It provides quasi-verbatim interviews with Tom Horlick-Jones, Paul Slovic and Andy Alaszewski. Tom Horlick-Jones contributed to Chapter 6 of the Royal Society Risk monograph, on risk management. He offers further insights into the debates which underlay its production to those given by Nick Pidgeon in the first article of this series. Paul Slovic provides a North American perspective on risk social science. Risk, Uncertainty and Life Threatening Trauma: Analysing Stroke Survivor's Accounts of Life after Stroke
Get PDFThis paper examines the ways in which
stroke survivors identify and manage the risks and
uncertainties of their situation. It draws on
interview data from a UK study in East Kent of 31
stroke survivors (aged between 38 and 89 years).
The interviews created accounts based on the
experience of stroke and post stroke recovery.
Stroke survivors experienced their stroke as an
unanticipated event in which there was a failure of
foresight. The stroke undermined their ontological
security and increased their awareness of and
anxiety about everyday activities both in and
outside the home, created awareness of a new
danger, that of having another potentially fatal
stroke, and could damage their social standing.
Survivors used a variety of strategies to manage
such uncertainties. They shortened their time
horizons, either abandoning longer-term plans or
discussing them in very vague and general terms.
They concentrated either on the present, "taking
each day as it comes" or developed goals to
structure the short-term future. These short-term
goals involved challenges and there was in some
cases the possibility of a harmful outcome. Such
voluntary risk-taking provided an opportunity for
"centre work" which could re-establish the stroke
survivors social standing

The book is unusual in that it provides a "holistic" approach to research methodology without distinguishing arbitrarily between quantitative and qualitative methodologies. "Using Diaries for Social Research" could be very useful for students, as well as for more seasoned researchers delving into this particular form of autobiographical or self-observing text. When I discovered a diary written by an Ethiopian Jew in Jerusalem after the First World War, I could have benefited from this lucid book, which explicates alternative strategies for analyzing diaries, delineates the key issues researchers should consider when confronting diaries, and shows how one can analyze the structure of diaries. The book is an excellent beginning on a fascinating subject, illustrated by exercises and providing recommended reading. It is a pity that the word "reflexivity" does not appear even once in the Index.

Das Buch ist ungewöhnlich, weil es einen ganzheitlichen Zugang zu Forschungsmethoden nutzt ohne eine eher willkürliche Differenzierung qualitativer und quantitativer Methodologien. Und: "Using Diaries for Social Research" ist sowohl für Studierende als auch für erfahrene Forscher und Forscherinnen hilfreich, die sich mit autobiographischen oder selbst-beobachtenden Texten beschäftigen. Ich selbst hätte ganz wesentlich von diesem erhellenden Buch profitiert, hätte ich es bereits zur Hand gehabt, als ich an dem Tagebuch eines äthiopischen Juden aus der Zeit nach dem 1. Weltkrieg arbeitete: "Using Diaries" behandelt ausführlich die wesentlichsten Themen, die Forschenden begegnen, wenn sie sich mit Tagebuchforschung beschäftigen, erörtert unterschiedliche Interpretationsstrategien und zeigt Wege, wie die Struktur von Tagebüchern sinnvoll analysiert werden kann. Das Buch taugt bestens als Ausgangspunkt für das Vertrautwerden mit einem faszinierten Thema, auch weil Beispiele zur Veranschaulichung angeboten werden; darüber hinaus sind Empfehlungen für weiterführende Literatur aufgenommen. Unverständlich ist allerdings, dass der Begriff "Reflexivität" kein einziges Mal im Index erscheint.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
