    Evaluation of dysplasia of the hip (children with DDH, adolescents, and adults)

    Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a congenital anomaly, characterized by insufficient development of coxofemoral joints and concomi- tant laxity of the capsule-binding system, which may result in partial or total loss of coxofemoral joint relationships [1, 2]. It is the most common osteoarticular defor- mity, presents a predilection for female sex with a female/male ratio of 61. The incidence varies between 0.7% and 2.5%, and it is very common in the north Italy, France, Spain, and the Balkans where the incidence stands at 2–4%. Incidence is significantly lower in African and Asian patients [3, 4]. In 45% of cases, it is bilateral and associ- ated with other congenital malformations such as clubfoot. DDH often leads to early degenerative hip arthritis if not treated [5]

    Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Estudos da Tradução, Florianópolis, 2013.Com a intenção de delinear o modo pelo qual o escritor italiano Alessandro Baricco se inseriu no sistema literário brasileiro e os caminhos percorridos pelos seus livros traduzidos, esta dissertação dá voz às experiências tradutórias de seus tradutores. A inserção de Bariccono Brasil tem seu início em 1997, através de uma proposição da Profa. Dra. Roberta Barni à editora Iluminuras da tradução de Oceano Mare. A partir daí, outras sete obras foram publicadas no Brasil, sendo três delas traduzidas por Roberta Barni e as outras quatro por quatro tradutores diferentes. De um lado, considera-se o tradutor como figura principal namediação entre culturas, e, de outro, se analisa a realidade desta figuradentro do sistema literário, sua invisibilidade, seus limites e o exercíciode sua profissão. A pesquisa conta, ainda, com críticas e resenhas referentes ao autor italiano publicadas em jornais consagrados no Brasil, considerando estas como parte constituinte da imagem de Baricco refletida em território nacional. Abstract : Intending to delineate the way the Italian writer Alessandro Baricco has been inserted in the Brazilian literary system and the paths his translated books have followed, this thesis gives voice to the translating experiences of his translators. Baricco's insertion in Brazil began in 1997, through a personal project of Dr. Roberta Barni, with her translation of Oceano Mare. Since then, seven other of his works have been published in Brazil, three of which were translated by Roberta Barni and the other four by four different translators. On the one hand,the translator is considered as the main figure in mediation betweencultures and, on the other, this figure's reality is analyzed within theliterary system: its invisibility, its limits and its professional practice. Criticisms and reviews of this Italian author published in well established Brazilian newspapers are also considered, with the understanding that they are part of Baricco's image reflected here

    Computer-Aided Diagnosis System for Bone Fracture Detection and Classification: A Review on Deep Learning Techniques

    Bone fracture detection and classification was a large discussed topic over the last few years and many researchers proposed different technological solutions to tackle this task. Despite this, a universal approach able to support the classification of fractures in the human body still does not exist today. We aim to provide a first discussion concerning a selection of research works done in the technological domain, with a specific focus on Deep Learning. The objective was to underline a picture on the most promising studies for stimulating a knowledge improvement in the specific focus of bone fracture classification, necessary to start the development of an optimal shared framework. The evaluation has been made involving a first qualitative assessment based on strengths and weaknesses, providing a usage scenario evaluation. This could support the development of a helpful Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) system able to drive doctors in diagnosis tasks reducing diagnosis time, especially in the most complex tasks, and supporting the reduction of wrong diagnosis issues, especially during stressful working conditions, as what frequently happens in many emergency departments

    Classification of AO/OTA 31A/B femur fractures in X-ray images using YOLOv8 and advanced data augmentation techniques

    Femur fractures are a significant worldwide public health concern that affects patients as well as their families because of their high frequency, morbidity, and mortality. When employing computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) technologies, promising results have been shown in the efficiency and accuracy of fracture classification, particularly with the growing use of Deep Learning (DL) approaches. Nevertheless, the complexity is further increased by the need to collect enough input data to train these algorithms and the challenge of interpreting the findings. By improving on the results of the most recent deep learning-based Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen and Orthopaedic Trauma Association (AO/OTA) system classification of femur fractures, this study intends to support physicians in making correct and timely decisions regarding patient care. A state-of-the-art architecture, YOLOv8, was used and refined while paying close attention to the interpretability of the model. Furthermore, data augmentation techniques were involved during preprocessing, increasing the dataset samples through image processing alterations. The fine-tuned YOLOv8 model achieved remarkable results, with 0.9 accuracy, 0.85 precision, 0.85 recall, and 0.85 F1-score, computed by averaging the values among all the individual classes for each metric. This study shows the proposed architecture's effectiveness in enhancing the AO/OTA system's classification of femur fractures, assisting physicians in making prompt and accurate diagnoses

