The dichotomy between dreams and reality in Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar's novels İffet and Son Arzu
Yazarınbüyük başarısı, hayal ve hakikat temi çevresinde oluşturduğu bu zıtlığı ustalıkla eserlerine aktarmışolmasıdır.İffet (1896) and Son Arzu (1918) are two novels of Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar, whose ends withtragedy. The novels end with the death of two young girls, İffet and Nuruyezdan, whose maincharacters are educated and virtuous according to their times. Both works are based on real lifestories. Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar explains in the preface of the work that he is one of the heroes ofthe event in his novel İffet. The story of the Son Arzu was conveyed to him by Nuruyezdan's wife. Itis understood that the author wanted to reveal the social structure of the era with these novels. Theethics of the society emerges as another questioned concept. It is seen that romance and realism areexamined in the novel of İffet. In the case of the Son Arzu, the way of thinking and the stagnation ofthe old age is criticized. Women's rights and women-men relations are other criticisms. The maintheme, which is the focus of all these discussions, is shaped by the opposition between imaginationand truth. While there are very few who can be set as good examples in both novels, two virtuouswomen have become immoral in the eyes of society. Despite their weaknesses in realism, HüseyinRahmi Gürpınar's novels Son Arzu and İffet attract attention with the symbolic contrasts theyestablish between the interior of the house and the street. According to this, the interior of thehouse is the representation of “dream” with its disconnection from real life, and the street is therepresentation of “truth”. The more virtuous the language seen in the dialogues and letters at home, the more immoral the language of the street. Home; the worn or superficial it is in expressing theold order, the more real is the life flowing on the street. No matter how sublime the love the heroesset up in their homes, the emotion encountered outside is only about sexuality. The great success ofthe author is that he skillfully transferred this contrast he created around the theme of dreams andreality to his works.</p

In this context, it is important to explain the effects of the use of big data in e-commerce on the competitiveness of businesses, to the business environment. The importance of processing the data, causing the data to gain an economic value, and then analyzing the results in the best way possible is evident. Within the framework of the issues addressed in this study, a comprehensive literature review is presented on the potential application and impact areas of big data in e-commerce businesses and the advantages it provides in achieving competitiveness
CAF across proficiency levels and profiles: an investigation of ESL student writings in an English placement test
This study was an examination of the predictive value of complexity, accuracy and fluency (CAF) across proficiency levels and profiles in second language writing. 150 ESL essays of international students registered at a North American university were analyzed using various CAF measures. Descriptive statistics and one-way ANOVA results indicate that fluency is the strongest indicator of proficiency. Accuracy is also found to distinguish across proficiency levels. Length-based complexity measures are found to better predict proficiency while subordination is found to be a comparatively weak indicator. For lexical complexity, number of different words could better distinguish writers across proficiency levels. When results are analyzed for language profiles, it is found that syntactic complexity and accuracy better distinguish across profiles.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2022-08-01The student, Arzu Avci, accepted the attached license on 2020-07-15 at 12:08.The student, Arzu Avci, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2020-07-15 at 12:24.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2020-07-16 at 18:47.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #15637 on 2020-10-02 at 15:33:38Made available in DSpace on 2020-10-07T22:44:39Z (GMT). Reviewers as Readers with Power : What a Case of Retranslation Says about Author, Translator and Reader Dynamics
The Black Book, Orhan Pamuk’s second novel in English translation, was published in Güneli Gün’s translation in 1994 and in a retranslation by Maureen Freely in 2006. The decision for retranslation was mainly taken by the author on the basis of the criticism the first translation received from the reviewers, the most significant readers of translations with their power to consecrate foreign authors and their work in their new cultural settings. This study will present an analysis of the two translations of The Black Book, taking as its point of departure the criticism expressed in the reviews. The analysis will reveal the ways in which the first translation served as a criterion for the retranslation and how the two translators represented the author and his work differently, which was mainly enabled because of the changing status of Orhan Pamuk as an author in the English-speaking world between 1994 and 2006.Le livre noir, deuxième roman d’Orhan Pamuk en traduction anglaise, a été publié en 1994 dans la traduction de Güneli Gün, puis dans la retraduction de Maureen Freely en 2006.
