E-LIS: an international open archive towards building open digital libraries

    No full text
Established in 2003, E-LIS is an international open access archive related to librarianship, information science and technology, and related disciplines. It uses the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) protocol and tools to facilitate interoperability between repository servers. To date E-LIS is the biggest repository in library and information science and after only two years contains over 2200 papers. E-LIS is the first international e-server in this area, is part of the RCLIS (Research in Computing, Library and Information Science) project and is organised, managed and maintained by an international team of librarians working on a voluntary basis. This paper describes the main characteristics (technical and organizational) of the archive and its configuration and customization, and discusses its policies, aims and mission. Its main focus, however, is on the E-LIS organizational model and on the strategic issues correlated with Open Access (OA). It also delineates some of the challenges and opportunities consequent on a global vision for the Library and Information Science (LIS) field which envisages papers coming from all over the world and which gives E-LIS the impetus and motivation to stimulate participation in the venture and to further develop international research activities. Finally, this paper also emphasises that the promotion of E-LIS further enhances the OA movement in general, so E-LIS can be regarded as a tool for the dissemination of the OA philosophy

Los poemas de Manuel Machado en El Álbum Ibero Americano (1891-1893)

    No full text
Manuel Machado publishes six poems in El Álbum Ibero Americano between December of 1891 and January of 1893, of which three are unknowns, which had not been indicated by his critics nor had been collected in any bibliography. They are, in addition, the first compositions published by its author, advancing in a year the “Cantares” that appeared in the Almanaque de Don Quijote para 1893 and his contributions in La Caricatura from July 1893. In this paper I transcribe, analyze and contextualize these contributions.

----------ABSTRACT---------- On March 29th, 2015, the “Latin America in Construction: Architecture 1955-1980” exhibition was inaugurated. An exhibition that, according to its curators, de¬monstrated the architectural and urban planning originality of a vast region, over a period of twenty-five years. The work involved a five-year research that activated the entire Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA) in the tasks of exploring, identifying and exhibiting over 825 original documents that had never before been collected in the same space. Curators Barry Bergdoll, Jorge Francisco Liernur, Carlos Eduardo Comas and Patricio del Real built a new discourse around Latin American architecture that linked professionals across the whole continent, creating a new epistemological basis for future research. This discourse led to contradiction with, and rethinking of, the reviews made by architectural historians during the previous century. In doing so, they added to international debate a historical period of a region previously overshadowed by other architectural ideas of greater interest and dissemination. This doctoral thesis makes a critical review of the exhibition, with the aim of en¬hancing and building different points of view around Latin American museography and architecture from 1955 through 1980. It is divided into six chapters: the first is an approach to the state of affairs of Latin American architecture in relation to MoMA’s historical exhibitions, from 1929 to present. The second is concerned with the Depart¬ment of Architecture’s policies, its most influential exhibitions, and the scarce attention received by Latin American architecture. The third chapter analyzes two specific exhi¬bitions, “Brazil Builds” (1939) and “Latin America since 1945” (1955), and their close relation with the US Department of State’s interests. In the fourth section, the cura¬tors’ role and the exhibition process methods are analyzed, identifying the selection criteria for the works on display. The fifth chapter examines the exhibition resources by studying the space and the arrangement of the works. The sixth chapter is a study of the reviews received by the exhibition, and its representation in digital media. Finally, the conclusions try to demonstrate the relationships between the several agents invol¬ved in the exhibition and the strategies deployed by MoMA in order to represent and disseminate the continent’s architecture. The thesis includes interviews with the curators, plans and elevations of the exhi¬bition, made expressly by the author. This content offers a deeper understanding and knowledge on the subject, which makes this theoretical-practical research a means to continue advancing in this broad and diverse field of work that encompasses ways of telling and disseminating Latin American architecture, historiography, museography and contemporary reviews

No abstracts are to be cited without prior reference to the author. Harmonizing data and initiatives to move forward the Ecosystem-based Approach to Fisheries (EAF) and the Ecosystem-Based Management (EBM) in European Seas is a current challenge. This process should be assisted by the integrative combination of collaborative pan-European platforms of research that address crucial scientific questions filling fundamental gaps for different regions. The “Working Group on Comparative Analyses between European Atlantic and Mediterranean marine ecosystems to move towards an Ecosystem-based Approach to Fisheries” (WGCOMEDA) was recently established to integrate knowledge and resources from different areas of the Atlantic and Mediterranean, with emphasis on European Seas. The initiative aims at strengthening the scientific basis for regional and integrated ecosystem approaches using a comparative platform of research. This is essential to harmonize and integrate our knowledge on how Atlantic and Mediterranean ecosystems are structured, how they function and how they react to external stressors. WGCOMEDA will investigate cross-systems and system-specific key scientific questions using existing data and analyses. The work plan for 2014 includes (1) the comparative synthesis of current data and tools, and (2) the identification of sensitive ecological processes and functions to climate variability and fishing impact. This new initiative seeks the participation and collaboration of proactive scientists and initiatives in the region
