A low-cost microstrip antenna for 3G-WLAN-WiMAX and UWB applications

    No full text
This paper presents a low-cost ultra-wideband microstrip antenna for wireless communications. Printed on a 40×50×1.83 mm3 Isola Gigaver 210 substrate, the antenna features a microstrip feed line with two 45° bends and a tapered section for size reduction and matching, respectively. The ground plane is partial and comprises a rectangular part and a trapezoidal part. The patch is a half ellipse, where the cut is made along the minor axis. Several slots are incorporated into the patch. The placement and sizes of the slots are assisted by the knowledge of fractal geometries . The return loss, input impedance, gain, efficiency and radiation characteristics of the antenna are presented. It is shown that the antenna can operate in the bands used for UMTS, WLAN, WiMAX, and UWB applications. © 2009 IEEE.*AG TECHN, ADS MOM 2006; Al-Husseini M., 2008, 2008 INT WIR COMM MO; ALHUSSEINI M, 2009, 26 NAT RAD SCI C NRS; Balanis C. Cognitive radio transceivers: RF, spectrum sensing, and learning algorithms review

    No full text
    A cognitive transceiver is required to opportunistically use vacant spectrum resources licensed to primary users. Thus, it relies on a complete adaptive behavior composed of: reconfigurable radio frequency (RF) parts, enhanced spectrum sensing algorithms, and sophisticated machine learning techniques. In this paper, we present a review of the recent advances in CR transceivers hardware design and algorithms. For the RF part, three types of antennas are presented: UWB antennas, frequency-reconfigurable-tunable antennas, and UWB antennas with reconfigurable band notches. The main challenges faced by the design of the other RF blocks are also discussed. Sophisticated spectrum sensing algorithms that overcome main sensing challenges such as model uncertainty, hardware impairments, and wideband sensing are highlighted. The cognitive engine features are discussed. Moreover, we study unsupervised classification algorithms and a reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm that has been proposed to perform decision-making in CR networks. © 2014 Lise Safatly et al.ABOUFOUL T, 2012, INT J ANTENN PROPAG; Aboufoul T, 2012, IEEE ANTENN WIREL PR, V11, P392, DOI 10.1109-LAWP.2012.2193551; Al-Husseini M., 2010, P IEEE ANT PROP SOC, P1; Al-Husseini M, 2011, IEEE ANTENNAS PROP, P1120; ALHUSSEINI M, 2009, P INT C ADV COMP TOO, P68; Al-Husseini M., 2013, ADV MICROSTRIP ANTEN, P337; Al-Husseini M, 2011, TURK J ELECTR ENG CO, V19, P243, DOI 10.3906-elk-1001-360; Al-Husseini M., 2008, P INT WIR COMM MOB C, P1023; Al-Husseini M., 2009, P 26 NAT RAD SCI C M, P1; Al-Husseini M., 2009, P INT C EL EL ENG EL, pII; Al-Husseini M., 2010, P AS PAC MICR C APMC, P618; Al-Husseini M., 2011, P IEEE APS TOP C ANT, P902; Al-Husseini M., 2011, PROGR ELECTROMAGNE B, V37, P327; Almalkawi M, 2011, IEEE ANTENN WIREL PR, V10, P959, DOI 10.1109-LAWP.2011.2167649; Andrews C, 2010, IEEE J SOLID-ST CIRC, V45, P2696, DOI 10.1109-JSSC.2010.2077151; Arias J, 2009, IEEE T CIRCUITS-I, V56, P1478, DOI 10.1109-TCSI.2008.2006214; Augustin G, 2012, IEEE T ANTENN PROPAG, V60, P5479, DOI 10.1109-TAP.2012.2207688; Azim R., 2013, Progress in Electromagnetics Research, V133; Bkassiny M, 2013, IEEE T WIREL COMMUN, V12, P5413, DOI 10.1109-TWC.2013.092013.120688; Bkassiny M, 2012, IEEE T WIREL COMMUN, V11, P2596, DOI 10.1109-TWC.2012.051512.111504; Bkassiny M., 2011, P 20 ANN WIR OPT COM, P1; Bkassiny M, 2013, IEEE COMMUN SURV TUT, V15, P1136, DOI 10.1109-SURV.2012.100412.00017; Blaakmeer SC, 2007, PROC EUR SOLID-STATE, P364, DOI 10.1109-ESSCIRC.2007.4430319; Boos Z., 2011, P IEEE INT SOL