    In the summer of 1993, two Russian scientists from the Institute of Physics in Nizhny Novgorod drove the 1, 934 km to Umeå, where I was based at that time, in their red Lada car loaded with a home-built Ti:Sa laser. Within a few days, the laser was put in operation, pumped by a small argon-ion laser, and produced stable -100 fs pulses at 790 nm. These pulses were applied to our favorite topic at that time, energy transfer within light-harvesting complexes of photosynthetic purple bacteria. Energy transfer times between the pigment molecules of two different LH2 complexes were measured and the work was published in Chem. Phys. Lett. (CPM). In March 1994, Ahmed was touring Sweden, and having seen our recently published LH2 work in CPL, he took the detour to northern Umeå. On March 24, I picked up Ahmed outside the “Stora Hotellet” in Umeå, dressed in a thin summer jacket and shoes suitable for California climate, but not for a cold, snowy, and gloomy day in March in northern Sweden. This was how I met Ahmed forthe first time. We quickly moved to the chemistry department, where we had a full day of scientific discussions. We had continued the work on energy transfer in photosynthetic light-harvesting complexes and had a bunch of exciting new results that we thought indicated vibrational coherence and interexciton state relaxation processes. Ahmed showed his enthusiasm and support to the results, which we submitted to CPM a month later. Through this work, and much work that followed as well as work by other groups, a deep understanding of the primary processes of photosynthesis was reached (see, e.g, Ref. 4). Nevertheless, using new sophisticated ultrafast methods such as 2D electronic spectroscopy, increasingly more mechanistic detail is revealed still today (see, e.g., Ref. 5). At the dinner we had later in the evening, Ahmed encountered a northern specialty, which I think became somewhat of a favorite dessert - warm cloudberries with vanilla ice cream…

    Angiotensin II induces soluble fms-Like tyrosine kinase-1 release via calcineurin signaling pathway in pregnancy

    Maternal endothelial dysfunction in preeclampsia is associated with increased soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1), a circulating antagonist of vascular endothelial growth factor and placental growth factor. Angiotensin II (Ang II) is a potent vasoconstrictor that increases concomitant with sFlt-1 during pregnancy. Therefore, we speculated that Ang II may promote the expression of sFlt-1 in pregnancy. Here we report that infusion of Ang II significantly increases circulating levels of sFlt-1 in pregnant mice, thereby demonstrating that Ang II is a regulator of sFlt-1 secretion in vivo. Furthermore, Ang II stimulated sFlt-1 production in a dose- and time-dependent manner from human villous explants and cultured trophoblasts but not from endothelial cells, suggesting that trophoblasts are the primary source of sFlt-1 during pregnancy. As expected, Ang II-induced sFlt-1 secretion resulted in the inhibition of endothelial cell migration and in vitro tube formation. In vitro and in vivo studies with losartan, small interfering RNA specific for calcineurin and FK506 demonstrated that Ang II-mediated sFlt-1 release was via Ang II type 1 receptor activation and calcineurin signaling, respectively. These findings reveal a previously unrecognized regulatory role for Ang II on sFlt-1 expression in murine and human pregnancy and suggest that elevated sFlt-1 levels in preeclampsia may be caused by a dysregulation of the local renin/angiotensin system

    High resolution schemes for bluff-body aerodynamics

    This MSc by Research study has been conducted with the application of a variety of grid configurations for extensive grid analysis along with various numerical schemes on the Ahmed body benchmark test case, in both 2D and 3D analysis. A number of different numerical schemes were used in conjunction with the Reynolds Averaged Navier – Stokes (RANS) equations for steady state simulations, by implementing the Spalart – Allmaras turbulence model as a closure to the equations. The efficiency of the aforementioned grid – numerical schemes compilation in terms of achieving physically meaningful results is assessed in both commercial, widely – used solvers (FLUENT) and the Cranfield University in – house developed UCNS3D code, ultimately aiming to capture and exhibit the differences in the implementation of similar configurations in different solvers for high resolution methods. The simulation results are analysed further and an extensive conclusion analysis takes place for all the cases examined, with the combination of numerical methods and grid configurations used. It should be pointed here that the purpose of this study is to capture and study the main aspects of the flow in 2D and 3D dimension simulations, as well as the assessment of a compilation of numerical schemes never applied and studied before in the Ahmed body case, in an effort for further insight and physically meaningful results in the case. The aim of this study is not to provide results for effective implementation of the turbulence modelling in the Ahmed body test case

    Simultaneous Twin Kernel Learning Using Polynomial Transformations for Structured Prediction

    Many learning problems in computer vision can be posed as structured prediction problems, where the input and output instances are structured objects such as trees, graphs or strings rather than, single labels {+1, −1} or scalars. Kernel methods such as Structured Support Vector Machines , Twin Gaussian Processes (TGP), Structured Gaussian Processes, and vector-valued Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces (RKHS), offer powerful ways to perform learning and inference over these domains. Positive definite kernel functions allow us to quantitatively capture similarity between a pair of instances over these arbitrary domains. A poor choice of the kernel function, which decides the RKHS feature space, often results in poor performance. Automatic kernel selection methods have been developed, but have focused only on kernels on the input domain (i.e.’one-way’). In this work, we propose a novel and efficient algorithm for learning kernel functions simultaneously, on both input and output domains. We introduce the idea of learning polynomial kernel transformations, and call this method Simultaneous Twin Kernel Learning (STKL). STKL can learn arbitrary, but continuous kernel functions, including ’one-way’ kernel learning as a special case. We formulate this problem for learning covariances kernels of Twin Gaussian Processes. Our experimental evaluation using learned kernels on synthetic and several real-world datasets demonstrate consistent improvement in performance of TGP’s.Peer reviewe
