The insurance sector undertakes a number of important activities such as ensuring sustainable development of economies, fair distribution of resources and sharing of risk. Through these activities, it aims to protect individuals and institutions during possible crisis periods. This study aims to analyze the financial failures of AgeSa Sigorta, Ak Sigorta, Anadolu Anonim Sigorta, Anadolu Hayat ve Emeklilik, Ray Sigorta and Türkiye Sigorta, which are traded on Borsa Istanbul (BIST), in the years 2016-2023. Within the scope of the study, Altman Z score and Fulmer H model were applied and the results were reported. According to the results of the study, the results obtained with the Altman Z score model show that all firms exhibit a successful situation, but according to the results obtained from the Fulmer H model, all firms are in the bankruptcy zone. When the results of the study are compared with the results of the studies in the literature, it can be stated that it contains similar results with the Altman Z score model and in this respect, it provides more accurate results in the performance analysis of the Turkish insurance sector

Engaging Indigenous economy: a selected annotated bibliography of Jon Altman’s writings 1979‒2014

This annotated bibliography aims to summarise many of the themes to which Jon Altman, foundation director of the Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research, has dedicated his career to date. Abstract \u27Engaging Indigenous Economy: A Selected Annotated Bibliography of Jon Altman’s Writings 1979–2014\u27 is published in conjunction with the conference ‘Engaging Indigenous economy: Debating diverse approaches’, convened at the Australian National University, 4–5 September 2014. The publication and conference coincide with Jon Altman’s retirement from the Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research (CAEPR), where he was foundation director from 1990 to 2010. The annotated bibliography aims to summarise many of the themes to which Altman has dedicated his career to date, and is designed to be a navigational tool for paper presenters, conference delegates and others wishing to engage with Altman’s work. The bibliography was written in conversation with Jon Altman and is structured around the six conference themes selected by conveners Kirrily Jordan, Tim Rowse and Will Sanders to reflect Altman’s writings: comparative modern hunter–gatherer studies; economic hybridity and alternate development; employment and labour markets; land rights and native title; sustainable land-based indigenous livelihoods; and neoliberalism or the return of the guardian state? The bibliography has its basis in an earlier publication, The Hybrid Economy Topic Guide, prepared by Susie Russell as an element of the Australian Research Council Discovery project ‘Hybrid economic futures for remote Indigenous Australia: Linking poverty reduction and natural resource management’. In looking to update this topic guide in early 2014, a decision was made to considerably extend its coverage to encompass a far wider selection of Altman’s published research. Given the breadth of Altman’s research over a long career, it has not been possible to include all of his published work; however, the bibliography covers a large proportion of his written contribution. Classification of works according to the conference themes has required judgments, as many publications could be allocated to more than one theme. The authors have sought to address the challenge of some inevitable arbitrary judgment by developing a set of keywords for each annotated item

Activation games in online dating platforms

In this paper we describe a model for the activation level of users in online dating platforms (ODPs). Such popular systems are conceived in order to match individuals from two groups of potential mates. The business of such platforms pivots around the customers' expectancy to get in contact with their future dates: upon the payment of a fee to the platform owner, ODPs provide specific tools to improve reach and visibility. However, ODPs require a critical number of active users in order to sustain their operations (and their business). Customers of the platform trade off on the price for being more visible and attract mates' contacts. A user becomes inactive if he or she is not contacted by others for some time: being contacted by potential mates acts as an activation signal. The aim of our analysis is to propose a game theoretical framework to capture such a complex activation problem in strategic form. We unveil the structure of Nash equilibria and we further derive a Stackelberg formulation. The latter is a hierarchical game where the platform owner aims at maximizing profits while preserving the ODP activity level above a critical epidemic threshold

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

The Cytoscan (TM) model E-II, a new reflectance microscope for intravital microscopy: Comparison with the standard fluorescence method

    No full text
The Cytoscan(TM) Model E-II (Cytometrics Inc., Philadelphia, Pa., USA) is a newly developed instrument which functions as an intravital microscope and is small and easily portable. Through the use of orthogonal polarization spectral (OPS) imaging, the Cytoscan Model E-II delivers images of the microcirculation which are comparable to those achieved with intravital fluorescence videomicroscopy (IFM), but without the use of fluorescent dyes. The purpose of this study was to validate the Cytoscan Model E-II instrument against IFM. The experiments were carried out on striated muscle in the dorsal skinfold chamber of the awake Syrian hamster. The following parameters were measured in identical regions of interest in the same animal under baseline conditions and 0.5 and 2 h after a 4-hour period of pressure-induced ischemia: arteriolar diameter, venular diameter and venular red blood cell velocity. Bland-Altman plots showed good agreement between the two techniques for venular red blood cell velocity. As expected, arteriolar and venular diameters as measured by the Cytoscan were on average 5 mum smaller than the values from IFM, since the Cytoscan measures the red blood cell column width and IFM measures luminal diameter. Thus, OPS imaging can be used to make valid measurements of microvascular diameter and red blood cell velocity in tissues. Copyright (C) 2000 S. Karger AG, Basel

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    No full text
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

An in vitro comparison between two methods of electrical resistance measurement for occlusal caries detection

    No full text
Because of different measurement techniques and the easier design of the CRM prototype, this in vitro study aimed to compare the diagnostic performance and reproducibility of two electrical methods (Electronic Caries Monitor III, ECM and Cariometer 800, CRM) for occlusal caries detection, and to evaluate the effect of staining/ discoloration of fissures on diagnostic performance. Hundred and seventeen third molars with no apparent occlusal cavitation were selected. Six examiners inspected all specimens independently, using the CRM, and a subgroup of 4 using the ECM. Histological validation using a stereomicroscope was performed after hemisectioning. Intra- and interexaminer reproducibility was assessed by Lin's concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) and Bland and Altman analysis. Diagnostic performance parameters included sensitivity (SE), specificity (SP) and area under the ROC curve (A(z)). The CCC yielded an intra- and interexaminer reproducibility of 0.69/0.62 (ECM) and of 0.79/0.74 (CRM). The mean intra- and interexaminer 95% range of measurements (range between Bland and Altman limits of agreement) given in percentages of the instrument reading were 67%/65% for the ECM and 28%/33% for the CRM. A(z) at the D3-4 level was 0.74 (ECM) and 0.78 (CRM). The CRM showed at least equivalent diagnostic performance to the ECM. However, improvement is still desirable. Diagnostic performance appeared to be enhanced in discolored lesions; however, this may be related to sample lesion distribution characteristics. Copyright (C) 2006 S. Karger AG, Basel
