A fim de confrontar as referências estudadas, propusemo-nos a encenar o espetáculo Inomináveis # coletivo Beckett, uma reunião das peças Play, Not I, Rough for theatre I e Footfalls. Consideramos e aferimos nossas hipóteses através de depoimentos cedidos pelos atores envolvidos em nossa encenação This work aims to study the most important tools of Samuel Beckett#s art, the testimony of historical actors who worked under his direction to propose possible ways of formation a particular actor that would condensate a body in a state of penury using experiences from dramaturgical preparation. We observed some characteristics of Beckett#s work as an influence of the Minimalism in his last plays, the musicality in his theatrical texts and the immobility of his characters. We studied the characters in depth to clear relations with the post-dramatic actors by mean of recognizing the most important features of actors involved with Samuel Beckett. In order to confront our references, we put forward a staging: Inomináveis # coletivo Beckett, a sequence of Play, Not I, Rough for theatre I and Footfalls. We investigated and assessed our hypotheses using testimonies of the actors involved in our staging

Global challenges of corporate social responsibility and sustainable development: an introduction.

    No full text
Over recent years, the concepts, and associated practices, of corporate social responsibility and sustainable development have been subject to considerable challenges. These challenges range from basic questions concerning their purpose and organizational intent through to relevance to contemporary issues and suitability for both local and global applications. We can perhaps condense these challenges, into the questions—are corporate social responsibility and sustainable development meeting expectations, if not why not and what needs to change in order for their conceptual promises to be realized? These are questions that were formulated during the editing and as such were not set for the book contributors. Nevertheless, each author has in their own way explored these questions and in the process have provided us with some fascinating insights both into challenges and potential solutions

An evaluation of the sensitivity of nuclear magnetic resonance measurements to hydraulic parameters of the vadose zone

Hydrogeologic processes of the vadose zone have important implications for many environmental issues including agricultural practices such as irrigation, water resource management, and contaminant transport, among others. Current methods for characterizing the vadose zone involve invasive and sparse data collection techniques. While geophysics has the potential to measure hydrogeologic processes non-invasively, current geophysical measurements have not been widely used to study the vadose zone. Of interest in this study is developing nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) as a means to investigate the vadose zone. The first laboratory study in this thesis investigated the NMR relaxation time versus saturation curve of unconsolidated geologic media for samples exhibiting NMR relaxation in different diffusion regimes. Six synthetic sands were created that varied in both grain size and total iron content, in order to simulate different pore size distributions and surface relaxivities. The relative relaxation time versus saturation curve was found to be linear for fast diffusion regime samples and a power law relationship for samples outside the fast diffusion regime. This study proves that samples in different diffusion regimes have different relaxation time versus saturation relationships. The second laboratory study investigated the response in the NMR measurement due to hysteresis caused by drainage and imbibition. The water retention curves, WRC, of four synthetic sands and two loamy sand soils were measured with a porous plate experiment during both drainage and imbibition. Hysteresis was observed for the WRC’s of all samples, but not observed for NMR parameters versus water content. This study proves that NMR is insensitive to differences in the WRC as expressed during drainage and imbibition. Surface NMR is an NMR field measurement, which is capable of measuring a vertical profile of water in the subsurface, and offers a new way of studying the vadose zone. The third study investigated the ability of signal cancellation algorithms to remove the signal originating from a surface water layer present during a surface NMR measurement. An infiltration experiment resulted in a scenario in which the measurement loop was submerged in a layer of surface water. The algorithms presented in this study were capable of removing the signal originating from the surface water layer, resulting in a usable dataset for monitoring infiltration.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Samuel O. Richardson, Barbauld, and the construction of an early modern fan club

MPhilMuch has been written about the life and long works of the eighteenth century epistolary novelist, Samuel Richardson, but the prospect of his position as the first celebrity novelist – responsible for courting his own fame as well as initiating his own fan club – has largely been ignored. The body of manuscripts housed at the National Art Library in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London provides the modern scholar with evidence of the skeletal beginnings of an early fan club. This thesis aims to show how these manuscripts were turned into a saleable commodity by the publisher and entrepreneur Richard Phillips, while under the guiding hand of another, slightly later, literary celebrity, Anna Laetitia Barbauld. In order to restore Richardson’s reputation amongst a new nineteenth century audience, Barbauld was required to construct her own idea of him as an eighteenth century celebrity author, and in doing so the insecurities of a self-professed, apparently diffident man, are revealed. Barbauld’s capacious, but heavily edited selection of letters is analyzed in this thesis, providing ample evidence that Richardson’s correspondents were more than just eager letter writers. By using Barbauld’s biography of Richardson this thesis aims to show how she manipulates the genre of life writing in her construction of him. This thesis offers an alternative reading of how the Richardson manuscripts are viewed, redefining them as not simply a collection of letters, but as a collective entity, deliberately selected and archived as evidence of an early modern fan club, and its celebrity managing director

