Data-driven methodologies for decision making in engineering design

    No full text
In the product development process, customer needs are essential to develop the product concepts. These concepts are crucial because the subsequent stages in the process are dependent on the selected concepts. Customer needs are conventionally gathered via survey-based methods, which may require extensive cost to conduct. Along with the massive growth of internet, an alternative to those survey-based methods emerges. Customer needs, as well as other insights about the customers, may be inferred from the opinions, feedbacks, or expectations that customers express in various online channels including online customer reviews. However, the volume and the generating velocity of the online customer review data surpass people's ability to analyze them in a reasonable time. Therefore, in order to utilize online reviews for supporting product designers in decision making, this work proposes methodologies that utilize Natural Language Processing tools, machine learning algorithms, and statistical models. In particular, the methodologies are proposed to support product designers in three specific aspects. First, a methodology is proposed to automatically identify product features that are discussed in the customer reviews as well as their corresponding sentiments. The particular product features that are significantly related to sales rank should become the focus of product designers when considering improvements of the existing product. Second, a novel approach to constructing the choice sets in the absence of both socio-demographic and the actual choice set data is proposed. The choice models that use the proposed choice sets are shown to have better predictive ability than the baseline, i.e., using random choice sets. The choice models with higher predictive ability are useful for product designers to perform demand estimation more accurately. Finally, a methodology is proposed to automatically identify product usage contexts from online customer reviews. Understanding the actual usage contexts is important because it may explain the differences in customer needs, the required design targets, and product preferences. In this work, the identified usage contexts are further complemented by their corresponding aspect sentiments. For product designers, the results enable them to understand customer experience regarding the usage contexts, including the contexts that may not be originally intended by the designers.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2021-08-01The student, Dedy Suryadi, accepted the attached license on 2019-07-10 at 17:52.The student, Dedy Suryadi, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2019-07-10 at 18:12.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2019-07-11 at 09:38.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #14253 on 2019-11-26 at 14:03:45Made available in DSpace on 2019-11-26T20:59:45Z (GMT). Pulo Samosir Nauli " , under the guidance of Mr. Iwa Garniwa , SE , M.Sc. This researh aims to find out how much the leadership style that applied in the CV . Pulo Samosir Nauli influence on Employee Productivity. The object of this research were all employees of the CV . Pulo Samosir Nauli . The research method that is used by the author in the conduct of this research is descriptive method . Descriptive method is a method of seeing and describing the state of the company in a systematic , factual and accurate by collecting data from companies , analyze it and finally take a conclusion . To analyze the data that the author get from the company , then the next, the author do a statistical calculations by using SPSS . In general, it can be concluded that the most dominant leadership style on the CV . Pulo Samosir Nauli is a participation leadership style. Employee Productivity in CV . Pulo Samosir Nauli can be categorized as high, demonstrated by 3,55 average value which is within 3.40 to 4.19 interval . The Leadership Style on the CV . Pulo Samosir Nauli have a significant impact on Employee Productivity . This fact can be evidenced by the results of the hypothesis test , 2.65 > 1.701 ( t count > t table ) , which means that Ho is rejected and Ha accepted . So the hypotheses in the Chapter I " If the leadership style that is applied to companies favored by the employee , the Employee Productivity will be high " was acceptable . Besides that, determination coefficient of The Leadership Styles againt Employee Productivity was 20.07 % , while 79,93% remaining was influenced by other factors, with 44,8% relationship level ( rs ) between the two variables, which means that the variable of leadership style and the variable of Employee Productivity has a fairly strong relationship

Power Relations and Social Classes in Pengakuan Pariyem by Linus Suryadi AG: Reflection of Masculine Ideology

