This fileset contains the implementation of RDLS-DWT and SS-DWT in JPEG 2000 (RDLS-SS-DWT v. 0.9), which was used in a research described in: R. Starosolski, “Application of reversible denoising and lifting steps to DWT in lossless JPEG 2000 for improved bitrates,” Signal Processing: Image Communication, Vol. 39, Part A, pp. 249-63, DOI: 10.1016/j.image.2015.09.013, 2015 and R. The sinking of the Ro–Ro passenger ferry SS Heraklion

On December 8, 1966 the Ro–Pax ferry SS Heraklion capsized and sank in the Aegean Sea, resulting in the death of over 200 people. The present paper tries to shed some light into the various events that led to the largest tragedy of modern Greek maritime history. It re-constructs the accidental data based on a variety of original investigation reports, ship files and legal evidence. Ship’s loading, intact and damage stability behaviour were re-investigated and the flooding/sinking of the ship was simulated by use of a time simulation method. Results of our investigation were compared with available testimonies of survivors. It was found that downflooding of large void spaces below the flooded car deck and the effect of multiple free surfaces on ship’s stability was eventually the main reason for SS Heraklion’s capsize

IMPACTS OF UNIVERSITY FINANCIAL AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT ON STUDENT PERFORMANCE AT THE SS-AAEA QUIZBOWL COMPETITION AND IN THE CLASSROOM

A 2001 survey of SS-AAEA Quizbowl participants suggested potential benefits of the SS-AAEA Quizbowl Competition to students' academic performance. A new survey of quizbowl advisers is used with the previous data to determine the impact of a university's academic and/or financial support of participants on students' performances at the competition.Teaching/Communication/Extension/Profession,

THE SS-AAEA QUIZBOWL: SUCCESS IN AND OUT OF THE CLASSROOM A THREE YEAR STUDY

    No full text
A three year study of the Quizbowl participants and advisers reveals perceptions on how beneficial preparation for and participation in the SS-AAEA Quizbowl are in successfully completing related course work in eight areas of economics at their universities and how funding impacts performance. Additionally responses indicate overall satisfaction with Quizbowl event.Teaching/Communication/Extension/Profession,

Waffen-SS veterans and their sites of memory today

Book abstract: This is the first systematic pan-European study of the hundreds of thousands of non-Germans who fought ― either voluntarily or under different kinds of pressures ― for the Waffen-SS (or auxiliary police formations operating in the occupied East). Building on the findings of regional studies by other scholars ― many of them included in this volume ― The Waffen-SS aims to arrive at a fuller picture of those non-German citizens (from Eastern as well as Western Europe) who served under the SS flag. Where did the non-Germans in the SS come from (socially, geographically, and culturally)? What motivated them? What do we know about the practicalities of international collaboration in war and genocide, in terms of everyday life, language, and ideological training? Did a common transnational identity emerge as a result of shared ideological convictions or experiences of extreme violence? In order to address these questions (and others), The Waffen-SS adopts an approach that does justice to the complexity of the subject, adding a more nuanced, empirically sound understanding of collaboration in Europe during World War II, while also seeking to push the methodological boundaries of the historiographical genre of perpetrator studies by adopting a transnational approach.</p

    RIC-HSCT for MF/SS

Advanced-stage mycosis fungoides and Sezary syndrome (MF/SS) have a poor prognosis. Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), particularly using a reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC) regimen, is a promising treatment for advanced-stage MF/SS. We performed RIC-HSCT in nine patients with advanced MF/SS. With a median follow-up period of 954days after HSCT, the estimated 3-year overall survival was 85.7% (95% confidence interval, 33.4-97.9%) with no non-relapse mortality. Five patients relapsed after RIC-HSCT; however, in four patients whose relapse was detected only from the skin, persistent complete response was achieved in one patient, and the disease was manageable in other three patients by the tapering of immunosuppressants and donor lymphocyte infusion, suggesting that graft-versus-lymphoma effect and "down-staging" effect from advanced stage to early stage by HSCT improve the prognosis of advanced-stage MF/SS. These results suggest that RIC-HSCT is an effective treatment for advanced MF/SS

Carbohydrate metabolism of vegetative and reproductive sinks in the late-maturing peach cultivar ‘Encore’

Activities of NAD+-dependent sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH), sucrose synthase (SS), acid invertase (AI), and neutral invertase (NI) in ‘Encore’ peach (Prunus persica L.) fruits and developing shoot tips were followed during the growth season to see whether they could serve as indicators of sink strength. In fruit flesh, SS was active during stage I of growth, when cells were actively dividing, and SDH activity was detected during stage III, when cells were actively enlarging. Acid invertase was active in stage I and showed the best correlation with the relative increase in fruit weight during the season. During seed filling and pit hardening (stage II), when relative fruit growth rate was slowest, activities of carbohydrate metabolizing enzymes in fruit flesh were not detectable. No sorbitol oxidase (SOX) activity was detected during stages I and II. The highest sucrose content occurred when sucrose metabolizing enzyme activities were low, near the end of fruit development. In developing shoot tips, SDH activity was low at the beginning and end of the season when vegetative growth was slowest. Also, shoot tips exhibited a 2 : 1 sorbitol : sucrose (w : w) ratio during these periods. A 1 : 1 sorbitol : sucrose (w : w) ratio along with an increase in SDH activity was present in shoot tips during mid-growing season. In root tips of ‘Nemaguard’ peach, SDH exhibited its highest activity compared to that in other organs. When sorbitol and sucrose metabolizing enzyme activities were correlated with shoot growth of ‘Nemaguard’ plants, only SDH activity showed a positive response

Church Fathers of SS. Redentore in Monselice

My thesis is about the history of four frescos of four Church's Fathers, datet 1575-1599, situated today in SS. Redentore of Monselice (PD). This frescos aren't today in the original site, because they were removed from it. In this work I will suggest an hypothesis of attribution and of original collocation. I'll talk about the history of SS. Redentore and about the history of benedictine monastery of S. Salvaro in Monselice, the site that I supposed the frescos come from. I will make an hypothesis of the motivation of this removal. In the end I will talk about the problem of the research of informations in the world of the arts
