A novel technique# for on line adaptation of neural network classifiers to non#stationary image and video inputs, is proposed in this paper. The scheme includes# on the one hand, a maximum a posteriori procedure which optimally estimates the most representative data of the current environment and# on the other hand, a retrieval mechanism which selects the most appropriate network classifier from a system memory. Small perturbation of the retrieved network weights is then performed for further improving the network performance

AI-MIA: COVID-19 Detection & Severity Analysis through Medical Imaging

    No full text
This paper presents the baseline approach for the organized 2nd Covid-19 Competition, occurring in the framework of the AIMIA Workshop in the European Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV 2022). It presents the COV19-CT-DB database which is annotated for COVID-19 detction, consisting of about 7,700 3-D CT scans. Part of the database consisting of Covid-19 cases is further annotated in terms of four Covid-19 severity conditions. We have split the database and the latter part of it in training, validation and test datasets. The former two datasets are used for training and validation of machine learning models, while the latter will be used for evaluation of the developed models. The baseline approach consists of a deep learning approach, based on a CNN-RNN network and report its performance on the COVID19-CT-DB database.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2106.0752

Abstract:- Any performance evaluation of broadband networks requires statistical analysis and modeling of the actual network traffic. Since multimedia services and especially MPEG coded video streams are expected to be a major traffic component over these networks, modeling of such services and accurate estimation of the network resources are crucial for the reliable operation of the future telecommunication networks. In this paper, modeling and statistical analysis of video traffic, generated by long duration real world MPEG-1 encoders, are performed. Particularly, the MPEG video traffic is approximated by a stochastic model, consisting of two Markov chains, based on statistical properties of MPEG-1 sources. The chains are responsible for approximation of packet size and the respective arrival intervals of the traffic respectively. Experimental results are presented using two real-life MPEG-1 coded video sources at two different bit rates, which indicate the good performance of the proposed model as far as the estimation of the network resources is concerned at different buffer sizes and utilization degree

Study of glucose transport in white blood cells and of adiponectin receptors expression in peripheral monocytes and correlation with the metabolism, cytokine production and clinical indices of insulin resistance and atheromatosis

Background: White blood cells are essential in mediating immune and inflammatory responses. Despite the fact that their functions have an established role in the host’s defense, they have also central role in the development of inflammatory and atherosclerotic processes. A prominent feature in these cells during activation of the immune function is to increase glucose utilization. This seems to have implications in terms of glucose homeostasis, especially since insulin has been reported to modulate their metabolism and function. Moreover, these cells, and especially monocytes, are a known target of hormones such as adiponectin which has anti-inflammatory and anti-atheromatic action. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate: (1) glucose transporters (GLUT) expression and glucose transport in the subpopulations of white blood cells in resting and activated state, as well as the effect of insulin on the GLUT expression in these cells, (2) the disorders of GLUT expression and insulin/IGF-I action in monocytes in states of insulin resistance such as obesity and thyroid dysfunction, (3) the expression of adiponectin receptors in monocytes and their alterations in states of insulin resistance and atheromatosis. Material and Methods: For the study of GLUT expression and glucose transport, blood was withdrawn from 27 healthy subjects, 6 patients with obesity, 10 patients with primary hyperthyroidism and 12 patients with primary hypothyroidism. White blood cells subpopulations were seperated by immunomagnetic isolation and GLUT expression, as well as glucose transport, were evaluated with flow cytometry. For the study of the adiponectin receptors, monocytes were isolated from 55 patients subjected to coronary angiography. Adiponectin receptors mRNA and protein levels were assessed with real-time PCR and flow cytometry respectively. Results: (1) All white blood cells subpopulations expressed GLUT1, GLUT3 and GLUT4 isoforms on their plasma membrane. In the resting state, monocytes and B-lymphocytes increased the abundance of surface GLUT3 and GLUT4 in response to physiological concentrations of insulin. In the activated state all the cells increased the expression of GLUT isoforms on their plasma membrane; insulin augmented the expression of GLUT3 and GLUT4 in addition to the stimulation effect. (2) In obesity GLUT3 and GLUT4 translocation on the monocyte plasma membrane in response to insulin was impaired, while IGF-I retained its action. In hyperthyroidism basal abundance of GLUT3 and GLUT4 on the monocyte plasma membrane was increased. However, the total response of GLUT4 recruitment in the presence of insulin was decreased, while that of GLUT3 was normal. ..................................................................................................................
