    Tools from statistical physics for systems biology and for genomics

    My graduate studies involved three broad classes of problems, each of which are presented in different chapters of this thesis. The first two parts of my work were related to studying dynamics of biochemical networks. I studied a mean-field/stochastic model of epigenetic chromatin silencing in yeast. The model gives rise to different dynamical behaviors possible within the same molecular model and provides qualitative predictions that are being investigated experimentally. In another part of my work, I studied a model of segment polarity network in Drosophila and analyzed the parameter space of the system. I particularly studied the relation between the geometry of parameter space and the robustness of the network. I will show that, in addition to the volume, the geometry of this region has important consequences for the robustness and the fragility of a network. A major part of my PhD work involved applications of high-throughput sequencing technologies for extracting information at the genomic level. I present SOPRA, a new algorithm for exploiting the mate pair information for assembly of short reads. I have successfully applied SOPRA to real data and were able to assemble scaffolds of significant length with very few errors introduced in the process.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesIncludes vitaby Adel Dayaria

    La presente investigación busca alternativas de solución ante las oportunidades encontradas en la distribuidora de consumo masivo Adel & S SRL, en la ciudad de Huaral, conformado por un equipo de trabajo que desarrolla acciones en la gestión administrativa afectando así el desempeño laboral de los colaboradores. Ante lo expuesto, se fijó el objetivo principal: Determinar el nivel de influencia que tiene una adecuada gestión administrativa en el desempeño laboral de los colaboradores de la distribuidora de consumo masivo Adel & S SRL, en la ciudad de Huaral en el año 2020. Asimismo, se estableció la hipótesis principal: La gestión administrativa se relaciona significativamente con el desempeño laboral de los colaboradores de la distribuidora de consumo masivo Adel & S SRL, en la ciudad de Huaral en el año 2020. El tipo de investigación es aplicada considerando el método hipotético deductivo, con respecto al diseño específico no experimental, transversal, descriptivo y correlacional. La población está conformada por 20 colaboradores que laboran en las diferentes áreas de la distribuidora de consumo masivo, obteniendo como muestra 10 colaboradores elegidos al azar considerando el método probabilístico.     Data-driven design of fault diagnosis systems: nonlinear multimode processes

    In many industrial applications early detection and diagnosis of abnormal behavior of the plant is of great importance. During the last decades, the complexity of process plants has been drastically increased, which imposes great challenges in development of model-based monitoring approaches and it sometimes becomes unrealistic for modern large-scale processes. The main objective of Adel Haghani Abandan Sari is to study efficient fault diagnosis techniques for complex industrial systems using process historical data and considering the nonlinear behavior of the process. To this end, different methods are presented to solve the fault diagnosis problem based on the overall behavior of the process and its dynamics. Moreover, a novel technique is proposed for fault isolation and determination of the root-cause of the faults in the system, based on the fault impacts on the process measurements.     Strategic HRM and organisational performance: an empirical examination of the relationship between HPWS and customer satisfaction in Oman

    This thesis was submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University LondonAt present, high-performance work systems (HPWSs) are widely believed to be a potential source of sustainable competitive advantage for organisations. However, although there is sufficient evidence to indicate the positive relationship between the HPWS and organisational performance, it remains unclear precisely how such a system affects organisational performance. Accordingly, there have been calls in the literature to access the level of individual employees in order to examine this relationship through their perspectives and perceptions regarding HPWSs because, at the end of the day, their experiences and interactions with such systems are what determine their subsequent attitudes and behaviours, which ultimately affect customer satisfaction and enhance the service climate in the organisation or vice versa. The current study, which is funded by the Shura Council*, aims to fill this gap by empirically examining the effects of the HPWS, employee outcomes (measured in terms of job satisfaction, commitment, trust, motivation and intention to remain) and service climate on customer satisfaction in the Omani public sector. This study contributes to our understanding of the ‘black box’: the mechanism by which perceptions of an HPWS affects customer satisfaction. The study examines the direct effects of employee outcomes and service climate on customer satisfaction as well their mediating effects on the relationship between the HPWS and customer satisfaction. Furthermore, this study explores the moderating effect of agencification on the HPWS-customer satisfaction link. In so doing, it not only provides insight into how the HPWS affects customer satisfaction through its direct and indirect impacts on employee attitudes and behaviours as well as service climate but also contributes to the literature of the two fields of strategic human resources management and new public management (NPM). Using a sample of 521 professionals in 15 government entities in the public sector in Oman, a partial mediation model was identified and tested using structural equation modelling. The study results indicate that an HPWS has significant positive relationships with employee outcomes and service climate. The findings also reveal that both employee outcomes and service climate partially mediate the relationship between the HPWS and customer satisfaction. Furthermore, the employee outcomes were found to have both direct and indirect effects on customer satisfaction via the service climate. Therefore, the study findings suggest that public-sector officials should seek to adopt and invest in HPWSs to enhance positive employee attitudes and behaviours and to cultivate a favourable service climate that will ultimately enhance the level of customer satisfaction. On the other hand, the results of this research did not support NPM’s claim that agencification is an effective way to render public bureaucratic institutions more effective in achieving customer satisfaction. The study, therefore, raises concerns about the persistence of many international organisations, such as the World Bank and IMF, in calling on governments to implement this trend, particularly in developing countries.Shura Counci

