The reception of Vatican II in the People of God : testimony on the renewal from life forms

"Factors Which Affect Mining of the Lower Mississippian Coals in Montgomery County, Virginia" ie a study ot the Merrimac and Langhorne seams of the Price formation in Montgomery County, Virginia. The main reference used in the review of literature was Bulletin XXV of the Virginia Geolog1cal Survey by Marius R. Campbell. The review of literature discusses geologic formations and structure and the coal as seen in various prospect and mine openinga by Campbell. The author visited mines during the field investigation and analyzed samples of coal collected at the mines. He discusses past mining operations in Montgomery County and has traced all available mine maps of past mining operations. These are filed as part of the thesis. Core drillings were also investigated by the author and reported depths of the coal in the Blacksburg syncline ere entered in Table III and Figure I. An investigation was also made into mining methods used in Montgomery County including a discussion of explosive gases encountered in mining the Merrimac seam. The author discusses the results of the investigation in the conclusions. Be ia convinced the coals of the Valley fields, although of poor quality, will becane increasingly valuable as anthracite deposit in Pennsylvania and bituminous deposits in Southern West Virginia and southwest Virginia are depleted.Master of Scienc

    No full text
The aim of this presentation is to revise Ignacio Ellacuría’s theological legacy about «the poor» and to suggest some key biblical and theological elements to relaunch it from a feminist perspective. Framed within its historic soteriology, the author’s thought is recovered in terms of its fundamental distinction between the poor from a socio-economical viewpoint and the poor «with spirit», its relation to the message of the beatitudes, and its current ecclesiastical relevance. With a feminist relaunching of Ellacuría’s contributions in mind, we examine the biblical studies of some authors, like Elsa Tamez’s work about Hagar (cf. Gen. 16 and 21:8-21) and Ivoni Richter Reimer’s work about Elizabeth and Mary (cf. Luke 1:24-25 and 1:39-56). The relation among these texts resides in the fact that these women—due to their condition as such—suffer poverty, oppression and humiliation, and are freed, blessed and exalted by God’s action. In these texts, we can see the lives of women marked by a weave of oppression and a transformative spirituality. The Magnificat, the song of a woman who has been humiliated and exalted, undoubtedly sums up the poverty «with spirit» that anticipates the coming of the Kingdom of God. In the final thoughts, a rethinking of «the poor» from an intersectional theological perspective is put forward to show the interweaving among gender, class, race and sexual oppressions. The use of this approach enables us to broaden the theological understanding of the poor and presents a challenge to language in inclusive terms. In turn, all of this promotes the visibility of the grid of oppression that women suffer and facilitates the recognition of their action in processes of resistance, liberation and «spiritualization».Esta presentación se propone revisitar el legado teológico de Ignacio Ellacuría sobre «los pobres» y sugerir algunas claves bíblico-teológicas para su relanzamiento feminista.

A determination of the acceleration due to gravity at Blacksburg, Virginia

    No full text
The purpose of the project herein described was to determine the acceleration due to gravity for the locale of Blacksburg, Virginia., to five significant figures. As far as the author has been able to determine, there has never been a formal determination of “g” made for this area. Supporting this prime purpose was the fact that the equipment required for this experiment, i .e. a secondary standard of length, a recording system, and several portable photocell relay circuits, and the vacuum tank, would be useful to the department in the future.Master of Scienc

Short- and Long-Term Effects of Commercially Available Gold Nanoparticles in Rodents

    No full text
Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) are currently being intensely investigated for their potential use in biomedical applications. Nanotoxicity studies are urgently needed to validate their safety in clinical practice. The objective of this research was to assess the acute, subacute, and chronic effects of a single intravenous exposure to commercially available GNPs in two in vivo models, mice and rats. Gold nanoparticles were purchased and independently characterized. Animals were exposed to either 1000 mg GNPs/kg body weight (GNP group) or an equivalent volume of phosphate buffered saline (PBS group) intravenously via the tail vein. Subsets of animals were euthanized 1, 7, 14, 21, 28 days (female BALB/c mice and female F344 rats) or 20 weeks (female and male C57BL/6 mice) post-exposure and samples were collected for biochemistry, histopathology, electron microscopy, and atomic absorption spectrometry analysis. Independent characterization demonstrated that the physicochemical properties of the purchased GNPs were in good agreement with the information provided by the supplier. Important differences in GNP-induced immune responses were identified when comparing mice and rats 1 to 28 days post-exposure. Gold nanoparticles stimulated the formation of liver microgranulomas in mice, along with transiently increased serum levels of the proinflammatory cytokine interleukin-18. No such alterations were found in rats. Species differences in GNP biodistribution and excretion were also detected, with higher relative accumulation of GNPs in spleen and longer fecal excretion in rats. In the long-term (20 weeks after dosing), exposure to GNPs incited chronic inflammation in mice, characterized by the persistence of microgranulomas in liver, spleen, and lymph nodes, as well as further increased serum levels of interleukin-18. Impairment of body weight gain was also observed in the GNP-exposed group. No sex differences were detected. In conclusion, GNPs are not innocuous and have the ability to incite a robust macrophage response in mice. However, considering the mildness of the toxic effects identified despite the high dose selected for the study, GNPs continue to have great potential for biomedical uses. Further studies are needed in order to determine specific mechanisms of toxicity and the role of chronic inflammation in the development of adverse effects after co- or post-exposures.Ph. D
