Developing a grid computing system for commercial-off-the-shelf simulation packages

    No full text
Today simulation is becoming an increasingly pervasive technology across major business sectors. Advances in COTS Simulation Packages and Commercial Simulation Software have made it easier for users to build models, often of large complex processes. These two factors combined are to be welcomed and when used correctly can be of great benefit to organisations that make use of the technology. However, it is also the case that users hungry for answers do not always have the time, or possibly the patience, to wait for results from multiple replications and multiple experiments as standard simulation practice would demand. There is therefore a need to support this advance in the use of simulation within today’s business with improved computing technology. Grid computing has been put forward as a potential commercial solution to this requirement. To this end, Saker Solutions and the Distributed Systems Research Group at Brunel University have developed a dedicated Grid Computing System (SakerGrid) to support the deployment of simulation models across a desktop grid of PCs. The paper identifies route taken to solve this challenging issue and suggests where the future may lie for this exciting integration of two effective but underused technologies

L’écriture De Soi Dans La Littérature D’exil

This dissertation studies the theme of self-writing in exile literature. The corpus consists of The Lover (1984), Marguerite Duras, The Enigma of Return (2009), Dany Laferrière and Ru (2009), by Kim Thúy. Referring to these three works, we treat the experience of exile through the prism of self-writing. In this work we discussed the following questions: What are the particularities of self-writing? What is the point of writing about one’s self? Why does an author choose to write about himself? What relationship does he maintain with the country of origin, and for some, with the family that stayed there? Can we say that the goal is above all a search that leads to self- discovery? How does exile influence self-writing? In the case of the three mentioned authors, is it autobiographical or autofictional writing? What would be the differences between these two subgenres? What conclusions can be drawn about the relationship between exile writing and self-writing by comparing these three writers so different in their approaches? In order to analyze the particularities of the writing one’s self from a narrative point of view, we addressed these texts through two theories: Autobiography according to Philippe Lejeune who has written Le pact autobiographique (1976) and autofiction, a neologism invented by Serge Doubrouvsky who invented this term in his book Fils (1977) written as an answer to Lejeune\u27s book, Le pacte autobiographique. We concluded that in each one of these three texts, the narrator goes in search of his past, by reporting facts and memories but also through self-psychoanalyzing by positioning himself a step back from his own’s. Thus, the writing of one’s self in the books of exile, is carried out using memories of a past that the protagonist constantly relives, proving that childhood, the country of origin is always an essential part of life. Talking about them becomes a matter of cohabiting with the self of the past and that of the present, making the country of childhood and that of adult life one place or at least find a compromise in the unconscious in order to be able to free oneself from this space of in between: two countries, two cultures, even two lives

Exploring the business case for more adaptable buildings: Lessons from case sudies

This paper explores the business case for designing more adaptable buildings, an issue that has, for the most part, been overlooked in the literature. It reviews some of the existing literature on adaptability and discusses the drivers for and barriers to designing buildings that are more adaptable. In doing so, it draws upon lessons from the developing market for \u91greener\u92 or more sustainable buildings. The costs and benefits of designing more adaptable buildings are explored through a workshop with industry stakeholders and illustrated with evidence from case studies. The findings of this research highlight the circumstances that would need to change, in terms of industry mindsets and market conditions, in order for adaptable buildings to become more widespread

International audienceA series of bimetallic [(NHC)PtX2]2(diamine) complexes have been prepared as a new chemotype for potential anticancer agents. These complexes display an uncommon set of structural features as far as they combine two bifunctional, trans-configured platinum centers. They display cytotoxic activities in the micromolar range on many cancerous cell lines and do not cross-react with cisplatin in A2780/DDP cell lines. They bind slowly to double-stranded DNAs, giving monoadducts as the major products. Pathways for cellular toxicity have been investigated for both mono- and bimetallic trans-(NHC)PtX2(amine) complexes. It has been highlighted that, unlike cisplatin, these complexes do not induce cell cycle arrest. They trigger apoptosis in A2780 cells by a pathway involving translocation of apoptosis-inducing factor and caspase 12 to the nucleus. Moreover, bimetallic complexes may induce necrosis

Company X Collaborative Thesis: Real Estate

abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has and will continue to radically shift the workplace. An increasing percentage of the workforce desires flexible working options and, as such, firms are likely to require less office space going forward. Additionally, the economic downturn caused by the pandemic provides an opportunity for companies to secure favorable rent rates on new lease agreements. This project aims to evaluate and measure Company X’s potential cost savings from terminating current leases and downsizing office space in five selected cities. Along with city-specific real estate market research and forecasts, we employ a four-stage model of Company X’s real estate negotiation process to analyze whether existing lease agreements in these cities should be renewed or terminated.

Consumption is an environmental issue in Sweden that must adapt towards circular economy. Re-use is a part of circular economy and is more environmentally friendly than material recycling. Even though municipal recycling centrals offers the possibility for their visitors to re-use functioning things, considerable amounts are still thrown to be energy recycled by incineration.  By combining results from studies about nudging and recycling with the conditions, physical and social, of Gävle recycling central, 3 nudges where designed. One uses a descriptive social norm about re-use, the second simplifies the behavior of re-use and the third combines the two previous nudges into one. These will be used to test if nudging as a method can convince waste throwers that intend to throw away re-usable things to re-use them instead. 4 hypotheses were formulated about the effect of the designed nudges and then a field experiment was conducted by the author. The experiment did not yield a significant result. The discussion focuses on how changes in the methodology could affect the result to make it more robust. The author is not ready to reject the designed nudges without testing them in a modified experiment as there are indications pointing towards a potential good result after all.