Within this work I present my translation for three poems by the Irish writer Samuel Beckett, still unpublished in Brazilian Portuguese, (“Dieppe”, “Saint-Lô” and “Antipepsis”), which will be analyzed as “war poems”, since the author wrote them while resisting to the progress of Nazism in France. The relevance of this work is given as a contribution to studies on Beckett’s poetry (an author more notably remembered as a playwright and novelist than as a poet). These three poems were chosen as a proposal to commemorate an “antifascist Beckett”. The readers will find my translations alongside the original poems, followed by comments that explain the translational decisions, in addition to providing interpretations for the original poems

A cost-benefit analysis of ISO26000 : the standard on social responsibility

    No full text
The International Organization for Standardization’s ISO 26000 on social responsibility supports organizations of all types and sizes in their responsibilities toward society and the environment. The standard's core subjects respect the rule of law as well as international norms on human rights and non-discrimination. ISO 26000 recommends that organizations ought to follow its principles on accountability, transparency, ethical behaviors and fair operating practices that safeguard organizations and their stakeholders' interests. Hence, this chapter presents a critical analysis on ISO 26000. This is followed by a discussion on the trade-offs between the costs and benefits for those organizations who intend following this social responsibility standard’s principles. Afterwards, this contribution posits that the stated purpose of ISO’s non-certified standard on social responsibility is to provide ‘guidance’ to its users as it is not an enforceable instrument. In conclusion, the author has put forward his implications for practitioners and policy makers. This chapter also suggested some future research avenues to academia.peer-reviewe

Evandro Affonso Ferreira: vidas desengraçadas e o arquivo debilitado

This dissertation investigates writing procedures by Evandro Affonso Ferreira, a contemporary Brazilian author with five books published so far. These procedures are studied according to the movement of the characters. The work is divided in two parts: the first one is a game for a galery (possible and failed) of stupids and its "infamous lives" regarding the precarious experience and existence of these characters. The game happens in an involvement with the visual arts (Marcelo Coutinho, Elida Tessler and León Ferrari) and with some other fictional texts from authors like Gusmán, Kafka, Melville, Walser etc. The second one is how the author works with his texts, books and the lexicon he uses - the sonorous words -, as all this would form a single (an unique) book, free in a Babel library of the language, of the imagination, of the memory, of the literature. The book as an object that compounds the trajectory of an author-reader, his Babelic collection. For this I use the theories of Agamben, Benjamin, Blanchot, Derrida, Deleuze, Foucault and others

    Samuel Rawet: prophet of alterity.

This research has had as its central purpose to contribute for the rescue of Samuel Rawets work, mainly through the analysis of his first book, Contos do Imigrante (Immigrant stories), published in 1956. It was sought to establish the locus of his literary production, under two concomitant and converging optics: that of the Jewish literature produced in Brazil, and that of the Brazilian literature of the genre privileged by Rawet, the short story. Searching to attain these goals, the research has been divided into five parts: Chapter one, Samuel Rawets Critical Fortune, surveys the reception of Rawets works by the specialized critique alongside his career; newspapers, literature magazines, and books on literature critique were searched. It has been observed that, in general terms, specialists have always given Rawets fictional works a favorable welcome, notwithstanding some few dissonant opinions. However, what astonishes us, for its scarcity, is the number of texts dealing with Rawets work, the growing indifference of the critics. Chapter two, An Autobiography, tries to draw a panorama of Rawets life, with absolute emphasis on the aspects related to his literary production. For this purpose, passages extracted from interviews given by Rawet in different points of his career have been compiled. These testimonies were contextualized by the present author by means of analyses of Jewish life conditions in Eastern Europe and of the particularities of the great exodus from Russia and Poland, mainly to the United States but also to Brazil and other American countries. Chapter three, Narrativity, Language, Exclusion, analyses the first five stories in the anthology Contos do Imigrante, that is, those in which Rawet focuses on Jewish protagonists, the relationships with their respective families and with the Jewish community, groups that are traditionally held as pillars of the Jewish life. Chapter four, Social Responsibility, tries to observe, through the reading of the five "non-Judaic" stories of the anthology Contos do Imigrante, the appearance of a social conscience in the young Samuel Rawet as he feels more and more like a Brazilian thinker. At last, chapter five, General Bibliography, presents a list of Samuel Rawets books and all that has been written about him, of whose existence the present author has had acquaintance, besides other works of general character that the author has made use of. Despite being aware that this relation is not complete, I believe that it may serve as a starting point for other researchers, and I hope to have advanced a step, if modest, towards the systematization of a bibliography by and on Samuel Rawet, whose importance is correlate to the importance of Samuel Rawet himself for Brazilian literature and for the Jewish-Brazilian cultural production
