She is the author of Lotería (Sundress Publications, 2022), Songs of Brujería (Big Lucks, 2019) and co-editor for Of Color: Poets’ Ways of Making: An Anthology of Essays on Transformative Poetics (Operating System, 2019). Her writing has been supported by fellowships and scholarships from MacDowell, Vermont Studio Center, Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and others. She received a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing from Old Dominion University, and she is a doctoral student in English at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa

    The Emergence of the Intuition of Truth in Mathematical Thought

    In this contribution regarding the emergent character of the intuition of truth in mathematics, S. Galvan examines the feasibility of applying the category of emergence to the hierarchy of formal systems and to the hierarchy of the evidence systems which are their correlates. This hierarchy is a direct consequence of the phenomenon of incompleteness, in its various forms that result from Godel's theorems. Hence the contribution explores the meaning of the most significant form of incompleteness resulting from Godel's theorems, namely the omega-incompleteness of arithmetic theories, and examines some methods able to remedy this form of incompleteness. In particular, two ways are explored to overcome the incompleteness of primitive recursive arithmetic PRA: the first consists in the use of an explicit Tarskian theory of truth and the second is hased on a notion of truth as non-finitary evidentiability. In both cases, the determination of the theory's consistency always requires the emergent character of truth from derivability; in the first case, due to the non-finitary extensional character of the model-theoretical notion of truth (inasmuch as the objectual domain is understood in an actualistic sense) and, in the second, because of the abstract intensional character of the soundness proof within a non-conservative extension of PRA. To operate according to principles hased on forms of evidence that are abstract and open to novelty is very different from operating in accordance with the computational logic of a machine. The Galvan' contribution shows how the mind follows its own paths in discovering the truth and the modalities of its justification, this being due to the fact that this undertaking cannot be restricted to the use of only concrete contents and their finite combinations. The author argues that it follows that a cognitive system endowed with the capability of intending the abstract is characterized by a relationship to the ohject which is not one of reception but of presence. The object is known insofar as it is present to the system and not as a mere source of stimuli elaborated by the system. This relationship shows the mark of the emergent novelty, which is the mark of the emergence of consciousness, which in its turn is a pre-condition af the presence af an object to the cognitive system