    Hierarchical fracture classification of proximal femur X-Ray images using a multistage Deep Learning approach

    Purpose - Suspected fractures are among the most common reasons for patients to visit emergency departments and often can be difficult to detect and analyze them on film scans. Therefore, we aimed to design a Deep Learning-based tool able to help doctors in diagnosis of bone fractures, following the hierarchical classification proposed by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen (AO) Foundation and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA). Methods - 2453 manually annotated images of proximal femur were used for the classification in different fracture types (1133 Unbroken femur, 570 type A, 750 type B). Secondly, the A type fractures were further classified into the types A1, A2, A3. Two approaches were implemented: the first is a fine-tuned InceptionV3 convolutional neural network (CNN), used as a baseline for our own proposed approach; the second is a multistage architecture composed by successive CNNs in cascade, perfectly suited to the hierarchical structure of the AO/OTA classification. Gradient Class Activation Maps (Grad-CAM) where used to visualize the most relevant areas of the images for classification. The averaged ability of the CNN was measured with accuracy, area under receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC), recall, precision and F1-score. The averaged ability of the orthopedists with and without the help of the CNN was measured with accuracy and Cohen’s Kappa coefficient. Results: We obtained an averaged accuracy of 0.86 (CI 0.84-0.88) for three classes classification and 0.81 (CI 0.79-0.82) for five classes classification. The average accuracy improvement of specialists was 14% with and without the CAD (Computer Assisted Diagnosis) system. Conclusion: We showed the potential of using a CAD system based on CNN for improving diagnosis accuracy and for helping students with a lower level of expertise. We started our work with proximal femur fractures and we aim to extend it to all bone segments further in the future, in order to implement a tool that could be used in every-day hospital routine

    La maturità di Alessandro Fei del Barbiere, in bilico tra Maniera e Riforma

    This article studies the mature career of the Florentine painter Alessandro Fei del Barbiere (1537-1592), beginning with the rediscovery of the 'Ascension' altarpiece formerly in the Albizi Chapel in the destroyed church of San Pier Maggiore, Florence. Studying this painting and others recorded in 1584 by the biographer Raffaello Borghini, such as the two altarpieces for Santa Maria delle Grazie and the Madonna dell'Umiltà in Pistoia, the author reconstructs a body of works showing how in the 1580s Fei gradually went beyond the archaic style of his apprenticeship - he had been trained by Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio and Pierfrancesco Foschi, but was also marked by the Maniera of Vasari - evolving towards naturalism in both mimesis and pictorial handling. In Florence, his development partly parallels that of Santi di Tito and his circle, but Fei was also influenced by a probable sojourn during the early part of that decade in Rome, where he could have been inspired by Girolamo Muziano and the painters working for Pope Gregory XIII. Among other proposals, the author suggests that the artist was responsible for decorating the chancel of Fiesole Cathedral (c. 1584-1589), which consisted of an altarpiece, only rarely discussed by scholars, and a cycle of frescoes hitherto attributed to Nicodemo Ferrucci

    This essay reconstructs the foreign policy of the Italian Communist Party during the four years of Alessandro Natta’s secretariat (1984-1988) through largely original archival documentation, from the Alessandro Natta Fonds of the Historical Archive of the Chamber of Deputies. Natta’s papers are also cross-referenced with those kept in the PCI Archive at the Gramsci Foundation. The author analyses the relationship that the PCI establishes with Gorbachev’s Perestroika, Deng’s China, and European social democracies during the last years of the Cold War

    Third generation delta ceramic-on-ceramic bearing for total hip arthroplasty at mid-term follow-up

    Purpose: to evaluate the results of Delta ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC) for total-hip-arthroplasty (THA). Methods: 261 THA using Delta-CoC, retrospectively analyzed. A 36 mm head was used in 189 cases and a 32/40 mm in the others. The series have been compared to a group of 89 THA with Forte-CoC. Results: The Harris-Hip-Score improved from 49.1 ± 14.3 to 92.0 ± 8.9 (P < 0.001). In the Delta group there were one ceramic fracture and 2 dislocations. Two hips underwent revision. There were one revision in the Forte group for instability and one squeaking hip. Conclusions: The new ceramic bearings provides a safe bearing for THA, with rare complications
