose objective was to meet the Vlaamse Gemeenschap gypsies (Vlaamse Gemeenschap-Roma, from Belgium) in Europe, to assess the possibility of making a film whose theme was Vlaamse Gemeenschap-Roma. This diary/book is important for getting to know Luc de Heusch, as it introduces us to one of the most personal texts by this author, rarely translated into our language, and essential for understanding the responsibilities associated with otherness, meeting with others, and the colonial and postcolonial implications and responsibilities of Belgium in the African Continent.

Integrin-mediated transcriptional activation of inhibitor of apoptosis proteins protects smooth muscle cells against apoptosis induced by degraded collagen

    No full text
Apoptosis of smooth muscle cells (SMC) and degradation of the extracellular matrix (ECM) have both been implicated in atherosclerotic plaque rupture. We have previously reported that degraded type I collagen fragments induce a rapid but transient apoptotic burst initiated by calpains in SMC. The aim of the current study was to identify the pathway responsible for consecutive SMC survival. We show that exposure of SMC to collagen fragments resulted in a sustained activation of nuclear factor (NF)-{kappa}B via phosphorylation and degradation of I{kappa}B{alpha}. Its prevention through retroviral expression of superrepressor I{kappa}B{alpha} or proteasome inhibition potently induced apoptosis. In the presence of blocking antibodies to {alpha}vß3 integrin and RGD peptides, collagen fragments no longer activated NF-{kappa}B and apoptosis was enhanced. The mechanism by which NF-{kappa}B was protecting SMC against collagen fragment-induced apoptosis was a transcriptional activation of several endogenous caspase inhibitors of the inhibitor of apoptosis protein (IAP) family as: (1) the expression of xIAP, c-IAP2, and survivin was potently induced by collagen fragments; (2) IAP expression was abrogated by superrepressor I{kappa}B{alpha}; and (3) knockdown of each of the 3 IAPs by small interfering RNA (siRNA) resulted in enhanced apoptosis after collagen fragment treatment. Our data suggest that SMC exposed to degraded collagen are protected against apoptosis by a mechanism involving {alpha}vß3-dependent NF-{kappa}B activation with consequent activation of IAPs. This may constitute a novel antiapoptotic pathway ensuring SMC survival in settings of enhanced ECM degradation such as cell migration, vascular remodeling, and atherosclerotic plaque rupture
