OCR Applied for Identification of Vehicles with Irregular Documentation Using IoT

    No full text
Given the lack of investments in surveillance in remote places, this paper presents a prototype that identifies vehicles in irregular conditions, notifying a group of people, such as a network of neighbors, through a low-cost embedded system based on the Internet of things (IoT). The developed prototype allows the visualization of the location, date and time of the event, and vehicle information such as license plate, make, model, color, city, state, passenger capacity and restrictions. It also offers a responsive interface in two languages: Portuguese and English. The proposed device addresses technical concepts pertinent to image processing such as binarization, analysis of possible characters on the plate, plate border location, perspective transformation, character segmentation, optical character recognition (OCR) and post-processing. The embedded system is based on a Raspberry having support to GPS, solar panels, communication via 3G modem, wi-fi, camera and motion sensors. Tests were performed regarding the vehicle’s positioning and the percentage of assertiveness in image processing, where the vehicles are at different angles, speeds and distances. The prototype can be a viable alternative because the results were satisfactory concerning the recognition of the license plates, mobility and autonomy

The translation cycles of Mário Faustino: from arte-literatura to poesia-experiência

This work has as its goal analyzing how the intertextuality of the writers T. S. Eliot, James Joyce, Robert Stock, Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman and Ezra Pound, occurs in the literary work of Mario Faustino. According to Bosi (1994) and Benedito Nunes (1985), the poetry of Faustino results of the various authors that he read in different moments, as in: Mallarme, Yeats, Rilke, cummings, Joyce and Pound, From Pound he used the motto “make it new”. The motto of Pound takes back directly or indirectly the voice of other authors in some of Faustino's poems. This fact was always taken as practical confirmations. That’s how we defined some parameters to choose which authors would be studied: We are going to use only Anglophone authors, and among them, only authors that Faustino translated in some literary supplement and in one magazine. Going from these points, the authors were divided in two cycles: The North cycle that contains the Art-Literature supplement and the North magazine; the Southeast that contains the Poetry-Experience supplement. In both cycles, we try to demonstrate how the author’s presences are felt in Faustino's works, by means of the creations of new poems based by the poems of Anglophone authors or by means of the incorporations of elements that define the characteristics of a single Anglophone author. In this work it is presented some considerations according to: Chaves (1986) Kristeva (1974) e Bakhtin (2003; 2006), Santiago (1978), Nunes (1985; 1986; 1997; 2009) e Campos (1977; 1992).According to Compagnon (2007) we can notice the reconstruction of the words. In this case, In this case, in the analyzes of the translations made by Faustino and his own work in which each step is a bond of an immense plot that links this text to other read texts and that were “cut out”, that are manipulated by one person at the same time author and reader (Faustino). This way the author/ reader, has practice working on quoting, that means, retell what was told by others.FAPESPA - Fundação Amazônia de Amparo a Estudos e PesquisasO presente trabalho tem como objetivo geral analisar como ocorre a intertextualidade dos escritores T. S. Eliot, James Joyce, Robert Stock, Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman e Ezra Pound, na obra de Mário Faustino.

This article analyses the discursive heterogeneity that characterizes the travel books of two Latin American writers of the nineteenth century, the Argentinian Domingo Faustino Sarmiento and the Mexican Justo Sierra O’Reilly. The author looks into the complex context of the production of their books and analyze in each case the different discourses: essay, narrative and historical. From this study it is concluded that the discursive heterogeneity is an appropriation of the travel genre in response to their contexts and political ideals.

