    Stacks of cyclic covers of projective spaces

    We define stacks of uniform cyclic covers of Brauer-Severi schemes, proving that they can be realized as quotient stacks of open subsets of representations, and compute the Picard group for the open substacks parametrizing smooth uniform cyclic covers. Moreover, we give an analogous description for stacks parametrizing triple cyclic covers of Brauer-Severi schemes of rank 1 that are not necessarily uniform, and give a presentation of the Picard group of the substacks corresponding to smooth triple cyclic covers

    Computation of caustics related to geometrical solutions with arbitrary initial data of the eikonal equation

    We show how to use the Projective Duality to compute the support of caustics related to geometrical solutions (i.e. Lagrangian submanifolds) of the geometrical Cauchy problem for the eikonal equation, a special case of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. Although the computation is carried out for the simple Hamiltonian function H(q,p)=12p2H(q,p)=\frac{1}{2} p^2 on TR2T^*\mathbb{R}^2, we will deal with {\em arbitary} C2C^2 initial data σ:ΣR\sigma: \Sigma \to \mathbb{R}, assigned on the initial manifold (curve) Σ\Sigma embedded in R2\mathbb{R}^2

    Classroom acoustics: Listening problems in children

    The acoustic quality of classrooms is crucial for children’s listening skills and consequently for their learning. Listening abilities in kids are still developing, and an environment with inadequate acoustic characteristics may create additional problems in speech perception and phonetic recognition. Background noise or reverberation may cause auditory processing problems and greater cognitive effort. There are also other elements which can make difficulty in listening and understanding in noisy environments an even more serious problem, such as learning disabilities, mild to severe hearing loss or bilingualism. Therefore, it is important to improve the acoustic quality of the classrooms, taking into account the specific needs of children in terms of signal-to-noise ratio and reverberation time, in order to ensure a proper quality of listening. The aim of this work is to analyse, through the review of previous studies, the impact that the acoustic of classrooms has on children’s listening skills and learning activities

    Flat F-Manifolds, F-CohFTs, and Integrable Hierarchies

    We define the double ramification hierarchy associated to an F-cohomological field theory and use this construction to prove that the principal hierarchy of any semisimple (homogeneous) flat F-manifold possesses a (homogeneous) integrable dispersive deformation at all orders in the dispersion parameter. The proof is based on the reconstruction of an F-CohFT starting from a semisimple flat F-manifold and additional data in genus 1, obtained in our previous work. Our construction of these dispersive deformations is quite explicit and we compute several examples. In particular, we provide a complete classification of rank 1 hierarchies of DR type at the order 9 approximation in the dispersion parameter and of homogeneous DR hierarchies associated with all 2-dimensional homogeneous flat F-manifolds at genus 1 approximation

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Semisimple flat F-manifolds in higher genus

    In this paper, we generalize the Givental theory for Frobenius manifolds and cohomological field theories to flat F-manifolds and F-cohomological field theories. In particular, we define a notion of Givental cone for flat F-manifolds, and we provide a generalization of the Givental group as a matrix loop group acting on them. We show that this action is transitive on semisimple flat F-manifolds. We then extend this action to F-cohomological field theories in all genera. We show that, given a semisimple flat F-manifold and a Givental group element connecting it to the constant flat F-manifold at its origin, one can construct a family of F-CohFTs in all genera, parameterized by a vector in the associative algebra at the origin, whose genus 00 part is the given flat F-manifold. If the flat F-manifold is homogeneous, then the associated family of F-CohFTs contains a subfamily of homogeneous F-CohFTs. However, unlike in the case of Frobenius manifolds and CohFTs, these homogeneous F-CohFTs can have different conformal dimensions, which are determined by the properties of a certain metric associated to the flat F-manifold.Comment: v2: minor corrections, accepted for publication version, 49 page

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