    No full text
The study aims to explore power relations and social classes as the reflections of the masculine ideology of the author in the novel Pengakuan Pariyem by Linus Suryadi AG. The theories implemented in the study are van Dijk’s power relations and social classes theory and Connell’s masculinity theory. The study is qualitative descriptive and applies the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) method, used to dismantle the ideology that is produced and reproduced through the language within the novel. The research data are lingual units that indicate power relations and social classes which simultaneously reflect the notion of masculinity.  The results of the study are as follows. First, Pariyem as the central character in the novel lives within a hierarchical and dualistic Javanese society. Her submission as the babu (housemaid) of a priyayi (noble) family does not only lead Pariyem to be dominated symbolically, but also legitimizes the priyayi (aristocrats) power over wong cilik (commoners).  It is reinforced by the representations of the priyayis’ world views in terms of culture, aristocracy, bureaucracy, and education orientation. It shows that priyayis are culturally dominant. Secondly, since Pariyem is a character created by a male author, her behaviors and actions reflect the ideology of masculinity. Rather than voicing women, the power relations that Pariyem experiences through the events constructed in the novel show that she embodies the masculine ideology, or masculinity.

Prediction of flow separation noise in "Aeroacoustics research in Europe: The CEAS-ASC report on 2019 highlights"

    No full text
Local and intermittent changes in wind speed may induce a higher angle of attack of a wind turbine rotor blade leading to flow separation. The effect of flow separation to the surface pressure fluctuation (SPF) and trailing-edge noise (TEN) was measured in the Acoustic Wind-tunnel Braunschweig using a directional microphone and miniature surface pressure sensors. The measurements were conducted using a DU96-W-180 rotor blade profile at pre-stall angles of attack [69]. Because of the limitation of the directional microphone, the maximum sound pressure level at a frequency lower than 1 kHz was not attainable. Therefore, a predictive model of the TEN using the surface pressure fluctuations is needed

Prediction of trailing-edge noise for separated turbulent boundary layers

This paper presents a semi-empirical low-order prediction of the trailing-edge noise of separated turbulent boundary layers. The prediction focuses on obtaining the low-frequency spectral peak of the far-field sound pressure level by modeling the measured wavenumber- frequency spectrum using regression analysis and integrating that spec- trum in the manner of Howe’s radiation model. Surface pressure fluc- tuations upstream of the trailing-edge of a DU96-W-180 blade section were measured using miniature pressure transducers, and the trailing- edge noise was measured using a directional microphone. The prediction showed that the far-field sound pressure level reached its maximum below the frequency limit of the directional microphone measurement, between 400 Hz - 500 Hz depending on the freestream velocity and the predicted spectrum varied between ±0.5 dB given the inaccuracies of the regression model

Perempuan dan Spiritualitasnya Dalam Perspektif Hadis

It has been widely known that Islam is often portrayed as a religion which marginalizes and discriminates against women. This image comes from gender-biased practices of Muslim communities in some parts of the world. The author argues that if we go deeply to the authentic teachings of Islam, be they ones based on the Qur\u27an and Hadith, we will certainly find many riwayah that promote equality between men and women. With regard to the issue of spirituality, this article focuses on the hadith perspective, and concludes that the Prophet Muhammad had indeed provided wide space for women (as well as mean) to exercise spirituality in order to attain highest state of purity in the eyes of Allah. Both in doctrinal and practical level never did the Prophet single out one sex against the other. There is no proof whatsoever that the Prophet discriminated women from engagi,ng in spirituality

Assessment of the effect of the reclamation of acid sulphate soil for agricultural development in Vietnam