STAT, P376; Borremans J, 2011, IEEE J SOLID-ST CIRC, V46, P1659, DOI 10.1109-JSSC.2011.2144110; Borremans J, 2010, IEEE J SOLID-ST CIRC, V45, P2116, DOI 10.1109-JSSC.2010.2063630; Busoniu L., 2006, P 9 INT C CONTR AUT, P1, DOI DOI 10.1109-ICARCV.2006.345353; Cai Y, 2012, IEEE T ANTENN PROPAG, V60, P2905, DOI 10.1109-TAP.2012.2194654; Chantaraskul S, 2009, 2009 IEEE 20TH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON PERSONAL, INDOOR AND MOBILE RADIO COMMUNICATIONS, P2310, DOI 10.1109-PIMRC.2009.5450129; Clancy TC, 2011, IEEE T WIREL COMMUN, V10, P1289, DOI 10.1109-TWC.2011.030311.101137; Chen HS, 2007, IEEE ICC, P6487, DOI 10.1109-ICC.2007.1073; Chen Z, 2011, IEEE SOUTHEASTCON, P409; Clancy C, 2007, IEEE WIREL COMMUN, V14, P47, DOI 10.1109-MWC.2007.4300983; Davis G, 1997, CONSTR APPROX, V13, P57, DOI 10.1007-BF02678430; Devroye N, 2008, IEEE SIGNAL PROC MAG, V25, P12, DOI 10.1109-MSP.2008.929286; Ebrahimi E, 2011, IEEE T ANTENN PROPAG, V59, P2628, DOI 10.1109-TAP.2011.2152353; ESCOBAR MD, 1995, J AM STAT ASSOC, V90, P577, DOI 10.2307-2291069; ESCOBAR MD, 1994, J AM STAT ASSOC, V89, P268, DOI 10.2307-2291223; Falcone F, 2004, PHYS REV LETT, V93, DOI 10.1103-PhysRevLett.93.197401; Fettweis G., 2005, P 16 INT S PERS IND, V4, P2347; Galindo-Serrano A, 2010, IEEE T VEH TECHNOL, V59, P1823, DOI 10.1109-TVT.2010.2043124; GARDNER WA, 1987, IEEE T COMMUN, V35, P584, DOI 10.1109-TCOM.1987.1096820; GARDNER WA, 1987, IEEE T COMMUN, V35, P595, DOI 10.1109-TCOM.1987.1096816; Gardner WA, 1991, IEEE SIGNAL PROC MAG, V8, P8; Gardner WA, 2006, SIGNAL PROCESS, V86, P639, DOI 10.1016-j.sigpro.2005.06.016; Gavrilovska L, 2013, IEEE COMMUN SURV TUT, V15, P1761, DOI 10.1109-SURV.2013.030713.00113; Ghaderi MR, 2011, IEEE ANTENN WIREL PR, V10, P682, DOI 10.1109-LAWP.2011.2158629; Ghaffari A, 2011, IEEE J SOLID-ST CIRC, V46, P998, DOI 10.1109-JSSC.2011.2117010; Giupponi L, 2010, IEEE WIREL COMMUN, V17, P47, DOI 10.1109-MWC.2010.5547921; Goldsmith A, 2009, P IEEE, V97, P894, DOI 10.1109-JPROC.2009.2015717; Gong B, 2013, PROG ELECTROMAGN RES, V139, P265, DOI 10.2528-PIER13031701; Grimm M, 2012, FREQUENZ, V66, P303, DOI 10.1515-freq-2012-0052; Gruget A., 2010, P IEEE INT MICR WORK, P73; Gruget A., 2011, P 20 EUR CIRC THEOR, P785; Hamid MR, 2011, IEEE T ANTENN PROPAG, V59, P1472, DOI 10.1109-TAP.2011.2122293; Hamid MR, 2011, IEEE T ANTENN PROPAG, V59, P4008, DOI 10.1109-TAP.2011.2164197; Haykin S, 2005, IEEE J SEL AREA COMM, V23, P201, DOI 10.1109-JSAC.2004.839380; Huang CC, 2011, IEEE J SOLID-ST CIRC, V46, P848, DOI 10.1109-JSSC.2011.2109511; Jayaweera S. Advanced techniques and antenna design for pulse shaping in UWB cognitive radio

    No full text
Spectrum scarcity has emerged as a primary problem in the communications technology. The combination of cognitive radio (CR) and ultra-wideband impulse radio (UWB-IR) has been proposed to solve the shortage problem by allowing smart and adaptive spectrum management, leading to UWB-CR. In a UWB-CR scheme, secondary users are supposed to ensure interference avoidance by adaptively selecting the portions of the spectrum not being used by primary users. In this paper, three different techniques for the generation of adaptive UWB pulses are studied. The Parks-McClellan algorithm is employed, a neural network is trained, and a reconfigurable band stop filter is designed to generate an adaptive waveform with nulls at specific frequencies. Simulations, measurements, and analysis show that each generated UWB pulse has remarkable advantages in the frequency utilization, spectrum avoidance, and hardware implementation. Motion planning in polyhedral products of groups and a Fadell-Husseini approach to topological complexity

