Mario Bertini, scultore pisano.
Muscarinic M2 receptors interact with neurokininergic NK1 and NK2 receptors in the contractions of isolated bronchi in the horse.
Acetylcholine and neurokinins, known as neurotransmitters that induce bronchoconstriction in horses and
other species, are involved in the pathogenesis of obstructive respiratory diseases. However, the
knowledge about the role of muscarinic receptors in the control of airway contraction in equines is not fully
elucidated and that of neurokininergic receptors is limited.
Bronchial smooth muscle rings of slaughtered horses were obtained from healthy lungs, or from lungs with
macroscopic signs of inflammation, put into organ baths and connected to isotonic transducers. Electrical
field stimulation was applied (50 Hz, 1 ms, 300 mA, 50 V every 120 s), and phasic contractions of bronchial
smooth muscle were evoked. Previous experiments showed the neurogenic cholinergic nature of these
contractions and a central role of muscarinic M3 receptors [1]. The effects of drugs were expressed as
variation of the pre-drug contraction amplitude, assumed as 100%.
Bronchial contractions were partially inhibited by selective M3 receptor antagonist (pFHHSiD) up to 10-6 M,
and totally abolished at 10-5 M in normal and inflamed tissues. Methoctramine, selective M2 receptor
antagonist, was able to reduce the contractions only in healthy bronchial rings, whereas selective M1
receptor antagonist, VU0255035, reduced the contractions only in pathologic ones.
L-732,138 and GR159897, selective NK1- and NK2-receptor antagonist respectively, slightly reduced the
contractions in normal and pathologic tissues, whereas SB218795, selective NK3-receptor antagonist, was
ineffective. In presence of either NK1, NK2, but not NK3 receptor block, M2 antagonist, methoctramine,
was able to reduce the contractions of the pathologic bronchi, while the response in normal tissue was
unchanged.
Muscarinic M1, M2, and M3 receptors are involved in the contractions of horse bronchi, M3 receptors
playing a major role. Present results suggest an interference between cholinergic and neurokininergic
systems involving M2, NK1 and NK2 receptor subtypes. The influence of the excitatory peptidergic system
seems to be more evident in pathologic tissue, and indeed up-regulation of NK2 receptors in horses with
RAO was detected [2]. A localization of inhibitory M2 receptors on neurokininergic neurons releasing
substance P and/or neurokinin A could be hypothesized, as already observed in other species [3]. A better
knowledge of the interactions between cholinergic and neurokininergic systems could help the
development of more effective drugs for the treatment of bronchial hyperactivity in horses and, possibly, in
humans.

Francesca Bertini
Francesca Bertini was an extremely careful guardian of her image and legacy throughout her whole life. A major star of the international silent screen, she has recounted her hugely successful career in different autobiographic writings and interventions. An invaluable source of information for the history of Italian cinema, these documents are notoriously reticent—and sometimes unreliable—about certain personal details of her life. For example, she never revealed to have been first registered in 1892 at an orphanage in Florence as Elena Taddei, the daughter of Adelina di Venanzio Fratiglioni, a single mother and possibly a stage actress (Jandelli 2006, 31-2). While many sources indicate her first surname to be Seracini, the only concrete information we have about her acquired identity is that she became Elena Vitiello in 1910, when her mother married Arturo Vitiello, a Neapolitan propman or furniture dealer. Bertini was introduced to the sprightly Neapolitan theatrical milieu at an early age. She got her first, supporting role on stage when she was just seventeen, in the widely acclaimed 1909 production of “Assunta Spina”—an intense southern melodrama by reputed author Salvatore Di Giacomo. One of the most representative texts of the new Neapolitan popular theater, “Assunta Spina” was later transposed on screen by Bertini in 1915. The final result is still regarded as one of the masterpieces of Italian silent cinema and an emblematic example of Verist cinema. By 1915, Bertini had already been cast in more than 50 films, including many one and two-reel historical reconstructions and a few features. The following years saw her continuing to grow in popularity, with her films gaining huge acclaim wherever they were presented, from Europe to Latin America and from Russia to the United States
Natural occurrence of ochratoxin A in confined reared and grazing pigs derived products
Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a well-known nephrotoxic and immunotoxic mycotoxin occurring in several foods and feeds. OTA
residues have been detected as a carryover in pigs and poultry meats. In this study samples of pigs fresh tissues (muscle, backfat)
and processed meat products (seasoned muscle-coppa, seasoned backfat-lard, mortadella and salami) were obtained from
pigs raised following two breeding systems: conventional production systems (indoor) and alternative pig rearing systems (free
outdoor access). Pigs tissues and meat products samples were analysed for OTA content by means of an HPLC-FLD method.
OTA was found in all pigs tissues and meat products at concentration lower than the Italian recommended maximum level of
1 μg/kg, only a sample of mortadella of indoor group showed a concentration very close to this limit. This study suggests that
the contribution from pig fresh tissues to the total intake of the toxin is small if compare
Distributed Ledger and Text Watermarking for Fine-Grain Provenance Checking of Textual Content
Information disorder has become a major societal challenge, impacting public discourse and democracy. This phenomenon has been exacerbated by the spread of social media platforms, affecting various areas, ranging from national elections to public health. Addressing fake news through a manual approach (e.g., human fact-checking) is unfeasible due to the rapid production of textual content. At the same time, applying automatic tools is equally challenging, primarily due to the ambiguity of natural language. In this paper, we addressed online information disorder from a different perspective by proposing a platform that supports trustworthy and reputable news producers and enhances awareness among readers across various social media. Specifically, the proposed platform enables news producers to automatically embed a unique watermark in the text they create, ensuring that the news cannot be manipulated or misattributed. The watermarking is embedded in a fine-grained way, allowing even small extracts of the news to be shared while preserving traceability. Additionally, the association between the watermark and the news item is recorded in a distributed ledger, preventing further manipulation that could arise from centralised management. The aim is to enable readers to make more informed decisions about the content they encounter, even when engaging with excerpts of the original document, minimising reliance on external fact-checking organisations
