About rivers, hyacinths and dark places: the homosexual love theme in «Pequeño vals vienés» by Federico García Lorca

This work analyzes the symbology of the poorly studied poem «Pequeño vals vienés», collected in Lorca’s book Poeta en Nueva York, in order to study the kind of love that is shown in it. These symbols, and their comparison with those present in other works by the author, such as the «Oda a Walt Whitman», the Sonetos del amor oscuro or El público, allows us to verify that in «Pequeño vals vienés» a homosexual love is represented, and this love can only occur in the dark realm of the unconscious, the dream, where the two lovers can meet without fearing the social rejection.peerReviewe

A study of "The Neverending Story" as an allegory of creative writing: The figures of reader and writer in Bastian

I perform a semantic-fictional analysis of The Neverending Story, by Michael Ende (1979). My starting hypothesis is to consider the novel as an allegory of the creative writing process. I study this symbolism in the principal character, Bastian, who incarnate the figures of reader and author in the text, literally and alegoricall

The JCMS Annual Lecture: National Welfare States and European Integration: In Search of a 'Virtuous Nesting'

    No full text
In recent years the EU has been witnessing a growing tension between the logic of 'closure', which underpins national welfare systems, and the logic of 'opening', which guides the integration process, especially in the economic sphere. Are there ways of mitigating such tension, in order to avoid negative consequences in terms of performance and legitimacy? The article outlines a strategy of institutional reconciliation between the two logics, based on a more explicit and effective 'nesting' of the nation-based welfare state within the overall spatial architecture of the Union. While recognizing the important role played by free movement and competition rules, this nesting strategy entails the strengthening of an EU 'social space', capable of safeguarding the closure preconditions for multi-level social sharing arrangements. One Nation Under a Groove? Identity and Multiculturalism in Britain

    No full text
There is a lot of evidence that identity matters for behavior. There is a widespread belief that societies will function better if they manage to establish a common sense of identity among the population. And there are also contemporary fears that this common identity is threatened in several countries. In this paper we investigate the correlates of various measures of identity in the UK, a country currently greatly concerned about a perceived failure to build a common identity from a collection of diverse cultures. We find that the alleged failure to establish a British identity among ethnic minorities is exaggerated - for most their ethnicity and religion seem no barrier to a British identity. But there is a segment of the white population that clearly feels neglected and alienated, and are hostile to the multicultural agenda.Identity, Multiculturalism

The European Welfare State : Golden Achievements, Silver Prospects

    No full text
For the welfare state the last 30 years have witnessed a turbulent transition from the 'Golden Age' of expansion to a 'Silver Age' of permanent austerity. This shift has been the result of external pressures and of internal transformations of domestic economies and social structures. Permanent austerity has entailed incisive institutional adaptations and has been accompanied by a 'new politics', centred on a plurality of 'blame avoidance' strategies on the side of parties and governments. The article summarises and discusses the main factual developments since the mid-1970s but it also surveys the main strands of academic debates on both the expansion and the crisis phases. The author argues that comparative welfare state research has been one of the liveliest fields of political economy - a field marked by important analytical and theoretical advances and by the accumulation of relevant and systematic empirical knowledge about a key institution of the European political landscape
