    No full text
The problem of recurring schedule delays and cost overruns has long been one of the biggest challenges in the management of construction projects. Recent technological developments in Digital Twin and Machine Learning technologies provide project managers with promising opportunities to monitor, forecast, and control projects before any potential issues become delayed and more costly. This study employs a systematic literature review and comparative analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of Machine Learning-enabled Digital Twins for early risk prediction in construction projects. Digital Twin technology and Machine Learning models in an early prediction and control of construction project schedules and costs to avoid any potential delays and overspends. A structured search process has been conducted using the VOSviewer tool to identify the 51 most highly qualified studies from a total of 813 search results through the use of the PRISMA guidelines. The findings indicate that there is a rapidly expanding amount of work after 2019 based on developments in data availability, Building Information Modeling (BIM), Internet of Things (IoT), and predictive analytics. Among the paradigms used by the studies surveyed, there are three major types of models used collectively: White Box models, Black Box models using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Random Forest, Support Vector Machines (SVM), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and Gray Box models using Digital Twins. White Box models have excellent explainability capabilities. However, black box models have stronger predictive capabilities than White Box models. Gray Box models are promising for achieving interpretability in AI models. Nevertheless, the gaps in the existing research are also recognized in the review, which include the lack of validation of the study on a real-scale project, the lack of application of deep learning in temporal project data, the dispersed nature of the Digital Twin platform, and the challenges associated with data privacy and interoperability. Opportunities for future research are identified in the development of a comprehensive framework for ML-DT, a portfolio-level Digital Twin, a real-time predictive control system, and a privacy-focused data architecture

Water quality is a critical determinant of public health, particularly in developing regions where anthropogenic activities are prevalent. This study evaluated the effects of water pollution on public health, focusing on Osinmo Reservoir in Ejigbo, Osun State, Nigeria. The primary objectives were to the sources of pollution, analyze the physico-chemical and heavy metal properties of the water, and compare findings against World Health Organization (WHO) standards. Water samples were collected monthly between January and March 2019 from two strategic locations: the Midstream (Station A) and the Spillway (Station B). Standard laboratory procedures were employed to analyze concentrations of Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), Iron (Fe), and selected physico-chemical parameters such as pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and temperature. Results showed that concentrations of lead, cadmium, and iron in both sampling stations exceeded the WHO permissible limits for drinking water. Turbidity and COD levels were also significantly above standard thresholds, indicating moderate to high pollution. Station B consistently recorded higher pollutant concentrations than Station A, suggesting increased exposure to anthropogenic contaminants such as agricultural runoff and improper waste disposal. Though pH and temperature were within acceptable ranges, the overall water quality was found unsuitable for direct human consumption. The study concludes that Osinmo Reservoir is adversely affected by pollution and poses significant health risks to surrounding communities. It recommends immediate intervention measures including wastewater treatment, strict regulation of agricultural activities, afforestation, and public awareness campaigns to mitigate further degradation and protect public health

    No full text
This study aimed to explore the lived experiences, challenges, and coping mechanisms of student-parents enrolled in a demanding technical program, specifically the Bachelor in Automotive Technology. A qualitative narrative research design was employed to capture in-depth personal accounts of how student-parents navigate the dual responsibilities of higher education and parenting. The study was conducted at the Mariano Marcos State University–College of Industrial Technology (MMSU–CIT), Philippines, during the academic year in which data collection took place. Using total enumeration, seven (7) student-parents who met the inclusion criteria participated in the study. Data were collected through semi-structured questionnaires administered either face-to-face or online and were analyzed using thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke’s six-phase framework. The findings revealed multiple, interrelated challenges faced by student-parents, including persistent financial strain, time scarcity, academic pressure, health sacrifices, reduced social interaction, and emotional stress arising from role conflict. Financial difficulties were marked by family-first budgeting and delayed academic payments, while rigid academic schedules intensified time-related stress and academic fatigue. Despite these challenges, participants demonstrated notable resilience through strengthened family bonds, emotional maturity, faith and spirituality, structured time management, and reliance on family and social support networks. The study concludes that student-parents in technical programs experience complex and compounded pressures that extend beyond academic demands alone. These findings underscore the need for higher education institutions to implement more inclusive and responsive support systems—such as flexible academic policies, targeted financial aid, and accessible counseling services—to promote student-parent well-being, retention, and academic success

    No full text
Background: The worldwide increase in dietary supplement consumption has raised concerns about these products’ safety and stability, particularly those consumed frequently, like fish oil supplements. Fish oil as a source of omega-3 fatty acids is among the most popular dietary supplements in the world, with predicted annual global sales of more than 1.6 billion US dollars in 2018. Aim: This experimental study was conducted with the aim of assessing selected fish oil supplements containing no antioxidants other than vitamin E or D in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) qualitatively and quantitatively, and investigating their oxidation trends. Research Design and Methods: Selected fish oil supplements in UAE pharmacies were studied and had their peroxide value (PV), para-anisidine value (para-AnV), total oxidation (TOTOX), and weight change measured. Other factors like vitamin E addition, price, omega-3 fatty acids labelled percentage, and expiration date were examined for their correlation to product oxidation. In this study, the oxidation status of 15 products from 13 brands imported from 8 countries was assessed. Results: More than half of the studied products exceeded the guideline values for oxidation in at least one parameter. Of those within the guideline values, 33% were in the limit range. TOTOX levels were inversely correlated with the expiration date (r=-0.50, p=0.041), but not with the recommended daily dose cost (r=-0.02, p=0.945).  Conclusions: The oxidation extent of several fish oil products did not meet the international oxidation criteria and correlated significantly with the studied factors. Further studies must address the limitations encountered in this study
