Transgenerationale Schuld in Nora Krugs graphic novel Heimat
In the graphic novel Heimat. Ein deutsches Familienalbum (2018), the German author Nora Krug documents the analysis of her family’s history. As a member of the third generation after the Holocaust, Krug wants to find out if and in which way her grandparents were involved in the Holocaust. In addition, her research shows whether her own family’s history corresponds to Germany’s cultural history. Krug seeks to improve her understanding of her family’s relations and her ‘Heimat’. The archive is the starting point of her investigations and defines the design of the story. Heimat connects information from the archives with testimonies and memorabilia. In this fashion, Krug creates a creative treatment of the family history. Not only the archive, but also photography is significant in the design of the graphic novel. Hirsch’ theory on postmemory explains the self-representation of the family in photographs. Krugs plurimedial design of the story creates a multilayered narrative that processes the complex themes of Heimat in a sensible way
Abstract Interpretation of Program Transformations using Regular Tree Grammars
Many program transformation languages simplify the implementation of program transformations. However, they give only weak static guarantees about the generated code such as well-sortedness. Well-sortedness guarantees that a program transformation does not generate syntactically ill-formed code, but it is too imprecise for many other scenarios. In this paper, we present a static analysis that allows developers of program transformations to reason about their transformations on a more fine-grained level, namely that of syntactic shape. Specifically, we present an abstract interpreter for the Stratego program transformation language that approximates the syntactic shape of transformed code using regular tree grammars. As a baseline, we also present an abstract interpreter that guarantees well-sortedness. We prove parts of both abstract interpreters sound.Computer Science | Software Technolog
Estimating new reservoir locations with the use of a hydrological model for small holder cotton farmers in Maharashtra, India
For cotton cultivation, large amounts of water are necessary. One of the countries facing water challenges related to cotton cultivation is India. India experiences a monsoon weather pattern causing large amount of rain from June to October and no rain during the other months. One of the challenges India’s small holder cot- ton farmers face is the lack of water after the monsoon. A solution to this problem could be the construction of (small) reservoir structures and renovation of currently present structures. One of the main questions arising here is ‘how can a hydrological model estimate new reservoir locations for small holder cotton farmers and what is the potential of these new structures and current structures in Maharashtra India with Ghatanji block and Hinganghat block as case study areas?’. Estimating potential reservoir locations as well as determining which current reservoir structures have the potential to be renewed could increase the water availability for small holder cotton farmers in Maharashtra, India.Four focus areas are chosen, these areas are Yavatmal, Nagpur, Wardha and Amravati. Within these fo- cus areas, Ghatanji block and Hinganghat block are used as case study areas for developing and validating different models used for analysing current and suitable potential locations.Remote data based tools used to locate, validate and analyse the potential of current and potential suitable structures are QSWAT (hydrological model), Google Earth Engine (land cover analysis), Python coding, Zoom.Earth (locating current structures), socio-hydrological model (yield and benefit analysis).Out of the initial 692 potential locations, 315 locations in Ghatanji block and 349 locations in Hinganghat block are classified as suitable potential reservoir locations. A location was marked suitable if a minimum size (200m3) reservoir on this position has the ability to fill up completely at least once a year for an average monsoon season. Additionally, the structure was positioned in a location with more than 30% crop coverage and less than 25% urban coverage. Out of a total of 2212 current structures, 840 locations in Hinganghat and 970 locations in Ghatanji have a high potential of collecting water if renovated and in use. This high potential is a result of small distance to the nearest stream and suitable land cover on the position of the reservoir. Existing structures were classified as suitable if they adhere the same prerequisites as stated above regarding the coverage and for the additional requirement that a structure should be located less than 200 meters from the nearest stream point. The results of this investigation show that a hydrological model can estimate new potential reservoir locations and that the use of a hydrological model is beneficial for locating these potential locations when com- pared to current or recently constructed locations. The benefit of using a hydrological model is that it can identify the surface runoff paths of water during and after a precipitation event. Furthermore, can remote data based tools help in identifying the suitability of both potential as well as current structures.https://github.com/Jente77/Hydrological_model Github with all codesWater Efficiency in Sustainable Cotton-based Production Systems in Maharashtra, Indi
Oppvekstskildringene inviterer slik mer allment til identifikasjon utover at de på forskjellige måter som litteratur tilbyr ulike estetiske erfaringer.“Portraits of growing up in the age of performative biography” examines the literary representation of the growing up experiences of three girls aged 17, 16 and 15, as they are depicted in respectively Annie Ernaux’s Sommeren 58, Linn Ullmann’s Jente 1983 and Vigdis Hjorth’s Femten år. The literary presentation of the work of remembering and its challenges is central both to the narrative and the narrative techniques in the texts, as is the reflection on protagonist’s actions as they appear in the mature narrator’s retrospect. I have focused on how the genre determination of the three texts, a memoir and two novels, places them in the auto-fictional tradition. The analysis draws on Gerard Genette’s narratology to identify form features and the text's aesthetic communication. I have looked at how the three works, in the capacity of being “close to reality”, as the work and the author are closely connected, explore the boundaries between reality and fiction, and the extent to which the performative biography draws on the reader’s knowledge. By means of a comparison in the light of respectively a thematic, aesthetic, or biographical reader’s approach to the three works, one can see how the genre processing can open a nuanced representation of both subjective and collective growing up experiences. The descriptions of growing up thus invite identification more generally, beyond the fact that they offer different aesthetic experiences in different ways as literary fictions
