The Genesis of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
abstract: This is a project about medicine and the history of a condition called premenstrual syndrome (PMS), its “discovery” and conceptual development at both scientific and socio-cultural levels. Since it was first mentioned in medical literature, PMS has been explored empirically as a medical condition and conceptually as non-somatic cultural phenomenon. Many attempts have been made to produce scientific, empirical evidence to bolster the theory of PMS as a biological disease. Some non-medical perspectives argue that invoking biology as the cause of PMS medicalizes a natural function of the female reproductive system and shallowly interrogates what is actually a complex bio-psycho-social phenomenon. This thesis questions both sides of this debate in order to reveal how criteria for PMS were categorized despite disagreement surrounding its etiology.
This thesis illustrates how the concept of PMS developed and was informed by the discovery of hormones and the resulting field of endocrinology that provided a framework for conceptualizing PMS. It displays how the development of the medical diagnostic category of PMS developed in tandem with the emergence of the field of endocrinology and was legitimized and effectively medicalized through this connection. The diagnosis of PMS became established though the diagnostic techniques like questionnaires in spite of persistent disagreement over its definition. The thesis shows how these medical concepts and practices legitimated the category of PMS, and how it has become ubiquitous in contemporary culture.Dissertation/ThesisMasters Thesis Biology 201
Ellipse-fitting techniques applied to 2D-PMS raindrop images
An ellipse-fitting technique is introduced in this paper to process the images of raindrops sampled by a 2D-PMS (Particle Measuring Systems, Inc.) probe. Algorithms to estimate size, shape, and orientation parameters of partial raindrop images are presented. This technique is evaluated by fitting full raindrop images and comparing the results with other procedures such as Fourier descriptor and moment descriptor methods. It is also evaluated by applying this procedure to partial raindrop images constructed by truncating the top part or the bottom part of full raindrop images, while at the same time the estimates obtained from the full images are used for comparison against the estimates from partial images. It is shown that the ellipse-fitting technique is a viable tool for processing complete 20-PMS raindrop images, and more importantly, this technique works successfully for processing partial raindrop images. Results of 20-PMS data analysis of side-looking raindrop images collected during the CaPE (Convection and Precipitation/Electrification) field program are presented
Individual influences and social-cultural factors in the occurrence of premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
They had shown to association with the PMS, mothers with PMS, connotation given to the menstruation and the PMS, influence of the group and the media, and expectation of the menarch
Analisa Penggunaan Dioda Reverse Bias Pada Kontraktor PMS PT.PLN (PERSERO) Gardu Induk Martapura
The diode is a component that plays an important role in the world of electronics, its function as a rectifier has played a large role in the development of electricity. Departing from these problems, the author wants to analyze the use of diodes in PMS contactors. In this paper the author will analyze the use of reverse biased diodes on PMS contactors owned by PT. PLN (Persero) Martapura Substation. The use of a reverse bias diode in the PMS contactor aims to minimize the damage that occurs to the contactor when operating during a blackout. The author will make a reverse bias diode design using the Electronics Workbench application. In addition, the application will be used for design simulations that have been made. The design in the form of a simulation will be practiced in physical form so that it can be tested on its function. The test is carried out by comparing the self-induction voltage when the contactor uses a reverse bias diode and when it is not used. To produce a self-induction voltage, there is a certain time span which will be the parameter in the test. After collecting the data, an analysis will be carried out in this test. Based on the data obtained, the authors state that by using a reverse biased diode, the self-induction voltage is more stable, there are no voltage spikes
PMS monitoring study 2017 final report
Prepared for: U. S. Forest Service, Pike and San Isabel national forests, and Comanche and Cimarron national grasslands, South Platte Ranger District.May 2018.February 2018.Includes bibliographical references. In 2000, the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), in cooperation with the Colorado State Forest Service, Denver Water, and other entities, implemented a program of forest thinning treatments to reduce the risk of large fires that could occur where surface fuels have accumulated and dense forest stands have resulted from past fire management activities. To assist in evaluating project effects over the short- and long-term, the USFS and Denver Water sponsored a pilot Hesperia skipper monitoring program for the federally threatened Pawnee montane skipper (PMS) (Hesperia leonardus montana), to evaluate the relative use by skippers of treated and untreated areas. Annual monitoring began in August 2000; this report discusses results of the most recent years monitoring in relation to all previous years
Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) and the Myth of the Irrational Female
King’s chapter begins by describing the historical context of ‘premenstrual’ symptoms, which were first formally described in 1931. She then questions the prioritization of mood-based symptoms in the diagnostic criteria for Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS). King argues that population studies suggest that mood-based symptoms are not the most common nor most disruptive of menstrual changes. She then proposes that the trend of ‘psychologizing’ premenstrual symptoms is influenced by the sexist historical assumption of ‘the myth of the irrational female’—the idea that women, due to their reproductive biology, are pathologically emotional and thus have a reduced capacity for reason. The author concludes by calling for a more integrated and rigorous approach to PMS definitions and research to support people who experience cyclical symptoms, without unintentionally pathologizing the menstrual cycle or stigmatizing an entire gender
Enhancing Volatile Fatty Acid Production during Anaerobic Fermentation of Waste Activated Sludge with Persulfates: Peroxymonosulfate versus Peroxydisulfate
Persulfates ((peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peroxydisulfate (PDS)) can disintegrate waste activated sludge (WAS), but their influence on volatile fatty acid (VFA) production during anaerobic fermentation is largely unclear. Particularly, it is unknown whether persulfates can improve fermentation without any preactivation. This study investigated how the direct addition of PMS and PDS into the fermenter influences VFA production from WAS, and uncovered possible mechanisms of improved VFA production. At the PMS dosage of 1.0 mM/gVS, maximum VFA yield (1025 ± 55 mg COD/L) was observed in 5 days of fermentation, which was 24% higher than that with an equimolar addition of PDS and 132% higher than that without persulfate addition. However, the cost-effectiveness of PMS in enhancing VFA production is lower than that of PDS. The in situ generated hydroxyl and sulfate radicals from persulfates in the fermenter enhanced not only WAS disintegration and solubilization but also the formation of biodegradable substances for acidification. Moreover, the direct addition of persulfates into the fermenter shifted the microbial community toward hydrolysis-acidification such as Clostridium_sensu_stricto_10 and Fonticella. Results of this study also suggest that preactivation is not necessary when persulfates are applied to improve WAS fermentation.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Sanitary Engineerin
HISTORICAL SUBJECT MATTER IN ORAL LYRIC POETRY
The relationship between lyrical oral poems and historial events is discussed. As contents of lyric oral poems, historical events are transformed according to poetical pattern. So transformed, they lose connection with the real historical data. The author concludes that it is necessary to distinguish the poetical pattern from the historical fact, and that the lyric poem has to be regarded as a folkloristic fact. Such a fact can only indirectly be considered as a testimony of historical data
Severity of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and its related factors in students of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences
Background and aimPremenstrual syndrome (PMS) is one or more symptoms from a great combination of physical, psychological and behavioral symptoms, occurring in 70%-90%of women at childbearing age. 95% of women suffer from mild symptoms of PMS while, in 3%-10%, the symptoms are severe and disabling. The aim of this study was identify the severity of PMS and its related factors in students of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences & Health Services,.
