Elias of Nisibis, Commentary on the Creed. Critical edition, translation, introduction and comments

    No full text
This book offers a critical edition and an English translation of the Commentary of the Creed (Tafsīr al-amānah al-kabīrah) written by Elias, the then-called Nestorian Metropolitan of Nisibis (975-1046 AD). In his Commentary, Elias quotes sections of the Syriac text of the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed which his Church, the Oriental Church, adopted. For each section, he gives an Arabic translation and a brief interpretation. The editor, Bishara Ebeid presents the life of Elias in its historical context and offers a comparative analysis of the Syriac and the Arabic versions of the Creed in his Commentary. He makes remarks and he argues about the biblical quotations the author made in his interpretations and provides a study of the main doctrines developed by Elias, such as the Trinitarian and Christological doctrines. Elias’s Commentary is to be considered as an exposition of his Church’s faith in a polemic and apologetic way. In fact, he defends his position regarding the doctrines of the two major Oriental Churches, the Melkites and the Jacobites, and also regarding Islam and its accusations against Christians concerning the Trinity and the dogma of the Incarnation, God the Word. This book offers a critical edition and an English translation of the Commentary of the Creed (Tafsīr al-amānah al-kabīrah) written by Elias, the then-called Nestorian Metropolitan of Nisibis (975-1046 AD). The Melkite-Chalcedonian Reading of History: The Case of Eutychius of Alexandria and his Annals

    No full text
The Melkite Christianity of the patriarchates of Alexandria, Jerusalem and Antioch, for centuries, considered its orthodoxy to be the faith of the first six ecumenical councils. Even if the disputation on the icons is mentioned in their treatises and doctrines, especially in apologetic works with Muslims, the seventh council was not considered ecumenical. In my paper I aim to analyze the presentation of these six councils according to one Melkite historical work: the Annals of Eutychius of Alexandria. This work is one of the first historical works we know written in Arabic by a Christian. I will examine how this author presents the councils in their historical context, how he reads and presents the doctrine of each council, and how he describes the heresies and heretics that led to its convocation. I will analyze Eutychius’ historical exposition of Melkite-Chalcedonian dogma and to try to answer these two questions: (1) How does he read the doctrines of the councils? and (2) How does he present the faith through his particular Melkite and Chalcedonian reading

The collection of seven short stories Qamīṣ al-ṣūf (The Woollen Shirt) by the Lebanese writer Tawfīq Yūsuf ʿAwwād (1911-1989), published in 1938, testifies to the modernization of Arabic literature immediately after the period of Nahḍah. This, the second of ʿAwwād’s short story publications, was widely read throughout the Arab world. ʿAwwād was famous for his realistic and social style and his precise descriptions of realities he himself had experienced. He produced work in other literary genres, such as novels, poetry, theatrical work, and articles, but is above all considered a pioneer of the short story form and genre, to which he made a significant contribution. Although his novels and his theatrical work have been translated into Western languages, his four collections of short stories are still untranslated and therefore remain unknown to Western readers. Unlike his novels, the more easily accessible short story form enabled ʿAwwād to focus the reader’s attention on a limited and very specific number of issues and problems. Each collection also reflects the writer’s philosophy of carefully choosing which stories to put together. By comparison with the first of ʿAwwād’s collections, Qamīṣ al-ṣūf reveals a more mature narrative style. Writing about the period after the First World War, in a society full of problems and tragedies as well as strong national feeling, ʿAwwād offers his reader seven stories embodying various contemporary Lebanese contexts: the village, the city and its rural society, women and their problems as mother, wife, and mother-inlaw, but above all, the poverty that leads to suffering and even death. Apart from an Italian translation of one story published in his first collection, this is the first translation of a complete collection by ʿAwwād in a Western language. The book consists of two parts: the first is a presentation of the author, his literary production, his style, and his language, while the second is the collection itself, in the original Arabic text and an annotated Italian translation

Ibn al-Ṭayyib’s Fiqh al-Naṣrāniyya: Translating and Recalling East Syriac Legal Texts in an Arabo- Muslim Context