The Routledge Handbook of Grassroots Climate Activism

    No full text
The Routledge Handbook of Grassroots Climate Activism introduces contemporary forms of grassroots climate activism from around the world through the lenses of a variety of academic disciplines, methodologies, and perspectives. Focusing on bottom-up case studies, it showcases innovative and creative approaches, as well as the knowledge of those working towards swift decarbonisation, just transitions, and climate justice. Grassroots climate activism presents a rich body of material to be studied not only by anthropologists, sociologists, geographers, and political scientists but also by scholars in the humanities and the creative arts. This timely handbook explores climate activism across six continents, and it provides perspectives from climate activists themselves. The authors interrogate a range of key questions: what forms of mobilisation, organisation, and practice constitute grassroots climate activism, and how have these changed over the last decade? What are the boundaries of the climate movement and how does it interact with, or differ from, other social movements? How do activists engage with the moral dimensions of the climate crisis? How do grassroots engagements with climate struggles give shape to plural, site-specific, but nonetheless interconnected, forms of climate activism? What tools do climate activists use to create functioning and effective local, national, and transnational networks? How has climate activism been impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic? What is the relationship between critical scholarship and climate activism? What methodologies are particularly effective for studying climate activism, and why? This handbook aims to inspire others to devote more attention to grassroots climate activism. It brings together established and up-and-coming scholars, scholar-activists, and practitioners who present novel, cutting-edge research and new findings exploring current developments in different parts of the world. This book will be of particular interest to students and scholars of climate activism, climate solutions, climate and society, human-environmental crises, grassroots activism, and social movements. It will also be of interest to practitioners involved in climate action and to all those who are ready to launch their own grassroots initiatives, or support one of the many already underway

    No full text
This research is aimed at analyzing Mário Faustino’s poetry, to observe its insert in the modern milieu, mainly through its incorporation of elements from mythic discourse. From the point of view of his reinterpretation of classic myth – gathering of collective thought – the author expresses his feelings about the time he lives in, and succeeds in determining a lyric that assembles intimism and society’s analysis. The present work observes, from that focalization, the treatment which the poet dispenses to his major themes, and still, his search for revitalization in poetry. For this purpose, this work investigates Faustino’s poems and his essays about poetry, pursuing to find in his critical texts, some indication of his creative process. Considering the limits of thematic analysis, this research aims to accomplish an interpretative-descriptive mode, consulting books, magazines, newspapers, academic papers and periodical publications on electronic ambience, as well as, personally interviewing the main interpreter of the poet’s work, Benedito Nunes, and his only biographer, Lilia Silvestre Chaves. The theoretical bases are supported by the studies about modern poetry, from Walter Benjamin, Hugo Friedrich, Theodor Adorno and Alfredo Bosi; the research about poets’ craft, from João Cabral de Melo Neto and T. S. Eliot; the writings about literary myths, from Pierre Brunel e Pierre Grimal; and the studies from Benedito Nunes about Mário Faustino’s poetry. Through the analysis of Mário Faustino’s work, it is observed how the poet takes advantage of his themes to promote the return to the mythological age, when man and nature were perfectly integrated, to harmonize men and modern era. This exam reaches the conclusion that his work presents the junction of poetry and mythological speech, as the poet’s way of recollecting resources to present a reaction against the materialism imposed by modernity.

    No full text
The content of these reflections mainly concerns education and it is approached from different angles and perspectives. Many of these reflections, developed by the author, come from his experience in the offices that he held in the university environment, especially in the role as rector of the Santo Tomás University at Tunja and Bucaramanga. It should be noted that in the exercise of this type of office, the speeches are continuous, numerous and varied, and their contextual content responds to different circumstances, making all this an important fact in the life of Fray Faustino, which has been an opportunity to develop your thinking as an educator, preacher and spiritual guide. It's very very well know that in all of us there are those founding ideas, that are on the surface and that are drilling our cognitive heritage, and that through the trades we have the opportunity to clarify and condense them in the experience of life, and thus achieve those drops of wisdom in whom we recognize over the years as an exemplary and honest person, as a teacher. In a large part of his reflections, the author refers directly and indirectly to the subject of responsibility –which is explicitly confirmed by what is discussed in the third reflection of the text–, a subject that calls attention to the title: Responsibility of a rector and other managers. This section expresses the service for the truth, which translates into university life with some demands: learn to think rigorously, a healthy critical spirit, investigate, innovate, go further, overcome borders, public service, among others. These themes pass through the analytical crucible of the author, whom we identify as a connoisseur of the ethical issues of man, which he includes both in his thought and in his personal treatment, alive and fraternal to him. In education, learning from good practices and the advice of others is a great treasure for inspiring human thought and action. Fray Faustino brings the reader closer to the thoughts of various authors who will surely help to recreate our own behavior in the art of education and to firmly follow the most sensible warnings, to the point of saying with Pascal: All the good things have already been written. maxims. You just need to put them into practice