    در متون مدیریت، از دو دسته فن تصمیم گیری تحت عنوان، فنون نرم و سخت یاد شده است. یکی از محورهای جدید در تحقیقات علم مدیریت، بررسی توان هر یک از فنون در مقایسه با همدیگر است. طرفداران فنون سخت تصمیم گیری معتقدند که این دسته از فنون از توان بیشتری نسبت به فنون نرم برخوردارند ولی طرفداران فنون نرم این ادعا را رد می کنند. در این مقاله از بین فنون سخت تصمیم گیری، فن تحلیل پوششی داده ها و از بین فنون نرم تصمیم گیری، فن فرایند تحلیل سلسله مراتبی انتخاب شده است و توان آنها در یک مطالعه میدانی با همدیگر مقایسه شده است. فنون DEA و AHP هر یک از فنون جدید و مهم تصمیم گیری می باشند که دارای کاربردهای فراوانی در علم مدیریت می باشند. در این تحقیق توان این دو فن در سنجش کارائی سازمانی با همدیگر مقایسه شده است. نتایج تحقیق نشان می دهد که اگر چه هر دو فن به نتیجه مشابه می انجامد ولی توان AHP از  DEA بیشتر است

    Drone Deep Reinforcement Learning: A Review

    Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly being used in many challenging and diversified applications. These applications belong to the civilian and the military fields. To name a few; infrastructure inspection, traffic patrolling, remote sensing, mapping, surveillance, rescuing humans and animals, environment monitoring, and Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) operations. However, the use of UAVs in these applications needs a substantial level of autonomy. In other words, UAVs should have the ability to accomplish planned missions in unexpected situations without requiring human intervention. To ensure this level of autonomy, many artificial intelligence algorithms were designed. These algorithms targeted the guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) of UAVs. In this paper, we described the state of the art of one subset of these algorithms: the deep reinforcement learning (DRL) techniques. We made a detailed description of them, and we deduced the current limitations in this area. We noted that most of these DRL methods were designed to ensure stable and smooth UAV navigation by training computer-simulated environments. We realized that further research efforts are needed to address the challenges that restrain their deployment in real-life scenarios

    Validation and cross‐cultural adaptation of the Arabic version of the Ear Outcome Survey‐16 (EOS‐16)

    Abstract Background The Ear Outcome Survey‐16 (EOS‐16) has been validated according to the health‐related quality of life (HRQol) survey guidelines. It has important compatible aspects in evaluating patients with chronic otitis media (COM) suitable for consultation. This study aimed to develop and standardize the Arabic version of the EOS‐16 to be used by clinicians in the Arab world while maintaining the conceptual equivalence. Methods A prospective cross‐sectional study was conducted in Damascus between July 2023 and November 2023 to develop an Arabic version of the EOS‐16. The translation was produced according to the cross‐cultural adaptation guidelines. Both experts' and participants' opinions as regards face validity were obtained in this study. Internal consistency was evaluated by the Cronbach alpha coefficient. Test–retest reliability was assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Pearson correlation. Results A total of 81 patients enrolled in the study, with an average age of 34.75 years and a standard deviation of 11.84 years with a sex ratio of 0.62 for females. All had inactive mucosal COM (dry perforation). The overall score of the EOS‐16 survey was 31.72 with a standard deviation of 13.42 suggesting bothering and influencing symptoms in COM patient's daily life. Excellent internal consistency was noted (Cronbach α = .89). Robust correlation was found between test–retest overall scores (r = .90). Reallocation of the items of the EOS‐16 improved the internal consistency of the subdivisions in COM patients. Conclusion The Arabic version of the EOS‐16 is a simple, clear, reliable, reproducible, and valid HRQoL survey. It is a useful and important instrument that helps physicians in making decisions regarding the patient's treatment and follow‐up

    A hybrid mathematical model for 360-degree performance appraisal; (Case study: National Iranian Productivity Organization)

    Initially, Performance appraisal process was just carried out by the executive managers, but recently it has evolved into an evaluation process based on the opinion of different reviewers including: supervisors, collaborators, customers (subordinates) and the employees themselves (360-degree method). Therefore, it seems necessary to develop a unified model in which subjective assessments are weighted and aggregated based on different appraisal resources. So, the main purpose of this paper is to determine the criteria and to present the 360-degree appraisal mathematical model of the national productivity organization of Iran based on de Andrés et al. (2010). This paper is also designed to answer the following questions: 1) what is the type of 360-degree appraisal mathematical model? And 2) is there a significant difference between performance evaluation criteria of different organizational levels of national productivity organization of Iran? To answer stated questions, first the performance appraisal criteria are derived from the literature and are classified into four major categories composed of technical skills, human skills, conceptual skills (Katz’s classification) & individual characteristics,. Then, fuzzy AHP technique is utilized to calculate the importance of each appraisal criterion and each evaluation resource. Finally, personnel’s performance score is calculated on three scenarios through the aggregation mathematical model (using 816 models).The findings of this study indicate that the 360-degree appraisal mathematical model is a linear programming (LP) model.