    No full text
Abū l-Faraǧ ʿAbd Allāh Ibn al-Ṭayyib (10th-11th c.) is one of the most important Christian authors of his time. He was a physician, philosopher and also theologian belonging to the East Syrian Church. He wrote many works on medicine, commentaries on most of the works of Aristotle, Galen and Hippocrates, exegetical works on most of the books of the Holy Scripture and dogmatic treatises. Additionally, he was one among the first East Syrian authors who produced collections of ecclesiastical and civil canons and laws in Arabic. His collection, entitled Fiqh al-Naṣrāniyya, that is, Law of Christianity, is not a simple translation of ancient and traditional East Syriac sources of ecclesiastical law but it should be considered a legal source for the East Syrians under the Islamic Caliphate, even if some parts of it are a reworking and rewriting of previous collections, like the Nomokanon of Gabriel of Basra. My contribution, consequentially, aims, to analyse how two specific topics, namely (1) the re-baptism of the converted, heretics and unbelievers and (2) divorce, are treated in Ibn al-Ṭayyib’s Fiqh al-Naṣrāniyya. The analysis aims to examine the way our author recalls and uses the East Syriac legal tradition, the criteria he follows in selecting material in support of his own position, how he tries to adapt this material to the new socio-political context in which he lives, and finally, whether the Islamic law tradition influences his methodology to any extent

The dataset contains papers written between 2007 and 2016 by researchers and interns at the Center for Arab-West Understanding ( CAWU) in Cairo or by researchers and academics connected to CAWU. The papers aim at obtaining a better understanding of the role of religion in society, including:- Relations between Muslims and Christians in Egypt;- Problems around church building, the highly controversial topic of (alleged) kidnappings of Christian youth, claims of forced conversions, reports on sectarian incidents in Egypt and media critique to uncover biased reporting within Egypt as well as the stereotypical tone in Western media;- The role of Christian and Muslim institutions in society and the political sphere;- Activities of human rights organizations;- Islam and politics. All papers are:- Descriptive and take different points of views serious as part of the description of events unfolding in society;- Contributing to a better understanding of people between different cultures and beliefs.Methodology:Papers always include Egyptian source material. Authors were recommended to make use of the AWR database, conduct interviews in Egypt and where encouraged to contrast results with western news coverage.Papers discuss one subject at length and were reviewed by Egyptian and/or Western academics, within the bounds of organizational possibility and edited by Cornelis Hulsman or others to guarantee academic standards. This has resulted in a number of unique studies about subjects that are rarely covered in depth elsewhere. These papers are completed texts but besides, additional texts from reviewers often include interesting suggestions for further research. With thanks to:Prentice (Author), P. An optimized architecture for real-time fraud detection in big data systems, ecosystems, and environments

    No full text
The exponential growth of data in recent years has created significant challenges in fraud detection. Fraudulent activities are increasingly widespread across sectors, such as banking, web networks, health insurance, and telecommunications. This trend highlights a growing need for big data technologies such as Hadoop, Spark, Storm, and HBase to enable real-time detection and analysis of data fraud. This study aims to enhance understanding of the fraud classifications and their spread in various sectors. Fraud detection involves analyzing data and developing machine learning (ML) models or traditional rule-based systems to identify abnormal activities as they occur. The analysis in this paper examines both the advantages and limitations of these solutions, particularly regarding scalability and performance. This paper evaluates the methods and big data tools used in fraud detection and prevention through a comprehensive literature review, emphasizing the implementation challenges. This review discusses existing solutions, operational environments, and the ML algorithms and traditional rules employed. The main objective of this study is to address these challenges by proposing an innovative architecture that equips organizations with the latest knowledge and methodologies in big data technologies for real-time fraud detection and prevention

Segmentation-free and multiscale-free extraction of medial information using gradient vector flow - Application to vascular structures

    No full text
Gradient Vector Flow has become a popular method to recover medial information in medical imaging, in particular for vessels centerline extraction. This renewed interest has been motivated by its ability to proceed from gray-scale images, without prior segmentation. However, another interesting property lies in the diffusion process used to solve the corresponding variational problem. We propose a method to recover scale information in the context of vascular structures extraction, relying on analytical properties of the Gradient Vector Flow only, with no multiscale analysis. Through simple one-dimensional considerations, we demonstrate the ability of our approach to estimate the radii of the vessels with an error of 10% only in the presence of noise and less than 3% without noise. Our approach is evaluated on convolved bar-like templates and is illustrated on 2D X-ray angiographies. (c) 2012 IEEE. Personal use of this material is permitted.