    No full text
We compute the topological complexity of a polyhedral product Z\mathcal{Z} defined {in terms of} an LS\operatorname{LS}-logarithmic family of locally compact connected CW\operatorname{CW} topological groups. The answer is given by a combinatorial formula that involves the LS\operatorname{LS} category of the polyhedral-product factors. As a by-product, we show that the Iwase-Sakai conjecture holds true for Z\mathcal{Z}. The proof methodology {uses} a Fadell-Husseini viewpoint for the monoidal topological complexity (TCM)\big(\mathsf{TC}^M\big) of a space, which, under mild conditions, recovers Iwase-Sakai's original definition. In the Fadell-Husseini context, the stasis condition - TCM\mathsf{TC}^M's \emph{raison d'\^etre} - can be encoded at the covering level. Our Fadell-Husseini inspired definition provides an alternative to the TCM\mathsf{TC}^M variant given by Dranishnikov, as well as to the ones provided by Garc\'ia-Calcines, Carrasquel-Vera and Vandembroucq in terms of relative category

Early Toarcian glacio-eustatic unconformities and chemostratigraphic black holes

During Late Pliensbachian and Early Toarcian times (Early Jurassic Epoch, c. 185 to 180 Ma) major environmental instabilities and perturbations affected the evolution of the carbon cycle, climate, sea level and biota. The temporal and causal relationships between these global-scale phenomena however remain poorly understood. This study starts by refining the accuracy of the ages of Lower Toarcian ammonite zones and subzones, and carbon-isotope excursions defined in the carbon-13 isotope (δ13C) reference curve of Ruebsam and Al-Husseini (2020). Based on an extensive review of stratigraphic data our study identified and calibrated by numerical age ammonite-dated transgressive-regressive (T-R) sequences, sequence boundaries (SB), maximum flooding intervals (MFI) and climate cycles. These calibrations placed in a common temporal framework the δ13C reference curve, T-R sequences, climate cycles and the Karoo-Ferrar Large Igneous Province (K-F LIP).The temporal framework revealed four intervals that are either fragmented, or completely missing in numerous Upper Pliensbachian and Lower Toarican δ13C records (Stratigraphic Black Holes: SBH; Ruebsam and Al-Husseini, 2020). The identified SBHs closely correlated to erosional unconformities or sequence boundaries and global cooling. Unconformities occur in the spinatum zone (SBH 1), in the middle tenuicostatum zone (SBH 2) and in the middle serpentinum zone (SBHs 3 and 4). The older three SBHs further contain global sequence boundaries SBs JPl8, JTo1 and JTo2 of Haq (2018). The sea falls associated with the unconformities have amplitudes of many tens to possibly 75 m and exceed by more than an order of magnitude falls associated with thermo-eustasy or aquifer-eustasy (Davies et al., 2020). Sea level falls are therefore attributed to build-ups of polar ice caps and their ages and those of subsequent highstands were found to be consistent with the predictions of the Orbital Scale of glacio-eustasy (Matthews and Al-Husseini, 2010). We conclude tuning of insolation caused by eccentricity cycles with periods of c. 0.1, 0.405 and c. 2.4 myr drove sea-level fluctuations and also paced changes in the global carbon cycle and climate. Greenhouse gas emissions associated with volcanism in the Karoo-Ferrar Large Igneous Province affected the global carbon cycle and thereby amplified climate and sea level changes

Early Christian-Muslim Debate on the Unity of God examines the writings of three of the earliest known Christian theologians to write comprehensive theological works in Arabic. Theodore Abū Qurra, Abū Rā?iṭa and ?Ammār al-Baṣrī provide valuable insight into early Christian-Muslim debate shortly after the rise of the Islamic empire. Through close examination of their writings on the doctrine of the Trinity, Sara Husseini demonstrates the creativity of these theologians, who make use of language, style and argumentation characteristic of Islamic theological thought (kalām), in order to help articulate their long-established religious truths. Husseini offers close analysis of the authors individually and comparatively, exploring their engagement with Islamic theology and their role in this fascinating period

This paper examines the thoughts of KH. Muhadjirin Amsar Al-Dary in Mishb?h al-Dhal?m: Syarh Bul?gh al-Mar?m min Adillah al-Ahk?m. The book is one of the results of a phenomenal writing, when he studied in Makkah and Medina. This study uses the approach of Philology and Phenomenology, which are used as the analytical tool to obtain information from a text through the work of KH. Muhadjirin Amsar Ad-Dary (1924-2003) and to reveal facts in a certain time span based on the views of a group of people or someone who is considered representative. This study shows that the main characteristics and identity of KH. Muhadjirin’s work viewed from the systematic of Mishb?h al-Dhal?m: Syarh Bul?gh al-Mar?m min Adillah al-Ahk?m, very clearly visible. In the book, he presents several studies which describe the differences among several schools, especially the popular school of jurisprudence.  Keywords: syarh, kitab, KH. Muhadjirin
