Tropical ginsberg: the resonance of Allen Ginsberg on the Tropicália

The corpora are the poems "Howl" (1956), "America" (1956), "Supermarket in California" (1955), "Sunflower Sutra" (1955), "Song" (1954), and "Wild Orphan" (1952), written by Allen Ginsberg, and the songs "Batmacumba" (1968), composed by Caetano Veloso, and Gilberto Gil, "Baby" (1968), composed by Caetano Veloso, "Geléia Geral" (1968), composed by Gilberto Gil and Torquato Neto, "Alegria, Alegria" (1967), composed by Caetano Veloso, and "Domingo no Parque" (1967), composed by Gilberto Gil. The main theoretical and critical parameters of this research include: Mikhail Bakhtin and his reflections on intertextuality; James J. Farrell, who believes that the American counterculture began with the Beats; Claudio Willer, who stresses the importance of Allen Ginsberg to the Beat movement, as well as to the birth of the American counterculture; Christopher Dunn, who emphasizes the historical, social, and political relevance of the Tropicália; and Celso Favaretto, who discusses in depth the complexity of most of the Tropicália songs. Based on such parameters, this research suggests that the life and work of Allen Ginsberg had great resonance over the creation of the Tropicália.Através de uma relação dialógica entre poesia e letras de música e o contexto sócio-político que circundava tais textos, este estudo discute a ressonância que o poeta Norte Americano, Allen Ginsberg, teve sobre o movimento musical Brasileiro, a Tropicália. A corpora são os poemas "Howl" (1956), "America" (1956), "Supermarket in California" (1955), "Sunflower Sutra" (1955), "Song" (1954), e "Wild Orphan" (1952), escritos por Allen Ginsberg, e as músicas "Batmacumba" (1968), composta por Caetano Veloso, e Gilberto Gil, "Baby" (1968), composta por Caetano Veloso, "Geléia Geral" (1968), composta por Gilberto Gil e Torquato Neto, "Alegria, Alegria" (1967), composta por Caetano Veloso, e "Domingo no Parque" (1967), composta por Gilberto Gil. New record of Dotilla intermedia (Brachyura: Ocypodidae) from Thailand
The identity of a dotillid intertidal crab from exposed sandy beaches within the Laem Son National Park along the Andaman Coast in Thailand was investigated. The species was identified as Dotilla intermedia De Man, 1888, which represents the first record of this species from Thailand. A description of the species is provided and a lectotype is designated from the type series
The historical imagination of Christopher Dawson
Christopher Dawson (1889-1970) was one of his generation's most
important historians and religious thinkers, and was a significant
influence on many contemporaries including T.S. Eliot, C.S. Lewis,
and Russell Kirk. This dissertation is a study of his most
fundamental ideas concerning history and culture.
Chapter one examines Dawson’s sociological view of history.
Convinced that history was more than a scientific enterprise, he
believed that the true historian is one who reaches beyond the
material world to understand the essence of history’s dynamics. In
this way, the world can be conceptualized as a united whole,
separated by regional differences as a result of environment, race,
material, psychological, and religious factors. Dawson believed
that the political histories of the past several centuries failed to
grasp the undercurrents of historical change, and that the best way
to understand the past is to appreciate culture as an expression of
primeval religious traditions.
Chapter two treats Dawson’s understanding of progress. Dawson
was convinced that progress had become the “working-religion” of our
age. This secular faith, founded on scientific rationalism, first
pledged to fix the material failures of Western culture, but
unwittingly eroded its faith in God, and eventually, its moral
fiber. Dawson believed that true progress was progress of the soul
in its ordering toward the Creator.
Chapter three is a study of Dawson’s Christian, and more
specifically, his Catholic beliefs. Informed by religion, his
historical and cultural visions are not dogmatic, nor are they
polemical. He conceived of history as the unfolding of a divine
economy in the temporal world. Although Dawson is a proponent of
Roman Catholicism, his scholarship is an objective treatment of
history shaped by an undisguised, Christian worldview.
