    Contrapunteos de Lydia Cabrera

    No full text
Even today in the history of Cuban anthropology, little attention is paid to the writer and anthropologist Lydia Cabrera, who has only recently begun to be part of the list of intellectuals in official Cuban culture. However, because of her work and life trajectory, Cabrera can be considered the modern founder of studies on Afro-Cuban religions. The main purpose of this text is to analyse Lydia Cabrera’s ethnographic work based on the idea that there was a ‘counterpoint’, a dialogue, a metaphorical game, between the liminal identity of the author herself – manifested in a racial, cultural, gender, social and political sense – and her interest and dedication to the contribution of slaves and the population of African origin to the history, culture and, ultimately, the identity of their Cuban homeland.

In this work, we report on the synthesis and characterization of six new iridium(III) complexes of the type [Ir(C^N)2(N^N)]+ using 2-phenylpyridine (C1–3) and its fluorinated derivative (C4–6) as cyclometalating ligands (C^N) and R-phenylimidazo(4,5-f)1,10-phenanthroline (R = H, CH3, F) as the ancillary ligand (N^N). These luminescent complexes have been fully characterized through optical and electrochemical studies. In solution, the C4–6 series exhibits quantum yields (Ф) twice as high as the C1–3 series, exceeding 60% in dichloromethane and where 3MLCT/3LLCT and 3LC emissions participate in the phenomenon. These complexes were employed in the active layer of light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs). Device performance of maximum luminance values of up to 21.7 Lx at 14.7 V were observed for the C2 complex and long lifetimes for the C1–3 series. These values are counterintuitive to the quantum yields observed in solution. Thus, we established that the rigidity of the system and the structure of the solid matrix dramatically affect the electronic properties of the complex. This research contributes to understanding the effects of the modifications in the ancillary and cyclometalating ligands, the photophysics of the complexes, and their performance in LEC devices

Xirú e “Abaporu” de Damián Cabrera: configurações do “comum” da comunidade / Xirú and “Abaporu” by Damián Cabrera: Community “Common” Settings

Abstract: The study discusses the “common” (ESPOSITO, 2012; NANCY, 2000) based on the book Xirú and the short story Aboporu by Damián Cabrera, an author whose writing is based on Brazil-Paraguay relations. These works highlight the crisis of an essentialist conception of community, given and/or determined in advance, and the distancing from the “immunitarian modern paradigm” (ESPOSITO, 2012) that imposes itself against any coexistence or contagion that affects the alleged purity of the community. Since language is an inherent element of community thinking, it also starts from a certain “translingual” perspective (MELLO & ANDRADE, 2019) used by the author and which exposes contacts between languages and interferences as a natural, transitory, unforeseen continuum that are articulated in the relations between these cultures and not as previously given substances. No less important, in this sense, is the anthropophagy manifested in the short story “Abaporu”, an anthropophagy that is far from boastful because, like the “translingual” perspective that manifests Xirú, it is not identity but, as pointed out by contemporary readings made by Alexandre Nodari (2011), Florencia Garramuño (2019) and Eduardo Sterzi (2017), an anthropophagy as an experimentation with diversity, and with an emphasis on a relational position. In this way, the “common” in these works is constituted as what is not proper to the community, as substances that are shared, but as a relational bond. Keywords: Damián Cabrera; common; translingual; anthropophagy

Five rhenium complexes [Re(CO)3(N,N)Cl] (C1–5), in which N,N represents iminopyridyl ligands, were successfully synthesized. The structural characterization of these compounds includes NMR, FT-IR, and HRMS analyses. Additionally, the molecular structures of C2 and C3 were determined through X-ray diffraction analysis. Electrochemical characterization indicates a metal-centered HOMO and a ligand-centered LUMO, with the latter strongly influenced by the nature of the substituent. The photophysical properties of all complexes were examined using UV–Vis spectroscopy and spectrofluorometric measurements in dichloromethane solution at room temperature, as well as in the solid state. All complexes exhibit a spin-allowed MLCT absorption transition in the 405–471 nm range. In degassed dichloromethane solution at room temperature, complexes C1–3 and C5 display an unstructured MLCT emission in the red region of the visible spectrum. In contrast, complex C4, which features the lower-energy absorption, is nearly non-luminescent. Conversely, all complexes show emission in the solid state, with bands presenting a distinctive hypsochromic shift characteristic of MLCT states. Finally, all compounds were evaluated for their ability to promote the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2, showing turnover frequencies (TOFs) ranging from 8.1 to 304.4 s-1

