Power and the presidency in Kenya : the Jomo Kenyatta years /
"In December 1963, Kenya formally declared its independence yet it would take a year of intense negotiations for it to transform into a presidential republic, with Jomo Kenyatta as its first president. Archival records of the independence negotiations, however, reveal that neither the British colonial authorities nor the Kenyan political elite foresaw the formation of a presidential regime that granted one man almost limitless executive powers. Even fewer expected Jomo Kenyatta to remain president until his death in 1978. Power and the Presidency in Kenya reconstructs Kenyatta's political biography, exploring the links between his ability to emerge as an uncontested leader and the deeper colonial and postcolonial history of the country. In describing Kenyatta's presidential style as discreet and distant, Anaïs Angelo shows how the burning issues of land decolonization, the increasing centralization of executive powers, and the repression of political oppositions shaped Kenyatta's politics. Telling the story of state-building through political biography, Angelo reveals how historical contingency and structural developments shaped both a man and an institution - the president and the presidency"--Includes bibliographical references and index.Introduction -- Kenyatta's Stateless Political Imagination -- From Prison to Party Leader, an Ambiguous Ascension (1958-1961) -- Kenyatta, Land, and Decolonization (1961-1963) -- Independence and the Making of a President (1963-1964) -- Kenyatta, Meru Politics, and the Last Mau Mau (1961/3-1965) -- Taming Oppositions: Kenyatta's "Secluded" Politics (1964-1966) -- Ruling over a Divided Political Family (1965-1969) -- "Kenyatta Simply Will Not Contemplate His Own Death" -- (1970-1978) -- Conclusion"In December 1963, Kenya formally declared its independence yet it would take a year of intense negotiations for it to transform into a presidential republic, with Jomo Kenyatta as its first president. Anaïs Nin, the Feminine Voice and Erotic Literature
Anaïs Nin, French-Cuban author famous for her 35,000 page diary that has been published in both expurgated and unexpurgated forms, is also the author of several volumes of erotic literature. Nin\u27s Diary and volumes of erotica changed the face of women\u27s literature and erotica by providing the first authentic erotic feminine voice. Examining both the content and the response to said material provides an understanding as to how Nin\u27s works changed what it means to be a woman author and a writer of erotic literature
The Veiled Woman”, “Two Sisters”, “Hilda and Rango”. This work aims to explore the artistic universe and the manifestations of body in short stories by Anaïs Nin, gathered in the books Delta of Venus and Little Birds. The author brings to her stories the relationship of characters and scenarios with different artistic languages to compose the erotica. Based on this assumption, the artistic content is at the heart of my research, turning a reading of pleasure into fruition, according to Roland Barthes’ theory (2010). The first chapter of this thesis brings a theoretical approach regarding sexuality, reviewing topics about the manifestation of erotic and pornographic discourse, the interdiction in Western culture and the condition of women regarding bodies, relationships and literary production. The second chapter deals with some concepts of performance, in the field of arts, as an action, and in the literary, biographical and critical spheres, as the act of writing puts the personal and political on the scene. I present some information about Anaïs Nin’s life and work and her desire to become an artwork. In the third chapter, I read selected short stories from Anaïs Nin's Erotica collection in an expanded field, using the concept proposed by Rosalind Krauss, among which I highlight “Marianne”, “The Veiled Woman”, “Two Sisters”, “Hilda and Rango”.. In addition to those already mentioned, I study the works of Bataille, Foucault, Eliane Robert Moraes, Graciela Ravetti and other authors as a theoretical basis for this thesis. I conclude that, when writing about art and eroticism based on her own experiences, Anaïs Nin writes as a performer, turning herself into her artwork. Writing on her work, I perform a critical reading in Comparative Literature
Abstract. "Habitat léger... mais résilient ?" is winning research project of the Bourse Leleux 2019, led by Anaïs Angéras, Gérald Ledent, Chloé Salembier. This article describes the production and construction practices of so-called light housing and examines the principle of self-construction as an inherent and structured aspect of light housing. This first part echoes the study day held on 25 March 2023 at UCLouvain. In the second part, a personal summary by the author extracts the reasons, networks and resiliency at play in the self-building of lightweight housing

National audienceThis book is a complete study of the material and cultural aspects of manuscripts making in Christian Ethiopia. Palaeography, making of parchment, preparation of inks, preparation of quires, binding, preparation of the writing surface, writing and copying, meaning of notes and decorations, illuminations... all information necessary for a real codicology of Ethiopian manuscripts is detailed for the first time, with its Amharic and Ge‘ez terminology. Thanks to the professional experience of the author, who has been travelling all over Ethiopia, synchronicity and regionalism have been taken into account. This study is based on a very vast corpus of manuscripts. The author also deals with cultural and social aspects as the education of scribes, their daily work, and finally gives some short biographies of famous scribes. The book in Amharic is published together with a short English postface by Anaïs Wion (CNRS). It presents the author, the history of this book initiated by the great historian Tadesse Tamrat, the state of the art in the study of Ethiopian manuscripts and, of course, the need for the publication of the present study. A set of photos of the tools of scribe and parchments makers has been shot and will be inserted all through the book

Based on the perspective of Denis Guénoun of a political view of the theatre, the purpose of this work is to evoke some possibilities of comprehension of this dimension in the theatrical art, with an analysis of the comedy Les absents ont raison, written in 1852 by French playwright AnaTs Ségalas. In this piece, the author contemplates the issue of laws that regulated marriage and divorce in France during the nineteenth century. Becoming Minister for Lands: Jackson Angaine and Meru politics (1961-1963)
Anaïs Angelo,"Becoming Minister for Lands: Jackson Angaine and Meru politics (1961-1963)", Mambo! Volume XIV (3), 2016. In 1978 British Officials profiled the most prominent Kenyan politicians and produced a document entitled “Leading Personalities in Kenya, 1978”. Their information was certainly inspired by regular talks they had with influential civil servants, and bore the marks of the insidious tensions between ministers and provincial administrators that pertained Kenyan politics since ..
