‘Cross-language speech perception: lexical stress in Spanish with Italian and Francophone subjects’
No full textThe present work analyses the perception of lexical stress in Spanish by Italian and French native speakers, trying to take into account the differences between Italian, French and Spanish stress systems both in perception and in production.
We have designed two perception experiments using a similar procedure of other works with native subjects (Llisterri et al., 2005; Alfano, 2006) and non-native subjects (Alfano et al., 2007). Three groups of Italian subjects and two groups of Francophone subjects, divided according to their competence in Spanish, have participated in the experiments performing an identification test. Our results indicate that native language influence is not sufficient to explain the perception process in a foreign language, suggesting that non-native subjects use not only purely “linguistic” perception strategies, since their choices seem to be also determined by psycholinguistic factors and by acoustic properties of the signal

No full textA three-dimensional (3D) two-scale Cohesive Zone Model (CZM), which is based on a multiplane approach and couples damage with friction and interlocking, is presented for analysing crack propagation in quasi-brittle materials along structural interfaces where formation of cracks is expected. The main idea of the 3D multiplane formulation herein exploited is to describe the asperities of the interface in the form of periodic patterns of inclined planes, denominated Representative Interface Elements (RIE). The interaction within each plane of the RIE is governed by the interface formulation proposed by Alfano and Sacco in earlier work. After reporting details of the formulation and of its algorithmic implementation, the sensitivity of the macroscopic mechanical response to the specific selection of the RIE is analysed and reported with a general numerical assessment of the 3D interface mechanical response to monotonic and cyclic loading histories. A fundamental issue addressed in this paper is the identification of optimal RIE patterns with a minimum number of planes capable of providing isotropic in-plane behaviour in response to confined slip tests
The role of political competition in the link between electoral systems and corruption: an extension
No full textThis work provides an extension to an international context of the analysis made by Alfano, Baraldi and Cantabene (2013) on the role of political competition as a channel through which electoral systems affect corruption. Our result conflicts with that found by empirical literature on that topic that makes plurality rules the most virtuous in terms of corruption. Political scientists must be cautious in designing the degree of proportionality of electoral rules without take into account the variation in political competition that follows