Synthesis of New Phosphorescent Imidoyl-Indazol and Phosphine Mixed Ligand Cu(I) Complexes – Structural Characterization and Photophysical Processes

Four mononuclear Cu(I) complexes were prepared, described as [Cu(N,N)2]PF6 (1) and [Cu(N,N)(P,P)]PF6 (2-4), where N,N is N-(1-(2H-indazol-2-yl)ethylidene)-2,6-diisopropylaniline and P,P are phosphine derived ancillary ligands (bis[2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl]ether (POP), bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe) or 2 PPh3). These new species were characterized by NMR, FT-IR, elemental analyses, cyclic voltammetry, UV-Vis – emission spectroscopy, transient absorption spectroscopy and DFT calculations. In addition, complexes 1 and 2 were characterized by X-ray diffraction. The four complexes showed an MLCT absorption band between 400-450 nm, in addition to a weak structured phosphorescence in a 4:1 ethanol:methanol glassy matrix at 77 K. Complexes 2-4 have emission profiles that resemble the phosphorescence of the protonated N,N ligand, suggesting a triplet LC character of the lowest lying excited state at 77 K. By contrast, a mixed MLCT/LC triplet emission is most likely responsible for the phosphorescence in complex 1. Weak ligand-centered emission is also detected in the solid state at room temperature but only in the case of complexes 2 and 4, suggesting thermally activated deactivation processes in the case of 1 and 3. Notably, the transient absorption spectroscopy of complexes 2-4 in CH2Cl2 solution confirms a strong contribution from a ligand-centered (LC) triplet excited state, pointing towards a mixed 3MLCT/3LC character of the transient species in solution at room temperature, undergoing a non-radiative deactivation in the s time-scale. This behavior markedly differs from that observed for complex 1, whose short-lived 3MLCT excited state is followed by ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy

The tragedies of Maria Rosa Galvez de Cabrera (1768-1806).

    No full text
The aim of this thesis is to advance an understanding of the author's corpus of tragic plays, eight in total. Chapter One explores continuities and changes in Galvez's critical fortunes in the last two hundred years. Chapter Two examines the author's commitment to write tragedy in the light of notions of the genre in eighteenth-century Spain, situating Galvez's innovation and experimentation with generic constants both ancient and modern in the context of the contemporary debate on theatre. The remaining eight chapters are dedicated to analyses of aesthetic, structural and thematic elements of each play: Afi-Bek, set in Mameluke Egypt, whose ensemble cast of characters and uncompromising portrayal of cruelty and barbarity perplexed contemporary critics; Safil, which dramatised the final hours in the life of this Biblical figure in the uni-personal melologo format; Safo, which depicted the Greek poet's passionate yet solemn act of suicide; Florinda, which interrogated the legend of the Moorish Conquest of Spain; Blanca de Rossi, in which elements of the emergent Gothic style animated the familiar tragic dilemma between public duty and personal honour; Amnon, which recast the Biblical story of Amnon and Tamar and engaged with earlier treatments by Calderon de la Barca and Tirso de Molina; Zinda which addressed issues of slavery, colonialism and nationhood, drawing on elements and techniques associated with sentimental comedy; La delirante, in which Galvez approached the historical account of the rivalry between Tudor and Stuart, through the character of Leonor, Mary Stuart's daughter. The systematic analysis of these plays reveals Galvez as a self-conscious and skilful tragedian, able to fuse the conventions of ancient models of tragedy with the devices of new dramatic and literary forms to create a body of tragic writing which is at once experimental, innovative and essentially classicising