    Amanda Galvan Huynh (she/her) is a Xicana writer and educator from Texas. She is the author of a chapbook, Songs of Brujería (Big Lucks September 2019) and Co-Editor of Of Color: Poets’ Ways of Making: An Anthology of Essays on Transformative Poetics (The Operating System 2019). Her debut poetry collection, Where My Umbilical is Buried, is forthcoming in March 2023 with Sundress Publications. Amanda has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize, Best New Poets, and Sundress Publications’ Best of the Net. She was a 2016 AWP Intro Journal Project Award Winner, 2018 Best of the Net Winner, a finalist for the 2015 Gloria Anzaldúa Poetry Prize, and a finalist for the 2017 Poetry Society of America Chapbook Fellowship. Her poetry can be read in print and online journals such as Hayden’s Ferry Review, Puerto del Sol, The Southampton Review, and others. This species is similar to <i>Eucalantica polita</i> in the overall appearance but it differs from the latter generally in the smaller size (the forewing length 5.1–5.6 mm in <i>E. nestori</i> <b>n. sp.</b> vs. 5.5–8.0 mm in <i>E. polita</i>) and the presence of the pale-reddish brown forewing fringe (white in <i>E. polita</i>), the distally broader valva and the larger projection above the sacculus in the male genitalia (Figs 1C for <i>E. nestori</i> <b>n. sp.</b> and 1D for <i>E. polita</i>).</p> <p> <i>Description</i>. Head—Vertex white, intermixed with dark grayish brown scales anterolaterally; frons pale brownish gray, darkened laterally. Antenna 3/4 as long as forewing; scape white; basal seven flagellomeres white dorsally; rest flagellomeres annulated with white. Labial palpus porrect; 1 st palpomere pale grayish brown; 2 nd palpomere denser distad, 4x longer than 1 st palpomere, white dorsally, dark grayish brown ventrally; 3 rd palpomere as long as 2 nd palpomere, white dorsally, dark grayish brown ventrally, with triangular scale-tuft. Thorax—Patagium, tegula and mesonotum white. Foreleg lustrous; coxa and femur white laterally, pale grayish brown mesally; tibia and tarsomeres dark grayish brown. Midleg lustrous; coxa white; femur white, tinged with pale grayish brown distally; femur dark grayish brown dorsally, white ventrally; tarsomeres dark grayish brown. Hindleg lustrous white. Forewing length 5.1–5.6 mm, lustrous white, narrowly round apically; costal band in basal 1/5 grayish brown; discal spot black; dorsal patch present in distal half of dorsal margin, expanded at basal 1/5, reddish brown, accompanied with black scales above basal expansion; terminal area dot-lined with few black scales; fringe pale reddish brown. Hindwing lustrous gray, darkened to apex; fringe pale gray. Abdomen—Terga and sterna lustrous white.</p> <p>Male genitalia (Figs 1C, D)—Uncus 1/5 as long as socii, linguiform, with subconical tubercle posterolaterally; socius 5x longer than uncus, elongate, digitate, with a row of four ventral spines terminally; spines on socius gradually smaller distad. Tegumen parallel-sided, slightly narrowed in distal 1/3; subscaphium bulged and granulate ventrad. Valva gradually enlarged distad, broadly round apically, setose on distal and ventral areas; costa narrow, enlarged in basal 1/4; saccular margin evenly rounded; sacculus narrow, gradually enlarged to base; a small semielliptical mound above basal 1/8 of saccular margin. Saccus 2/3 as long as socius, elongate, slightly dilated in apex. Phallus 2x longer than saccus, slender, weakly sinuate; cornutus absent.</p> <p>Female genitalia(Fig.1E)—Sternite VIII sclerotized,with a shallow,semielliptical,setose humps posterolaterally. Papilla analis semirectangular, dilated dorsally, setose. Apophysis posterioris 4x longer than apophysis anterioris excluding basal Y-fork. Minute thorns on area around humps of sternite VIII. Antrum subquadrate, concave posteromarginally, with minute thorns on internal wall. Ductus bursae 1/4 as long as corpus bursae, narrow; bulla seminalis long-obovate. Corpus bursae 2x larger than bulla seminalis, oval; signum absent.</p> <p> <i>Distribution</i>. Mexico (Puebla).</p> <p> <i>Etymology</i>. This species is named after Prof. Néstor Bautista Martínez who was a doctorate advisor of the first author and had dedicated most parts of his life to the Mexican insects of agricultural importance. The species epithet is a noun in the genitive case.</p> <p> <i>Host plant</i>. Ericaceae — <i>Vaccinium ashei</i> Reade.</p> <p> <i>Remarks</i>. This new species has been found only in a small area of the Puebla state in Mexico. An expanded inventory on blueberry farms in other states may reveal the broader distribution of the species than depicted in the present article. Another congener, <i>E. vaquero</i> Sohn widely occurs in Arizona, United States and Veracruz, Mexico (Sohn & Nishida 2011). This species seems associated with the blueberry family, likewise other congeners but its host plants remain unknown.</p> 2. Biology <p> Larvae of <i>E. nestori</i> <b>n. sp.</b> were observed almost all year round. The new <i>Eucalantica</i> species was found in all the sampled plantations in the surveyed region but the economic damage it causes is still unknown. On the infested blueberries, they feed on young shoots and flowers, except in the months of hibernation when the foliage is reddish and soon later dropped. The larvae primarily feed on leaves, leaving only the leaf skeletons. A silken net produced by the larva for protection can be seen among the leaves. The nest can be confused with ones of tortricids associated with blueberries. The silken web of the larva can often be expanded to flowers. In such cases, the larvae feed on the pistil and stamens and completely destroy the whole flowers (Fig. 2A). Because they are borers, most of the damage is observed in young vegetative buds (Fig. 2B). The infested shoots show initially wilting of stems and leaves, followed by a color change to reddish brown and finally necrosis. The shoots then bend into a cane shape and remain on the plant for several months (Figs 2D, E). The damaged shoots have an average length of five to 12 cm, and in the lower part a circular orifice can be observed where the larva enters and exits and where its excreta are expelled (Fig. 2C). When the larva is fully developed, it leaves the shoot and seeks refuge for pupation in the leaves nearby.     Criando Cartilha Médicas!: Elaboração e Descrição de uma Unidade Temática para o Ensino de Português a Estudantes de Medicina da UNILA

    Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso apresentado ao Instituto Latino-Americano de Arte, Cultura e História da Universidade Federal da Integração Latino-Americana, como requisito parcial à obtenção do título de Licenciado em Letras – Espanhol e Português como Línguas Estrangeiras.O presente trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar o processo de elaboração de uma unidade temática para o ensino de português, no nível básico, como língua estrangeira, a estudantes do curso de medicina da UNILA. O suporte teórico-metodológico do trabalho é o Ensino de Línguas por Tarefas. Neste trabalho desenvolve-se uma reflexão sobre as etapas de criação da unidade tendo em conta três momentos: pré-tarefa, ciclo da tarefa, e pós-tarefa. Promove-se uma descrição sobre cada etapa que compõe esta unidade, os conteúdos trabalhados e os ajustes necessários de acordo com cada tópico gramatical com especial atenção às especificidades do par linguístico espanhol-português. Para tanto, optou-se pelo gênero cartilha após a análise de questionários respondidos por docentes da Medicina e do Projeto Político Pedagógico do curso. Ao mesmo tempo, houve a preocupação de inserir na unidade orientações e sugestões aos docentes de modo que o material possa ser ampliado e utilizado em diferentes níveis. Por último, propõe-se três tabelas de (auto)avaliação: a primeira tabela avalia o entendimento dos alunos sobre o gênero discursivo cartilha; a segunda avalia a produção de cartilhas e a terceira a compreensão de tópicos gramaticais, seu uso e funcionamento. Em tal contexto, acredita-se que a unidade temática “Criando Cartilhas Médicas” contribui para um processo de ensino-aprendizagem mais colaborativo e autônomo, para desenvolver no aluno a capacidade de compreender e produzir o gênero de acordo com diferentes contextos, e promover automonitoramento e consciência linguística

    These data are the source data for the manuscript entitled "Basal Ganglia Neurons in Healthy and Parkinsonian Primates Generate Recurring Sequences of Spikes", authored by Adriana Galvan and Thomas Wichmann (Emory University, Atlanta, GA). The data are interspike interval measurements generated from electrophysiological recordings of spontaneous spiking activities of single neurons in the basal ganglia of awake monkeys, before and after rendering them parkinsonian by treatment with MPTP. THe animals were not engaged in any task or other structured activity. The data format is a one-column listing of successive interspike intervals, and are presented in milliseconds.     Open Negotiation Education for Academic Libraries – Introducing the ONEAL Project

    CAUL welcomes the team from the ONEAL Project who will speak about the valuable work the organisation provides in developing curricula and open educational resources to support negotiation education for academic libraries and Master of Library Science (MLS/MLIS) programs. These resources introduce negotiation theory and practical strategy using academic library context of negotiating vendor agreements. The open curriculum will include introductions to critical issues in academic libraries as they intersect with contract negotiations such as user privacy, platform governance, emerging publishing models, author rights, and computational collections research. Speaking on behalf of the ONEAL Project will be Katharine V. Macy (Project Director/Principal Investigator), Scarlet Galvan (Co-Principal Investigator.     Promoter polymorphisms and transcript levels of nicotinic receptor CHRNA5

    Chromosomal locus 15q25, implicated in lung cancer risk and nicotine dependence, shows extensive linkage disequilibrium that complicates identification of causal variation. Cholinergic receptor nicotinic α5 (CHRNA5) has been identified as a lung cancer risk factor. We identified by sequence analysis three haplotypes (delTTC, insATC, and insTGG) in the 5′ promoter region and three at the 3′-untranslated region of CHRNA5. Linkage disequilibrium analysis of the 5′ variants showed that the insTGG haplotype is associated with three tightly linked risk alleles (nicotine dependence, lung cancer, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). The three CHRNA5 promoter haplotypes were statistically significantly associated with lung CHRNA5 transcript levels, determined by real-time polymerase chain reaction. In nontumor lung parenchyma from 68 patients who underwent lung lobectomy, the delTTC haplotype was associated with the highest CHRNA5 transcript levels (relative quantification units = 1.82), whereas the insTGG haplotype was associated with the lowest (0.88 units, Pdiff <. 001, Welch t test; all statistical tests were two-sided). Luciferase reporter assays in human lung cancer cell lines A549, H460, H520, and H596 also showed that the 5′ region haplotypes were statistically significantly associated with changes in CHRNA5 promoter activity, whereas the 3′-untranslated region variants were not. © 2010 The Author

    Unconventionality and Judgment in Thomas Hardy’s The Mayor of Casterbridge

    My thesis explores Thomas Hardy’s vision and his complexity as an author, primarily through his work "The Mayor of Casterbridge". I seek to draw conclusions about Hardy's overall purpose for this specific work and as an author in general by closely analyzing "The Mayor of Casterbridge" in regards to its complicated narration, characterization, genre, and format. Ultimately, I argue that Hardy's subtle manipulation of these seemingly ordinary techniques is a defining feature of this work. By analyzing Hardy's literary deviations from the norm, I hope to prove that Hardy's "The Mayor of Casterbridge" is both complex and judgmental; and that his judgment is not only toward his characters, but his readers as well.No embargoAcademic Major: Englis