Girls preferred? Changing patterns of gender preferences in the two German states
Parental preferences for the sex of children are a prominent subject of study in some Asian and African countries where sex-selective behavior has led to skewed sex-ratios. In Europe or North-America, by contrast, cross-sectional data does not reveal any clear pattern of sex-preferences. However, this does not mean that people are indifferent to the sex of their children. Taking a longitudinal perspective, this paper shows how sex-preferences in Germany have changed over time and in response to changes in welfare regime. Based on German cohort data, event-history models reveal a significant boy-preference among women born before 1910 during the German Reich. After the world war II, women in West-Germany never developed a clear sex-preference, but cohorts born in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) show a significant preference for girls. This pattern is absorbed by the pro-family policy that was launched by the socialist regime during the seventies. In conclusion, the paper argues that the process of modernization does not neutralize sex-preferences as is often assumed. Rather, it may give rise to diverging sex-preferences depending on the specific type of welfare regime. (AUTHOR)
Agricultural technology adoption by rural farmers in Malawi: A case study of a Small Enterprise in Malawi
The implementation of new agricultural technologies is considered a key component of Malawi’s agricul- tural development strategy. However, successful technology adoption has proven to be difficult, affecting both farmers and small businesses introducing the technology. With a primary focus on farmers interested in adopting the technology, common factors influencing farmers’ adoption habits are determined by con- ducting interviews and observations. Survey results indicate that from a farmers perspective; market ac- cess, information access, education, and affordability are key factors helping facilitate adoption, while lack of these factors hinder adoption. Insight into these factors could provide business knowledge on how to better facilitate technology adoption. For this purpose, literature factors affecting a SME’s success are compared with an active agricultural technology company. These factors include experience, communication, man- agement and technology performance. Using both farmers needs and business developmental factors, this study hopes to provide insights for new companies starting a business in a developing country.Multidiciplinairy projec
Bringing Manufacturing into the MDO domain using MBSE
Most MDO problems currently do not include manufacturing as an optimization domain. Within the H2020 project AGILE 4.0 the intent is to bring manufacturing into the MDO domain using MBSE techniques developed within the project. To demonstrate how manufacturing can be brought into the MDO domain application cases are set up that resemble MDO problems from industry. In this paper, the MDO techniques will be used for the design of a Flap for a regional jet. The manufacturing aspect is represented by including the manufacturing cost of the flap in a Design Of Experiments (DOE). In this DOE different flap kinematic mechanisms and different flap sizes and paths are explored. The DOE is set up using the MDO toolset developed within AGILE 4.0. It allows for an automatic definition of the DOE workflow. The DOE results show that the choice of flap configuration has a significant effect on the Flap manufacturing cost, the flap wright and the landing performance of the aircraft. Next steps will be to investigate more flap configurations, improved the manufacturing cost model used and to set up a true flap optimization.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Flight Performance and PropulsionAerospace Structures & Computational Mechanic
Palimpsest of persecution: overcoming anti-semitism in Olga Tokarchuk's "Books of Jacob"
U fokusu rada nalazi se ispitivanje socio-političkog statusa Jevreja u romanu Olge Tokarčuk "Knjige Jakovlјeve". Olga Tokarčuk, svedočeći o marginama u ovom obimnom, palimpsestnom romanu, sprovodi svojevrsnu strategiju prevladavanja antisemitizma. The focus of the paper is on examining the socio-political status of Jews in Olga Tokarchuk's novel Books of Jacob. Jacob's sect, following the Sabbath teaching, hybridizes the Jewish and Christian traditions, but also the pagan, polyamorous approach to sexuality. The marginalization of Jacob's followers is viewed in two ways: through religious apostasy from traditional Judaism, but also through a union with Christians that have never been fully accepted. The theoretical approach to the problem is inseparable from the Jungian archetype of the mother embodied in the figure of Jenta, the “one-who-sees-everything”, and Foucault's “Order of discourse”, which provides the interpretation of the extinction of Jacobites through the theatricalization of trials and the deconstruction of binary oppositions, which necessarily leads this research into the domains of gynocriticism or queer research. By formally placing a man in the center of her novel, after whom it is named, the author places a woman, Jenta, in the outer margins of the work. She represents the essential support for the Jacobites - both emotional, for life, and mythical, after death. Olga Tokarchuk, testifying about the margins in this extensive, palimpsestic novel, pursues a kind of strategy of overcoming anti-Semitism.Izdavanje ovog zbornika podržalo je Ministarstvo prosvete, nauke i tehnološkog razvoja Republike Srbije
