Islamic Finance System as a Catalyst for Sustainability in the Economy

    No full text
Springer International PublishingSustainable Development is a development model that can meet the needs of today's generations without sacrificing its ability to meet the needs of future generations. It has taken its place in the world's agenda toward the end of the twentieth century and int became a worldwide implementation plan with the international agreements signed in the 1990s. Today, the most serious problems faced by people are income injustice and increase in poverty. During the rapid change process that began in the 1980s, the problem of income distribution was no longer perceived as an ordinary economic problem, but as a political and social problem. Economic and social policies implemented since the 1950s have not been able to solve the problems and have made many problems more apparent. In short, in today's world, an unbalanced structure has emerged, where financial prosperity is increasing and social welfare is gradually diminishing. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Exploring the Symbiotic Link: Co-Integration Analysis of the Egyptian Stock Exchange and International Equity Markets

The present study addresses the limited discussion on the equity market in the Middle East and North African region (MENA) concerning the spill-over effects from international equity markets. By employing time series techniques, we examine the integration and causality of interdependencies among five major stock exchange markets worldwide: USA, UK, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Japan, along with their relationship with the Egypt Stock Exchange market. Spanning from March 1998 to January 2018, our study uniquely considers the interaction between developed and developing countries. Our co-integration findings reveal the limitations of international diversification for investors with long holding periods. We highlight the importance of seeking non-co-integrated markets, such as Malaysia and Hong Kong, which were found to be insignificant in this study, for investors aiming to diversify their portfolios and explore interesting long and short-term investment opportunities

The Role of Islamic and Conventional Microfinance in Tackling Financial Exclusion in Bangladesh, Nigeria, and Uganda

There has been to pertinent study considering the growth of Islamic and conventional microfinance institutions as an antecedent of financial inclusion in Bangladesh, Nigeria, and Uganda in a single study. Adults who are financially excluded make up sizable numbers in Bangladesh, Nigeria, and Uganda, the three OIC countries. Financial exclusion has been addressed through the establishment of microfinance institutions. This study attempts to review the contribution of Islamic and conventional microfinance institutions established in these countries in tackling financial exclusion. The study used the data from the Global Findex Database of the World Bank and IMF Financial Access Survey to draw a comparative image of financial access among the countries. The evidence indicated that there are significant financial gaps across the countries and hence a huge opportunity for Islamic microfinance with its vast range of financial products could be implemented to spur economic growth and tackle financial exclusion. Policymakers can use the study's findings to entice and build new microfinance institutions with broadly inclusive products for all populations of these countries

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Islamic structured products are essentially Shariah-compliant structured products. They bear similarities to conventional products in terms of purpose, economic benefits and basic structural features. The difference being that Islamic structured products adhere to Shariah principles by avoiding riba (usury), gharar (uncertainty), zulm (injustice), and operate holistically in a Shariah-compliant manner. This includes utilizing Shariah contracts approved by the Shariah Advisory Council of the Central Bank of Malaysia to structure the investment and contains underlying assets that are permissible by Shariah. Despite having been introduced into the industry since its establishment, implementing Islamic structured products have many Shariah issues. Using in-depth analyses of both the literature and several case studies for structured products in Islamic banks in Malaysia, this paper analyzes and assesses the most important Shariah issues surrounding Islamic structured products in Malaysia. Our findings confirm that the current implementation of Malaysian structured products continues to possess a number of Shariah issues, which need to be corrected by both the banks and the industry in order to have fully Shariah-compliant structured products to be operational in the market.

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
