Evaluation of Social Media and Students Participation in Politics: A Study of Students in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka
The emergence of social media has made it quite easy for students to participate in political matters. However, it has been observed that most youths use social media to participate in politics in ways that promote political violence and tension in the country. It is on this basis that this work set out to examine, amongst others, the extent of usage of social media by the undergraduate students of UNN in politics. The Uses and Gratification theory was the theoretical framework of this study. The survey research design was adopted for the study and a total of 375 respondents served as the sample size of the study. Among other findings, the research discovered that the respondents are highly exposed to social media and that they use social media to a high extent to participate in politics. Hence, some of the following recommendations were proffered. Tertiary institutions must make it their responsibility to train and produce students that are conscious of their activities and actions in ways that promote peace and unity in the nation. This could be achieved by conducting periodic seminars before, during, and after elections to educate and enlighten the students on the dangers associated with the dysfunctional use of the social media in participating in politics. Students and the general public should self-regulate their use of social media in participating in politics. This can be achieved by asking themselves if the ways they use social media are ethical and for the general good of all
The Imperative Status of Science Reporting on Environmental Sustainability in Rivers State
Environmental sustainability and overall growth of Rivers State, a state that, over the years, has been plagued with oil spillage and redundant environmental growth. This study, amongst others, sought to ascertain the place of environmental reporting on environmental sustainability in Rivers State. The study was anchored on the contagion theories. The study adopted a quantitative research method, which was the survey research method using the data instrument of a questionnaire. The population of the study was Rivers State, Nigeria. The researcher purposefully and randomly selected three communities from the three senatorial zones/districts in the state, which are the River East, River South East, and the River West, which were Okrika local government and Ogu Community; Eleme local government and Alesa Community; Abua local government and Otari Community. From a population of approximately over 1,204,980, the researcher, using purposive and simple random sampling techniques, selected participants for the study, and the Wimmer and Dominick Sample Calculator arrived at a sample size of 384. It was revealed that the level of effectiveness of environmental reporting in creating awareness towards the practice of environmental sustainability in Rivers State is not really that paramount, as locals in the communities were of the view that these reportage strategies have yielded little or no results and were indecisive with regards to their potency towards driving the much-needed changes and proactive actions in the quest for environmental sustainability in the area. It recommended that promotion of environmental sustainability in Rivers State should not be an on-and-off practice but a regular and intensive lifestyle amongst the locals, government, and organisations operational in the areas
A perceptual study of Ozisa FM We the people program on the Unknown Gunmen issue in Owerri municipal
The risk associated with insecurity is alarming as such people need to be security conscious in order to stay safe. The aim of the study was to investigate the public perception of Ozisa FM We the people programme on the Unknown gunmen issue in Owerri municipal council. The study was framed around the agenda setting theory. The study adopted a survey research approach with the use of questionnaire as the instrument for data collection. The population is 171,102, of which 384 were derived using Survey Monkey's online sample size calculator. The non-proportionate quota sampling and purposive sampling approaches were used. The data was analysed using simple percentages. Results revealed that 47.4% of the respondents confirmed that they are exposed to Ozisa FM's We the People Programme on the issue of the Unknown Gunmen to a moderate extent. Findings also showed that 55.0% of the respondents had the perception that the We the people programme has been effective in joining hands with the authority to curtail the Unknown Gunmen's activities. It was concluded that audience are moderately exposed to the Ozisa FM We the people programme. Despite their level of exposure to the programme they still perceive it in a positive light, due to its role in helping curtail the menace of the Unknown gunmen in Owerri, Imo State. It was recommended that they need to sustain their efforts in joining hands with the appropriate stakeholders with the goal of ending the issue of the Unknown gunmen, especially in Imo State
Appraising the Effects of Social Media Information during the Electioneering Period in Nigeria
Information is very essential especially during election period that is why candidates and voters utilize it to spread information because of how viable it is in circulating information. The study sought amongst others to examine the effects; negative or positive of social media information circulation in an election period in Nigeria. It was anchored on the Mediatization of politics theory. The descriptive survey research design was used in this investigation. The residents of Owerri metropolis constitute the population of this study. The multistage sampling technique was used. Copies of questionnaire were given out to residents of Owerri Metropolis. The researchers purposefully selected two communities each from local government areas that make up the Owerri metropolis. It was revealed that many of the respondents with a mean average of 2.7 agrees that different social media outlet within their reach and beyond plays key roles in the journey of a smooth, people oriented and positive driven transition of power during and after elections ensuring that the country does not go haywire because of political differences. It was recommended that media role as an advocate of the people in the quest for peaceful pre and post-election period in Nigeria as such should transcend to personal social media users.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
