Why must we be compelled to undergo curfew regulations? Why must this happen to those who know nothing but America, and who have no loyalty but for America?"The War Relocation Authority (WRA), together with the Wartime Civil Control Administration (WCCA), the Civil Affairs Division (CAD) and the Office of the Commanding General (OFG) of the Western Defense Command (WDC) operated together to segregate and house some 110,000 men women and children from 1942 to 1945. In 1917, Kasai Zenzō(1887–1928) wroteWith the Children in Tow(Ko o tsurete), a short story of approximately eleven pages in its original Shinchōsha edition. Kasai's work, paralleling the actual events that took place in his household from August 9th to 11th of the year of its publication, is exemplary of theshi-shōsetsugenre, I-novel or autobiographical narrative where the author recounts details of his personal life through a thin guise of fiction.</jats:p

Print-specific N170 involves multiple subcomponents for Japanese Hiragana

    No full text
Print-specific N170 in event-related potentials is generally considered to reflect relatively automatic processing for letter strings, which is crucial for fluent reading. However, our previous studies demonstrated that print-specific N170 for transparent Japanese Hiragana script consists of at least two subcomponents under rapid stimulus presentation: an attention-related left-lateralized N170 and a bilateral N170 associated with more automatic orthographic processes (Okumura, Kasai & Murohashi, 2014, 2015). The present study aimed to confirm the latter component by controlling presentation frequency of letters and nonlinguistic visual controls (i.e., symbols), but found a quite different pattern of results; an enhanced occipito-temporal positivity for words (80-120 ms poststimulus) followed by the typical left-lateralized N170 and an enhanced parietal negativity for nonwords (150-200 ms). These results should provide further insights into the interaction processes between attention and early stages of print processing

Angular distribution of bromine atomic photofragment in oriented 2-bromobutane via hexapole state selector

    No full text
In this work, an asymmetric top molecule 2-bromobutane has been successfully oriented by using hexapole state selector combined with orientation field, followed by detection of the bromine atomic photofragment distribution in the photolysis. The photofragment is produced in both the ground Br (2P3/2) and the excited Br (2P1/2) electronic states and both channels are studied by the slice imaging technique, revealing new features in the stereodynamic vectorial properties with respect to previous investigations on non-oriented molecules

As an I-novel author who wrote candidly about his own destructive life, Kasai Zenzo has made a definite mark for himself in the history of modern Japanese literature. However, this ignores the fact that he became active in the literary world in an economically golden age following the Taisho period, and that he received high acclaim as “Waseda Shiga”(Kasai went to Waseda University and Naoya Shiga was another author)and as an author with 140 humanitarian ideals when he finally made his debut. The reason for Kasai being acknowledged in this manner was his consciousness of the then-current heyday of humanitarianism. By molding leading characters, he took a strategic stance that essentially criticized a contemporary society that saw money as the source of all power. However, the acceptance of this strategy was short lived. Fame and fortune transformed Kasai into a popular writer and in satisfying the demands of the media, the literary world changed. From the latter half of 1919, Kasai’s contact with society became sparse and he began to concentrate on aspects surrounding himself for his I-novel. In short, it is possible to say that Kasai Zenzo is product of the golden era of the literary world which arose in the then-favorable conditions of the publishing industry.departmental bulletin pape
