Aisha ‘Abd al-Rahman (Bint al-Shati’) (d.1998) and her approach to tafsir : the journey of an Egyptian exegete from hermeneutics to humanity

In the last few decades, Bint al-Shati’s literary approach to the exegesis of the Qur’an has received some scholarly attention particularly directed at the exegetical procedures she developed under the tutelage of Amin al-Khuli for reading the Qur’an as a literary text. This paper aims to re-examine Bint al-Shati’s exegetical oeuvre with an interest in the hermeneutic vision that informed and shaped her method. A close reading of her main exegetical work Al-Tafsir al-Bayani li’l-Qur’an reveals that three hermeneutic questions are of primary significance to her tafsir: i) Authority to interpret the text, ii) the linguisticality of understanding, and iii) the applicability of the interpretation. This paper mainly focuses on the first question in light of her approach to traditional tafsir. It becomes evident that while Bint al-Shati’ relies on modern methods of thematic and philological analysis of Qur’anic meaning, traditional tafsir is never absent from her exegetical texts as it is in other modern interpretations of the Qur’an. The paper goes on to show that the textual presence of traditional tafsir serves textual as well as transtextual functions beyond refuting the validity of past constructions of Qur’anic meaning. Bint al-Shati’ is, in fact, deliberately placing herself ‘within’ in order to construct her exegetical authority as extending from a long and well-established tradition, to legitimate her modern reading as premised on knowledge of past readings, and to ultimately transcend them to allow a new reading to emerge. Bint al-Shati’s approach to traditional tafsir is further explored in the light of the tension between modernity and tradition which characterises her intellectualism, as well as in the context of her personal journey as a woman attempting to establish an authoritative exegetical voice in a male-dominated tradition. In the final section, the paper makes some observations on Bint al-Shati’s stance on the primacy of a linguistic approach for understanding the Qur’an, a stance which diverges from that of her teacher Amin al-Khuli who emphasized history above language in his Manahij al-Tajdid. The emphasis on linguisticality develops in Bint al-Shati’ into a theology of humanity in which women are equally entrusted with understanding the Qur’an. This contribution of her work reveals that her reading of the Qur’an has been motivated not only by an interest in its literary inimitability but also by a concern for social application

Bint Al-Shati’ Critical Thematic Method and the Difference with Others

Bint al-Shaṭi' is one of the few modern Muslim female figures who developed Islamic scholarship, especially interpretation of the Al-Qur'an. Issa J Boullata praised the Bint al-Shaṭi’ method as a modern interpretation method that has many advantages. The first objective is to identify the background and principles of the Bint al-Shati' method of interpretation. The second objective, to find the peculiarities and advantages of the method compared to others. The third objective is to find important things as a logical consequence of the method of interpretation. This study uses content analysis and comparison method. The author calls the Bint al-Shati' method the term critical thematic method, developed based on the weaknesses of the classical interpretation method. This method has its uniqueness even though it was adopted from the method of interpretation of Amin al-Khuli. The Bint al-Shati’ method, compared to several other methods, appears to be more complete and relatively more guarantees that the Qur'an is able to speak for itself. In the end, the principle of no synonym in the Bint al-Shati' method can strengthen the dictum of Abu Abbas Tsa'lab, can provide certainty about the stages of a legal process, and can strengthen certain theological understanding

Xanthohumol protects against renal ischaemia reperfusion (I/R) injury by scavenging ROS and inhibition of JAK-2/STAT-3 inflammatory pathway

AbstractRecent evidence has shown that reactive oxygen species (ROS), inflammation and the activation of JAK/STAT signalling are major pathways in the induction and progression of renal ischaemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. The protective effect of Xanthohumol (XN) against I/R induced renal injury has not been investigated. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the in vivo effect of XN against renal I/R injury. The rats used in this study were divided into 2 main groups of either 1) sham-operated or 2) subjected to renal I/R, in which each group was further divided into 2 subgroups: treated with oral administration of normal saline or XN (1mg/kg) for 28 days. Renal function, histology, markers and expression levels of oxidative stress, inflammation and apoptosis were examined. The expression levels of the activated JAK-2/Stat-3 signalling pathway were also assessed. XN treatment in the sham group resulted in a normal response, as seen in the sham operated as control group. However, XN significantly improved renal function and attenuated histological changes by reducing the levels of oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation, inflammatory markers, adhesive molecules and the activity of myeloperoxidase (MPO). Concomitantly, reduced expression levels of activated caspase with a parallel decrease in JAK-1/Stat-3 phosphorylation were also noticed. In conclusion, these findings show, for the first time, a protective effect of XN against renal I/R injury, and the mechanisms of protection involve ROS scavenging and an anti-inflammatory effect mediated by the inhibition of the JAK-2/STAT-3 pathway

AbstractHexavalent chromium [Cr (VI)]-mediated oxidative stress causes severe hepatic toxicity. This study aims to investigate the protective role of oral vitamin E administration against potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7)-induced hepatotoxicity. Adult male rats (Rattus norvegicus, n=24) weighing 150–180g were used and divided into 4 groups (n=6 per group): the control group received distilled water; control+vitamin E group received vitamin E (100mg/kg b.w.); Cr group received K2Cr2O7 (8mg/kg b.w.), and Cr+vitamin E group received K2Cr2O7+vitamin E. All treatments were administered orally on a daily basis for 6weeks.There was a significant accumulation of Cr in the livers of the Cr group compared with the control group. In addition, exposure to K2Cr2O7 induced significant increases in the level of thiobarbituric-reactive substances (TBARS) and significant decreases in glutathione (GSH) content and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in the Cr group compared with the control group. Moreover, livers of the Cr group showed major histological alterations, such as severe necrosis, increased lymphocytic infiltration, and a significant decrease in the DNA content. Oral vitamin E administration concomitant with K2Cr2O7 ameliorated all these changes and resulted in normal hepatic histological and cellular contents. In conclusion, oral vitamin E administration has a hepatoprotective role against K2Cr2O7-induced hepatotoxicity in rats