Additionally, the appendix is an introduction to Dawson’s life
and the circumstances surrounding his conversion to Roman
Catholicism. Particular attention is paid to the development of his
moral and historical imagination — both of which became intertwined to
form the basis of all of his scholarship
Performance of gravel aggregates in superpave mixes with 100/95 angularity
The current aggregate requirement for aggregate angularity that the NYSDOT requires for their Superpave Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) is 100/98. With this requirement, many of the gravel quarries in New York State cannot meet that specification. As a result, quarries that are further away from the job site have to transport the aggregates which in turn increases the cost of construction. This paper investigates a multitude of test methods to determine whether the NYSDOT can further lower their Superpave aggregate angularity requirement. Ecology of the intertidal crab Dotilla intermedia from tsunami-impacted beaches in Thailand
Crabs of the genus Dotilla are ecologically important members of intertidal sandy shorecommunities. Exposed sandy shores represent one of the main habitat types along the coast of theLaem Son National Park in Thailand, and Dotilla sp. is the dominant macrofaunal species onthese beaches, occurring in immense numbers. Despite their importance as a key member of thefaunal community on these beaches, little is known about the ecology of Dotilla crabs in theLaem Son. Taxonomic investigations identified the Dotilla crabs present on the exposed oceanicbeaches in the Laem Son to be D. intermedia. This represents the first time that D. intermedia hasbeen recorded from Thailand. Dotilla intermedia inhabits a very well defined zone on the sandybeaches, and the factors underlying these zonation patterns were examined. The gradient of thebeach was correlated to the height at which the boundaries of the Dotilla zone occurred, withphysical factors associated with the beach gradient driving the distribution of D. intermedia onthe beach. The upper limit of the Dotilla zone was controlled by the total water content of thesediment, with D. intermedia absent from areas with less than 15% total water content. Tidalinfluences defined the lower boundary of the Dotilla zone, with crabs requiring an area with aminimum exposure time between tidal immersions of 4-5 hours to feed on the sediment. Withinthe Dotilla zone, size segregation was observed; larger crabs occurred higher on the shore, andsmall crabs lower down. The sandy shores of the Laem Son were heavily impacted by thetsunami of 26th December 2004, which effectively destroyed the populations of D. intermedia onthe beaches. However, by April 2005 D. intermedia was present again on the beaches. Atemporal population genetic study was undertaken to investigate the impact of extinction andrecolonisation on the genetic variation of a population. Genetic variation in mtDNA markers wasfound to decrease over time, matching the predictions of mathematical models concerning theeffect of bottlenecking events on genetic diversity within populations. The impact of the tsunamion D. intermedia is discussed further in light of the ecological and molecular data produced inthis thesis

Culture is the result of, and is itself expressed through, religion, language, institutions and history. Culture is persistent but does change slowly over time. Religion is either one manifestation of culture or itself shapes that culture. This chapter discusses recent contributions to the economics of culture and religion, a literature which was instigated by economic historians and has long been dominated by their work. Its author especially focuses on the role of culture and religion in engendering industrial progress and institutional change
Epigenetic regulation and transcription factor programming enhances neurogenesis in neural stem cells
In this thesis, we questioned how neuronal and glial phenotypes become specialized. Epigenetic chromatin modifiers and transcription factors were investigated on their roles in programming and maintaining neural lineage restriction. A relatively homogeneous population of cells was generated by deriving immortalizing neural clones from embryonic rat forebrains. Three phenotypes; neuronal, glial and multipotential (GE6, GE2, CTX8), provided contrasting lineages to probe the factors responsible for shaping cell fate. One particular clone, GE6, differentiated into a functional inhibitory like interneuron. Gene expression analysis showed several genes such as Ascl1, Dlx1, Dlx5, may be responsible for the interneuronal phenotype. Epigenetic regulation through histone modifications is believed to be an essential component within the developing nervous system, ultimately affecting cell fate. Testing chromatin signatures on specific neural genes with permissive and repressive histone “marks” shows that chromatin state in undifferentiated precursors correlates with current and predicts downstream gene expression. These results suggest that cell fate may already be predetermined. Furthermore, ChIP sequencing reveals global differences between the representative clones. Extrinsic growth factors, such as BMP2 promotes the neuronal and glial phenotypes in the multipotential cell CTX8. BMP2 asserts its phenotypic response in part by regulating global acetylation enrichment in specific neural gene networks, providing a mechanism to promote and maintain cell fate. Directly altering chromatin marks using a histone deacetylase inhibitor, valproic acid (VPA), globally acetylates the chromatin of CTX8 cells and enhances neurogenesis. VPA treatment was found to also maintain or increase acetylation in specific neuronal genes, such as Ascl1. In addition, several microRNAs thought to play a role in neurogenesis were also epigenetically regulated after VPA treatment. Finally, through the combination of gene expression and epigenetic analyses, direct programming through exogenous expression of Ascl1, Dlx1 and Dlx5 enhanced neurogenesis in CTX8. Gene expression and epigenetic signature mapping provides us with a deeper understanding of how lineage restriction occurs. Learning the programming rules will assist in directing homogeneous populations of neuronal cells to further probe the mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases.Ph. Hundreds of variants clustered in genomic loci and biological pathways affect human height
Most common human traits and diseases have a polygenic pattern of inheritance: DNA sequence variants at many genetic loci influence the phenotype. Genome-wide association (GWA) studies have identified more than 600 variants associated with human traits(1), but these typically explain small fractions of phenotypic variation, raising questions about the use of further studies. Here, using 183,727 individuals, we show that hundreds of genetic variants, in at least 180 loci, influence adult height, a highly heritable and classic polygenic trait(2,3). The large number of loci reveals patterns with important implications for genetic studies of common human diseases and traits. First, the 180 loci are not random, but instead are enriched for genes that are connected in biological pathways (P = 0.016) and that underlie skeletal growth defects (P<0.001). Second, the likely causal gene is often located near the most strongly associated variant: in 13 of 21 loci containing a known skeletal growth gene, that gene was closest to the associated variant. Third, at least 19 loci have multiple independently associated variants, suggesting that allelic heterogeneity is a frequent feature of polygenic traits, that comprehensive explorations of already-discovered loci should discover additional variants and that an appreciable fraction of associated loci may have been identified. Fourth, associated variants are enriched for likely functional effects on genes, being over-represented among variants that alter amino-acid structure of proteins and expression levels of nearby genes. Our data explain approximately 10% of the phenotypic variation in height, and we estimate that unidentified common variants of similar effect sizes would increase this figure to approximately 16% of phenotypic variation (approximately 20% of heritable variation). Although additional approaches are needed to dissect the genetic architecture of polygenic human traits fully, our findings indicate that GWA studies can identify large numbers of loci that implicate biologically relevant genes and pathways
Heritability and Linkage Analysis of Appendicitis Utilizing Age at Onset
Appendicitis usually afflicts the young, but there is a large tail in the distribution of onset age. The genetics of this disease are still not well understood. A heritability analysis and genome wide linkage analysis of a large twin dataset was undertaken. Treating age of onset of appendicitis as a censored survival trait revealed a heritability of 0.21, and found evidence of linkage to Chromosome 1p37.3.