    No full text
Vietnam is an agricultural country where rice is the main crop cultivated in the Red river delta in the North and in the Mekong delta in the South. Both deltas refer to lowland. However, the degree of development is clearly different between the two deltas. In the Red river delta, the dike system as well as the canal networks have been constructed. Flood is almost controlled. Canal networks have been excavated to supply water to the fields or to evacuate drainage water out of the areas of interest. Meanwhile, there are no dikes in the Mekong delta. This results in flooding every year with a duration of about two months and causing damages to the local people. Canal networks are poor, 5 m/ha on average. Field canals are rarely found in practice. The other constraint for agricultural development is the problem of acid sulphate soil (ASS). This type of soil accounts for a big portion of the total area of the Mekong delta, 1.6 million ha out of 3.9 million ha. Under the pressure of the increasing population growth and the requirement on rice production attention is given to the development of the Mekong delta. Actual and future problems deals with a flood control and soil and water management on ASS. To contribute to the solution of these problems the Plain of Reeds is studied in this thesis. The study focuses on: - development of criteria for dike design and technical specifications for drainage which can be applied in planning, design and construction; - analysis and assessment of possibilities of removal of toxic elements from the potential acid sulphate soil. To reach the objectives mentioned above an analysis of available data has been carried out and three simulation models have been used: the simulation model for acid sulphate soil (SMASS) to predict the duration of land reclamation and to determine strategies of soil and water management; the simulation model for one dimensional unsteady flow in channel systems (DUFLOW) for flood analysis, canal design and water management; and the geographical information system (GIS) for planning activities. The analysis and simulation results show that submerged dikes designed for a return period (T = 3 years) and open drainage systems are appropriate under conditions of the Mekong delta. To enhance the land reclamation and water management a ground water table at 0.2 m-surface is considered as appropriate. Canal networks should be improved to increase the discharge capacity. Water control structures should be constructed to prevent a backwater flow and salt water intrusion under tidal conditions. In addition the GIS shows that the layout of existing canal networks is reasonable. It is possible to lay-out irrigation and drainage canals separately. The reclamation of acid sulphate soils for agricultural development is possible by proper water management measures. Combination of data analysis with the simulation models can deliver more or less the the required information to enable policy makers and decision makers to take proper decisions. However, a study on dynamics of acid sulphate soil and consequences due to reclamation of acid sulphate soils are necessary and recommended to be carried out

This report intends to contribute to the upgrading of the hydraulic infrastructive in existing lowland schemes, where water quality (acidity) problems occur. A summary of the contents of this report is given below: Chapter II presents an overview of the already implemented lowland schemes in Indonesia and describes some alternatives for lmproving the Baramai-Seluang-Belawang-Muhur unit. Chapter VII covers a cost-benefit analysis for this intepretation. These data concern hydrometry, geometry and acidity. Chapter IV discusses the set up of an unsteady flow model, which is based on the PENPAS programme. This is foliowed by the scherr.atization of the study area, (defining nodes, branches, boundary conditi.ons and init ia l conditions), the calibrations and the verification of the rnodels, based on field data. This chapter is co mple t ed by the presentation of the results and an analysis of the alternatives. Chapter V covers the interpretation of the results. Furthermore each alternative is discussed. From the computational results it can be concluded that the convective transport in the system is very dominant. By introducing the flushing canal without any regulatin g structure, it can create only very limited net outflow for each of the secondaries. It does nat give signif.icant d.ifferences between the system without flushing canal and with flushing canal (bath with improved tertiary canals) or with interupted flushing canal. So, in order to have a better flushing effect, a system with a larger net outflow (wider secondary caoals or with a regulating structure) is needed. This idea (wider secondary canals) can be applied for the secondary left of Barambai and the secondary of Seluang. For the wet season condition it wil! give an improved circulation in the system, but unfortunately for the dry season condition, a deadlock problem will occur in two of the secondary canals (the Barambai right and Muhur). So, in these canals sedimentation may occur besides poor refreshment of the canal water. To avoid this problem, a regulating structure must be introduced for example at the end of those secondary canals. Then an optimalization study must be carried out in order to have an optima! salution for a water management strategy. Chapter VI discusses erosion and sedimentation problems in the canal system, by means of sourees of sediments and proteetion works against the local scouring. Chapter VII covers a cost benefit analysis for this upgrading work based on the internal rate o f retu rn of 15%. (RUN 04). Chapter VIII contains the conclusions and recommendations for impravement of the water mana ge ment system of the Barambai-Seluang-Belawang-Muhur unit in particular, and for new lowland development and other upgrading actlvities in general. References are given after chapter VIII. Annex 1 briefly describes the theoretica! background of long waves and the formulae used for calculation of transport of dissolved matter. Annex 2 describes the PENPAS computer program and its facilities. Annex 3 describes about Hydraulic Levelling in Swampy Areas which was also presented during the Third Congress of the Asian and Pacific Regional Devision (APD) of the IAHR (August 1982, Bandung, Indonesia). Annex 4 gives examples of the input and output files of the alternative Run04. Annex 5 presents Hjulstrom's graph related to theerosion and deposition of the particles
