    Increased Consumerism in a Networked-Nigeria: A Study on the Effect of E-Malls and Social Media on Youth Spending

    This research focuses on identifying how electronic shopping malls and their adverts on social networking sites might be affecting consumer spending with particular reference to Nigerian youths. The study made use of the quantitative methodology - 1,600 questionnaires were distributed and 1,349 were considered suitable for use in this study after discarding damaged or incorrectly filled questionnaires. This study adopted a multi-disciplinary approach when selecting the relevant theories to serve as the backdrop for the study; shopping preference theory and technological determinism were used as the theoretical background to the thesis. At the end of this study it was proven that there is indeed a relationship between online shopping malls and youth spending patterns. It was proven that exposure to social media and online shopping malls via social media has increased spending among Nigerian youths

    This paper takes a critical look at ethical issues in citizen journalism. Citizen journalism for the purpose of this research was limited to blogging sites and other independent sot news online news outlets. This paper tries to identify some ethical flaws or problems plaguing online journalism today using Nigeria as a case study. To achieve this, a comparative analysis between professional newspapers (online) and blogs were carried out. Two blogs and two professional online news sites were analysed. The findings of this research confirmed the predominance of unethical reporting in blogs as compared to the professional one. It was also found out that despite these unethical practices, a lot of people still visit these sites for their news information. The content analysis was carried out by calculating the frequency of some predetermined unethical practices in the reporting of news in the selected websites. To put this research in perspective, Gatekeeping Theory and Networked Gatekeeping Theory were briefly examined. It is the hope of this research to contribute a little insight into the growth of online journalism, the relevance of Gatekeeping theory to modern day news reporting practices and some ethical issues currently plaguing this medium

    This article focuses on understanding the strategic role Public Relations (PR) plays in positioning NGOs and helping them achieve their set out objectives in Libya- Post-Civil war era. The researchers analyzed two Non-Profit Organizations (NGOs) that operate in Libya - Bokra and Attawasul. NGOs like any other organization have publics they need to communicate and appeal to and as such it goes without saying that they channel their communication messages in such a way that their message is clear and resonates soundly with their intended audiences. This is even more pertinent in a country like Libya. Public Relations ensures that organizations are favorably looked upon by their publics by communicating in the right way. This study was premised on the Social Marketing Theory and dealt with understanding Public Relations and how it is used by NGOs in Libya. Based on the findings of this study, it was determined that Public Relations especially through social media, indeed plays a significant role in the process of getting donors and volunteers for NGOs in Libya. To arrive at this conclusion, questionnaires were distributed to staff and volunteers of the organizations under study and interviews were also conducted with top management staff of both organizations.Este artículo se centra en el estudio del rol estratégico que juegan las Relaciones Públicas (RP) en el posicionamiento de las ONG y en cómo les ayuda a conseguir los objetivos que se trazan en la Libia post guerra civil. Los investigadores analizaron dos organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro que operan en Libia –Bokra y Attawasul. Las ONG, cómo cualquier otra organización tiene un público con el que necesita comunicarse e interpelar, y como tal ni que decir tiene que canalizan sus mensajes comunicativos de una manera que éstos queden claro y resulten convincentes a su pretendida audiencia. Esto es aún más pertinente en un país como Libia. Las Relaciones Públicas aseguran que las organizaciones sean consideradas favorablemente por su público por comunicarse adecuadamente. Este estudio se basó en la Teoría del Marketing Social y trató de entender las Relaciones Públicas y cómo estas son usadas por las ONG en Libia. En base de los resultados de este estudio se determinó que las Relaciones Públicas especialmente a través de los medios sociales juega efectivamente un papel significativo en el proceso de conseguir donantes y voluntarios para las ONG en Libia. Para llegar a estos resultados se distibuyeron cuestionarios entre la plantilla y el voluntariado de las organizaciones estudiadas y se realizaron entrevistas con técnicos y directivos de ambas organizaciones

    LOCAL GOVERNMENT CONFLICTS AND SERVICE DELIVERY IN IGANGA DISTRICT LOCAL GOVERNMENT: A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY.

    Background:The purpose of the study was to establish the relationship between local government conflicts and service delivery in Iganga District Local Government by examining the relationship between political conflicts and service delivery, assessing the relationship between administrative conflicts and service delivery, and establishing the relationship between procurement conflicts and service delivery. Methodology:The researcher used a case study correlational and cross-sectional survey design characterized by both qualitative and quantitative methods. The population of the study was 75 participants but only 62 were selected as respondents using Krejcie & Morgan (1970). Results:The response rate for the study was 96.7%. Findings identified procurement process conflicts, contract award conflicts, contract management conflicts, budget allocation conflicts, human resource conflicts, oversight conflicts, and protests by political leaders and citizens as common conflicts in Iganga District, There was (r=-0.751, sig=0.001) a negative significant relationship between political conflicts and service delivery in the Iganga District.The correlation between administrative conflicts and the quality of service was -0.244 with a significance value of 0.084. Therefore, there is a weak negative insignificant relationship between administrative conflicts and service delivery in the Iganga district local government. The correlation between procurement conflicts and service delivery was 0.782 with a significance value of 0.001. Conclusion:Therefore, there was a good negative significant relationship between procurement conflicts and service delivery in Iganga District local government. This means that conflicts cause a delay in service delivery as well as limit the quality of services provided by the Iganga District Local Government. Recommendation:The researcher recommends that; political leaders should come up with bylaws that streamline the roles and responsibilities of political and technical staff, administrators should work within given guidelines, and contracts committees should always seek the technical guidance of the technocrats for timely, effective, and quality services

    According to the findings of this study, Instagram users generally sympathize with rape victims, but are more likely to victim-blame when the victim is older than 18 and when the alleged rapist is a popular person or celebrity. The findings also show that social media have helped facilitate rape discourse in Nigeria, by providing a platform where survivors can share their story and create awareness about the problem of sexual abuse.Según los hallazgos de este estudio, los usuarios de Instagram generalmente simpatizan con las víctimas de violación, pero tienen más probabilidades de culpar a la víctima cuando la víctima es mayor de 18 años y cuando el presunto violador es una persona popular o una celebridad.
