Artist Bio: Leila Abdelrazaq is a Palestinian author/artist, who was born in Chicago. Her work combines art and activism, addressing topics such as diaspora, refugees, history, memory, and borders. In 2015, she graduated from DePaul University with a BFA in Theatre and BA in Arabic Studies. She is best known for her graphic novel Baddawi (April 2015)- a story about her father’s refugee experience. Her website (https://lalaleila.com) also contains comics and zines, illustrations, and prints she’s created based on self- expression and her love of activism. Leila is also the founder of a blog called Bigmouth Press and Comix, which creates a platform for women and others of African, Middle East, Muslim, and South Asian (AMMS) decent to attack issue, such as imperialism, gender, sexuality, etc., through their artwork

Este artigo apresenta uma tradução nossa, feita do árabe ao português, do conto Naḍra lahā ’aṣābi‘, “Os dedos do olhar”, da escritora kuaitiana Leila Othman. Ao início, acrescentamos uma breve apresentação da autora e do conto, além de comentários sobre decisões tradutórias referentes a características que criam a atmosfera de suspense e estranhamento.This article consists of a translation, from Arabic to Portuguese, of the short story Naḍra lahā ’aṣābi‘ (“The fingers of the gaze”) by Kuwaiti author Leila Othman. At the beginning, a brief presentation of both the author and the short story was added, as well as comments on translational decisions regarding characteristics which create the atmosphere of suspense and strangeness
Nilai Kebangsaan pada Karya-Karya Leila S. Chudori
In literary studies, novels carry various ideological values, such as national ideology. Empirical evidence shows that national ideologies can influence and shape regimes nationally and internationally. One of the manifestations of national ideology can be actualized in literary works such as novels and short stories. This research aims to examine the value of nationality in the works of Leila S. Chudori by using the hermeneutic method formulated by Paul Ricoeur. This research is descriptive qualitative research, and the data used are Leila S. Chudori's works, namely 2 novels and 2 short story collections. Meanwhile, data analysis techniques are carried out in three basic stages of hermeneutics formulated by Ricoeur (1975): understanding, discussion, and interpretation. The results show that Leila S. Chudori's works have succeeded in entering the deepest aspects of national values, including psychological, sociological, and historical aspects. The narration in the plot, characters, and themes in Leila S. Chudori's works are able to articulate national values through the characters presented by the author. The narration is related to the memory of Indonesia, love for Indonesia, pride in Indonesia, and Indonesian identity
Gaya Penceritaan Leila S. Chudori dalam Novel Laut Bercerita
The purpose of this research is to examine the narrative style of Leila S. Chudori in the novel Laut Bercerita. The research employs a qualitative method with a stylistic approach. Data collection techniques used include literature review. The data analysis technique in this study involves: (1) collecting references that can serve as a basis for the research; (2) reading and understanding the novel Laut Bercerita by Leila S. Chudori, as well as creating a synopsis of the novel; (3) gathering data related to the narrative style of Leila S. Chudori in her work; (4) categorizing the data that pertains to the narrative style; (5) identifying the collected data and analyzing the narrative style of Leila S. Chudori in her work; and (6) drawing conclusions. The research findings indicate that the narrative style in the novel Laut Bercerita by Leila S. Chudori is characterized by the use of the first-person point of view with two main characters from different generations. The author employs various language styles such as personification, sarcasm, hyperbole, simile, and metaphor for comparison and satire. Character portrayal is carried out through analytical and dramatic techniques. The setting of the novel includes (a) place; (b) time; (c) atmosphere. From this, it is evident that Leila S. Chudori's narrative style in Laut Bercerita combines history and fiction with distinctive features of a bold narrative style that includes humor, sarcasm, vulgar (frontal) language, presents the realities of the time, and tends to be critical of the government, serving as a social and political critique.Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui gaya penceritaan Leila S. Chudori dalam novel Laut Bercerita. Metode penelitian yang digunakan yaitu metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan stilistika. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan yaitu teknik pustaka. Teknik analisis data dalam penelitian ini yaitu; (1) mengumpulkan referensi yang bisa menjadi acuan dalam penelitian; (2) membaca dan memahami novel Laut Bercerita karya Leila S. Chudori, serta membuat sinopsis novel; (3) mengumpulkan data-data yang merujuk pada gaya penceritaan Leila S. Chudori dalam karyanya; (4) mengelompokkan data-data yang merujuk pada gaya penceritaan; (5) mengidentifikasi data yang didapat, serta menganalisis gaya penceritaan Leila S. Chudori dalam karyanya; (6) menarik kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa gaya bercerita dalam novel Laut Bercerita karya Leila S. Chudori memiliki ciri khas utama: penggunaan sudut pandang orang pertama dengan dua tokoh utama berbeda secara bergenerasi. Penulis menggunakan berbagai gaya bahasa seperti personifikasi, sarkasme, hiperbola, simile, dan metafora untuk membandingkan dan menyindir. Penggambaran karakter dilakukan dengan teknik analitik dan dramatik. Latar novel ini meliputi; (a) tempat; (b) waktu; (c) suasana; dari hal ini tampak bahwa gaya penceritaan Leila S. Chudori dalam novel Laut Bercerita menggabungkan sejarah dan fiksi dengan ciri khas gaya penceritaan yang berani, humor, sarkas, vulgar (frontal), menghadirkan realita zaman serta cenderung kontra kepada pemerintah, dan bersifat kritik sosial politik

Thursday, February 23, 2017 Prince Alwaleed Hall, Room P071, AUC New Cairo Distinguished Visiting Creative Writer Leila Aboulela will deliver a talk titled Through the Eyes of Others -Developing Empathy by Reading Fiction. Leila Aboulela is a Sudanese-Egyptian novelist whose work, written in English, has received critical acclaim and a high profile for its distinctive exploration of identity, migration and Islamic spirituality. Early in her career, Leila won the Caine Prize for African Writing. She is the author of four novels, The Kindness of Enemies, The Translator (a New York Times 100 Notable Books of the Year), Minaret and Lyrics Alley (Fiction Winner of the Scottish Book Awards). Her collection of short stories, Coloured Lights, was shortlisted for the MacMillan Silver PEN Award and several of her plays were broadcast by BBC Radio. Focusing on a discursive and narrative analysis, the author of the chapter unravels how linguistic exile becomes for Franco-Algerian writing a creative element in which the hybridity of languages creates a feminine writing of silence and identity wounds to the time that allows a postcolonial approach to history.Ce chapitre met l’accent sur la déchirure linguistique: l’écriture de l’entre-deux, particulièrement visible dans “Je ne parle pas la langue de mon père” de Leila Sebbar.
